Cowboy Junkies are such an under-rated and/or overlooked band. They've been doing great stuff for a long while now.
Anyone who knows anything about music will appreciate this song for what it is, one of the greatest rock tunes of all time. This cover is absolutely incredible.
NoWhere MAn, I'm so stoned I thought is was the original , beatitfil exppression, Sweet jane Now transposing,
Ok
It's always been one of my favorites
THE DRUMMERS RIM SHOTS ARE THE BEST I EVER HEARD....
This was written & recorded by Lou Reed. Lou said he liked the Cowboy Junkies versions better than his own. This, to me is the CJ’s best version!! ❤❤
This version never gets old. I read an interview in which Lou reed said that Cowboy Junkies were his favorite version.
Truth
I used to feel the same -- then I heard Miley Cyrus do it in a Backyard Session. I still love this one instrumentally, but I much prefer Miley's vocals.
After he heard the 3 Nice Girls version he said he regretted he hadn't heard that one before he said CJ's version was the bast. The Girls mix it with "Love and Affection"...
He went further than that. He said: "They made it their own. It's theirs now."
And their Powderfinger is better than Neil Youngs to me too.
"Sultry" is the best adjective to the vocals and the vocalist. The musical accompaniment is tense and precise. Great job, Junkies
You couldn’t get a more beautiful singer with a better voice to perform this number!!
Sade.
Except Lou Reed
Lizzo!
I miss really good music like this... The things you find when your scrolling through YT...
It just keeps getting better and better each time I listen to it. A present for my ears
For anyone who's ever had a heart . . . every single moment in this is perfect.
@allanfifield8256 - Thank you Allan! 💕
This song is extremely simple to play. Even a 1980ties punk band would think it too simple.
only a legend walks on stage with a cuppa BRAVO!!!
@BaldyDude - I love your comment. I also love the way Margo walks on stage with a cuppa BRAVO!!! She does it so well. Yep, only a legend can do that. Thank you for your comment, and your acknowledgment that Margo Timmins is true legend!💕
Happy Heavenly birthday Lou Reed and thank you for a splendid song. Margo steps right up and delivers.
Margo is a gem. Together with Cowboy Junkies she creates magic.❣
@@arneemilbredland2339 - You summed it up perfectly! Thank you.💕
To hear a song you've known forever for the first time is a wonderful thing.
I would venture that “Sweet Jane” has been covered by over a hundred bands. Lou Reed is on record saying this was his favourite. I absolutely concur with him.
I concur a little bit.
I recently heard Miley Cyrus cover Sweet Jane and I was impressed with her version. She's venturing into some great classic rock songs.
Miley cyrus. Check her version out.
❤
@@ricknowak4582 Miley’s cover is an exact copy of Margot’s version. Exact same arrangement. Exact same timing and key signatures. While the Cowboy Junkies’ version was somewhat an ‘original’ cover , Miley’s was an exact copy of the Junkies’
I saw this band in May of 1989 at the Rialto Theater in Raleigh, NC. It was so laid back and awesome. We got out of our seats and moved down to the front and sat on the floor and watched them. This cover of this song is my favorite of all time.
@alvarezjen - What a wonderful experience! Thank you for sharing💕
Cool story!!
Margo the enchantress and her sulphurous band. Hats off ladies and gentlemen !!
If you've ever had the misfortune to realize that you were only playing a part in somebody else's story, this song hits hard.
We are each the ultimate star in our own movie while at the same time being just a numberless spear carrier in the film about humanity.
Okay, so, after listening to this a couple of times using a good set of headphones, I discovered "flavors," if you will, from each of them. Little things that one might not notice right off the bat but nevertheless are there. Subtle taps by the drummer. Equally subtle enhancements by the guitar; the kinds of little things that really add to the song. Kind of like putting just enough spice in a dish to make it pop without being overwhelming and distracting. Great track by a great band. I really enjoyed this. Thank you.
@American Warhorse - Thank you so much for taking the time to listen thoroughly, and sharing your wonderful feedback!💕
@@blythespirit4077 It was my pleasure, believe me.
Same could be said for the camera work.
@@madpogue Yes indeed.
