  • I love historic buildings! The Winchester cathedral is a lovely example of preserving a nations' history through the landmark buildings. The hallway is glowing with new life. Those sconces are marvelous. Once the chandelier is installed, the hall will delight. What a welcome for guests upon their arrival! Love the walled garden. The warmth radiating from the rock walls, as well as the shelter, create such a beautiful space for growing food. You'll have to plant more strawberries though to appease the appetite that you and Adrian have for them! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

  • When this chateau is finished, it is going to be the most beautiful renovated/ restored chateau in France. Every project done by Adrian and Carole it is done with love and the right way no matter how much time it takes them to do it or how hard it is to do it. They make a great team and they know how to do the job or they research how it should be done. They really do their work with pride. It is my favorite chateau renovation to watch. I love to see what Carole will find when she " invite us" to shop with her posting the videos. ❤

  • With the bamboo, I used a reciprocating saw with a 3 tooth/inch blade to cut the roots in small chunked sections. I then lifted them using a garden fork to leverage them up. They are a bear to deal with and I found just setting a goal of a 2'x3' section each day helped. It also meant I didn't burn out with it. Unfortunately, if you wait till you get a digger they will only continue to spread and make the job even bigger. On a happier note, the hallway is looking so nice. Love the sconces.

  • Loved the cathedral!!! The archature of the vaults was impressive especially the jointing designs! Also fascinating how the arches on the outside wall remind you of Notre Dame de Paris. They are wise to have set up CCTV in case of the same happening to their church building. Found the display of the "organ 30 year restoration project" interesting. As an organist, having 5,500 pipes in a pipe organ indicates it's a medium sized one...Most pipe organs average between 3,000 (for a 2 manual - keyboard) and 10,000 (for a 4 manual) pipes. Perhaps to put it into context, a minuscule portable pipe organ has 1 to 2 dozen pipes and only 1 manual. The sound is often 'tinny' and sounds sort of 'artificial'. It measures about 6-8 feet high by 3 feet wide. These types are used for practice or for specific high sounds. Some of the largest organs have 7 manuals and over 33,000 pipes! The more pipes there are, the better the choice of sounds. 30 years of renovation means the project is costly and rightly so. You want the best in the business to do the best job. When you next visit a church with a pipe organ, don't just take for granted that the pipes above the organ console (cabinet that houses the manuals, pedals and sound stops boards). Behind those decorative pipes are 3 to 7 levels of upright pipes, all of different heights and diameter, that make the sounds of the organ. The shorter and thinner the pipe, the higher the sound. The longer and wider the diameter the graver the sound. Each "family" of pipes are grouped together. For example the flutes are together: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 foot pipes give you a mellow sound at 8 feet while the 32 foot pipe resonates like a vibrating massage chair in you. The other families of pipes and sounds are: principals, reeds, mixtures and strings. I've had the privilege of playing on a small, 11th century organ in southwest UK. The organ cabinet was set at the entrance of the altar section of the sanctuary while the pipes were located at the far end of the church and a 19th century one with 3 manuals in Quebec, Canada. Both were exhilarating experiences. There is a certain "breathy" sound that never truly leaves an organist's mind - once you've played a pipe organ, digital is somewhat comparable but doesn't do quite justice to "the real thing". The best thing about digital is that the pipes never need tuning.....the down side is that a lightning strike or power outage can mess with its memory and turn your next organ concert upside down! The best thing about pipe is that rich, breathy voice that resonates through your fingers and feet. And the fact that as long as the pump pushes air through the pipes and your fingers release the valves to put air through their valves then you need not worry about lightning strikes.😊

Carole the hallway seems to get more and more spacious with each painted element, it's hard work, but the effect is already surprising, and when you're done it will be great👌. It's good that you have so many rooms, there is plenty of room for workshops. A great trip, and the cathedral is beautiful, the mastery of old craftsmen, it's a pity that today, no one today has such a sense of beauty from today's builders, fortunately, such wonders of old architecture have remained.💚💚💚

  • Oh my dear!! My first time in an English Cathedral? Is it the company in Bath that restore that organ? I met a music teacher in China who's Father owns that organ builder and restorer company. What a rich history! Generations already in the business. Glorious building. So thankful I could see it. Thank you and Best wishes.

  • It is amazing how they builted those cathedrals and churches without the technology we have today. I wanted to be an architect. It is such a creative field. Thank for sharing this video and let us see part of England's history.

I love old architecture, I'm soo amazed by the vision and ability folks had way back then and it was done by hand, it's absolutely astonishing! Thank you for sharing, I'm going to go back for more site seeing!

  • Loved the video, as always. I had been wondering what fabric you would use for the curtains in the hall, forgetting that you had already purchased the fabric that matched the wallpaper you had removed! Can't wait to see the curtains hanging in the hall, and I love the sconces that are already hung.

  • For me, those sconces compliment the shape of the bannister on the stairs very well. Looking at the sconces my eyes immediately are drawn to the bannister in the background and back. Nice choice. Now you are going to ruin it by putting shades on them. 😆😆😆😆😆

  • The hallway is looking so good Carole.....well done, it is so bright and light now....love it!! Adrian, you have done a great job on all of the hallway flooring and insulation.....it will be so much cosier this winter! The bamboo is nasty and am so glad to hear that you have found a way to kill it off. It's almost as bad as the ivy!! The chateau looks beautiful....you have done so much and have breathed new life into it. Well done!!