So I read your comment and got curious. I've loved this cover forever but never noticed your "flavors". It didn't take me long and faith and begorrah you're right. Cool observation and thanks. Of course I've got a grand gummy buzz going down and even my dog is fascinating. Seriously I do respect this one a whole lot more.
Its magical how the instruments all come in. And her voice is a calming sultry presence
Oh Yeaah.
Nice desciption ...SULTRY PRESENCE !
I love this band my bf Andrea and i saw them at a small venue outside of Philly in the 90s. I sat and talked to Margo for maybe a minute before the show. She remembered my name when the show was over. Andrea and I laughed and joked and swapped stories with them them for an hour after the show. Great musicians, even greater cool people. Stay high my friends.
Mann Music center? That’s where I caught awesome music in the 90’s. Great music, views, friends, woods to pee in😂, great memories.
Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. Brings back memories my late wife and I shared. Thank You
Wish you could give it a thumbs up everytime you watch it
Lou Reed called this band’s original cover of this song “the definitive version”. Couldn’t get a better accolade than that one.
One of the best songs of all time, whether arranged as hard rock, alternative, folk, pop or bluegrass.
Having Eclectic music taste like I do its like WOW.
Similar to the Grateful Dead and the Allman brothers live jams. This song could go on for an hour and more, letting each instrument and her voice take control for periods as it progresses. That guitar playing is incredible!
❤️
not to mention the overdriven effected mando :)
Very well said 😅
I can't get enough of these old classics that I search for when I'm in the mood and love so very much with my heart and soul and every fiber of my being.
i love this band & love Margo’s haunting voice!!
Thanks I could not remember this girls name. She sang this with a band in the 90’s.
@Paiadakine - You’re welcome. Her name is Margo Timmins.💕
NEVER FORGET MOTT THE HOOPLE! GREAT BAND
Hahaha
I first saw Mott in the early 70’s supported by an unknown band called Queen. I wonder how they turned out 😀
A voice of milk and honey. Accompaniment glorious.
Silky and sultry at the same time. Amazing vocals!
Fantastic! All aspects of it. Mandolin, guitar, and a freakin’ accordion with Margo’s great vocals. Doesn’t get any better. Turn it UP!
My heart still flutters for Margo Timmins! And course her music!
Yeah. Margo. Amazing woman!
Me too …. I wish..
The Trinity Session remains one of my favorite albums of all time... but this version is just beyond words brilliant!
Lou Reed always said that the version of Sweet Jane on their breakthrough album, The Trinity Session, was the best ever (including his own!).
I agree the vibe is on another level
@Alexander Martinez - It’s such a joy to post a video and realize how many other music lover’s are riding the same wave while catching the vibe on another level - and loving every bit of it! 💕
Yes , he did
I remember hearing that as well back in the day. Always loved this cover.
RIP Lou Reed.
I saw them in 1998/1999 on the campus of OSU at Newport Music Hall. During the songs, total silence as the audience took in what was one of the most heartfelt concerts I’ve ever been to. I’m so glad I was able to see them live even once. Her voice, is perfection.
wow... what a great version.... Lou Reid said this is his favorite version. I like playing both live versions, RockNRollAnimal and the Cowbory Junkies version.... WOW... And the Junkies is a tight band... And one beautiful woman leading the band. I couldn't concentrate playing without looking at her in a loving way.
@aciccare - Thank you for your comment 💕
Thanks for the post! Can listen over and over! Then more!
My mom absolutely loved them and this was her favorite song on the album. I wish she could have seen this! Oh my heart! ❤
@ A Salt Weapon - Our love to you and your mom❣️
To you sweet Jane who we lost during covid you were the best I miss you 😘
'Way cool how the mandolin escorts the tune in with distortion and then flies over and under it!! So cool, bravo, with accordion!! Yea...cool as cool can be!! Well done, Lady and gentlemen!
Aint that amazing!!!! Wow!
Never heard a mandolin do that and I've seen some amazing mandolin performances from Chris Thile and the Punch Brothers.. I guess I never thought to put effects and overdrive on a mando. Cool stuff
Not to many covers can touch this, actually nobody
This is boring if you want to start moving go to Mott the Hoople the best cover of this
All comments welcomed as long as there is no trolling.
One of the "coolest" bands ever...such a great and unique vibe
One of my absolute favorites... This band is incredible.
"Sweet Jane" and "Fade Into You" were the two songs that bring me back sweet and sour memories with my old girlfriend.
I believe I just Found A new favorite version Of this iconic song! absolutely great.
Never heard a Mandolin played quite like this. I am impressed.
WOW, 67 years old and never heard this. AWESOME!!!!!!!
...not even LOU live on rock n roll animals 😮
Hunnhh ? ?
4:28 I’ve watched and listened to this video literally 100’s of times. I never tire of it…each time is like the first. I wish I had seen them live.
👍👍👉💯💯💯💯💯👍💯💯💯💯💯💯😆👍❤
@danmmmarthy3599 - Thank you for being such a devoted fan of the Cowboy Junkies version of “Sweet Jane”! I love that you love it!
Brilliant. Electric. Fully charged Cowboy Junkies.
Never in my life have i seen individualism by the whole team, produce a fantastic product of teamwork. Love the 5 secs just before the end where everyone tries to squeeze through the same small door. Lol
Very excellent musicians couldn't put together a band maybe better than this for this particular song. It just slows naturally nice and long tight very bluesy. Thanks for the music
Thanks for sharing this Cowboy Junkies video. Brings back fond memories, something like 33 years ago. When I first heard them, remembering how soulful and sublime their sound was - and is. Remembering how the passion and authenticity of their music got me through challenging times. Also, remembering having a crush on Margo back in the day. I remember when I saw them at the Madison Civic Center over 30 years ago, throwing a rose on stage after their final encore song. Thanks for reminding me how special this band is, and how special Margo’s singing prowess is. I’m quite inspired to see them jam in true Junkies form after all these years. Thanks again!
Thank you for sharing your touching experience with the Cowboy Junkies. 🌹💕
What a find! So good...thanks 'Blythe Spirit'...
@@half-lifewife Thank you, Half-Life Wife. I love your name💕.
@@blythespirit4077 thanks for your music❤
Quite glad Miley Cyrus covered this song .. For one it may be fall in love with this it is and secondly she did it good
the way they do it together is what makes this song for me.
Their interpretations of songs was always worth a listen.
Just saw them this past Friday 03/02/23 here in Melbourne. It was a beautiful concert; she had a bit of a cold but was excellent nonetheless.
Love everyone in Australia but Geeze is it already March down under?
Fantastic musical performance! Musicians at their best.
I have to say it again Margo voice is that of an angel I have been a fan since her and her brother performed on the Johnny Carson show 💖💥
They all do a fantastic job, but that drummer just nails it.
He's one of Margo's three brothers in the band.
He's so laconic. It's amazing the beat doesn't just fall off of the bone, but when it does it's planned and rhythmic. This guy is the pulse.
@@nothingman2976 Only 2 brothers.
The three Timminses are siblings, and Anton worked with Michael Timmins during their first couple of bands.
@@blythespirit4077 Yes, but you said Margo's 3 brothers... that makes 4. Maths not your strong point?
Lots of people can play this note for note however, when you cover a track you have to bring something to it something different and inspiring. Something to make you're ears pick up and for your brain to take note. Something to stop whatever you are doing and grab your attention. It has to have feeling and sole to it. This cover has the lot.
I'm a big Lou fan (who isn't?) but after hearing The Trinity Session all those years ago, this band own this song
Nothing like standing on the corner with your suitcase though!
Lou was amazing with this song.
Agreed, but I still like Lou’s version the best.
Well said...I Hope Lou would be proud ( who wouldn't) ? 😉✌️❤️
great music.......mysto hippie vibes.............such a sweet jane....bllessings
Margo absolutely smolders with her sultry delivery .
Michael McLoughlin This is a great version of a great song. Her vocals are sensual, The whole band is good. Somewhere Lou Reed is smiling.
Probably saying, "Another band that missed that extra chord..."
Sublime version 🥰❤️🔥🤘
First time I have heard them, or this. Oh yes!
This song resonates to my very soul. I've been listening to it for over 40 yrs. It still speaks to me.....and I love it 😍
Wow ! Sweet Jane becomes an absolute journey. Just beautiful. Traces of Celtic influences like wisps of smoke like trance.
What a beautiful comment.💕
You captured that, it must be why I love this cover so much. Great job by the Cowboy Junkies, well done.
Wow! Flashback to 1987, freshman year in college, hearing this version by the Cowboy Junkies on college radio for the first time!
Brilliant song ❤this video is so good getting all the musicians in 🎶 thankyou cow boy junkies... music has been getting me through the day. But this song has got me though years sweet sweet 💜
Unexpectedly fresh interpretation of this one. Mandolin and accordion add different colors than Mott used 'back in the day'. Interesting indeed...
agreed....I think these guys are really underrated
That distorted mandolin during the intro is great!
@@rhllnm Indeed! Some of the fine folks in this house think it's 'awesome'; others, not so much. 'Like something John Paul Jones or Jimmy Page might have done'. A different interpretation, at any rate, no?
Damn I love this song …
Their rendition of Lou's song is so beautiful.
If I could sing like her I would rule the world.
When there's a tremendous solo on an overdriven mandolin plugged into an amp, but the confused cameraman is showing the guitarist :)
That's a VERY nice version of Sweet Jane! Sometimes live IS better. WOW!
CBJs are always better live. Catch a show if you can.
Sure just ask the grateful dead if live is better than recording in the studio. They were easily the biggest example of a band that dedicated everything they could to making the live experience great for everyone. Although I think one of the best records the cowboy junkies ever released was that 200 more miles collection. idk maybe I'm just kinda a live music nut. You just gotta keep on livin. L I V I N
sometimes but not in the case of this song. the stripped down studio version was the most true.
Total and complete Canadian content! After hearing this you'll have a heart no doubt!❤
Fucking Superb. I can listen to it back to back, day after day!!!
Fab..... music speaks for itself 😊
One of my favorite songs no matter who does it, but I may enjoy their version best. Seeing them do it a few months ago in Homer NY was wonderful Sorry Lou
This song plays me and causes tear-water to fall on my cheeks. With a great wanton....OH, Gawd.
Went to see Cowboy Junkies last night at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney (BTW - a great venue). They opened with this song. Margot had been ill for a couple of days -(inbed until a couple of hours before the show) She got up and performed all night. Yes, she had a couple hassles with the cold and I gather they changed her set list as she wouldn't have been able to perform some songs. The audience really appreciated her effort under difficult circumstances. Great band and hope you are getting better Margot.
@Allan Briggs - I’m sorry Margo was sick, but I am not surprised she performed to her best for the audience. It sounds like you had a wonderful time. Thank you for sharing your experience with all of us Cowboy Junkies fans💕.
@@blythespirit4077 Sorry for incorrect spelling of MARGO (no "t")

Love this band. I first saw this group in the late 80’s or early 90’s at the Yacht Club in Iowa City.
I thank you so very much for bringing this beautiful song to all of us 🥰
I Saw Cowboy Junkies In '99 ,...And I'm A Cowboy Junkie At ❤!!!
Margo reminds me of Janice Joplin, which is a VERY good thing. A fine band.
So good.
The way Lenny Laye looks at her...always makes my heart swell.
Man oh man. Who doesn’t love “Sweet Jane?"
Ah. We live and learn. Great version. Takes me back 45 years.
Queen E or Orpheum was first time I saw them. No cameras. Last word of Misguided Angel I took a pic. Noisy electric cam and flash. Usher took it away. Got it back after the show. I got a nice pic of Margo under red floodlight. Years later Commodore Ballroom concert met her after show. First I was nervous and almost stuttered. Told her the story. She said - Oh, that was you who took the picture!” Then said, “I’m glad they didn’t take your film away.” and signed my ticket stub! Beautiful lady!
Love this 🎉 after many years of life, I get it. Thank you❤
Seen in concert, Rio theater, SANTA CRUZ , CA. Back in the day!! Agreed 💯 percent....FREAKIN BEAUTIFUL!!
This was the first of their songs I heard. It is still a fave. And makes me proud to be Canadian.
She obviously connects to this song. I do too. Incredible experience watching and listening. Being able to sin this is unimaginable to me.
Use'd to listen to CJ's all the time, brings back great memories. Music has the power to do that 😊
Gotta say... Kudos to U TUBE for this recommendation... Never seen these guys before but I will definitely see them again.
Wonderfully calming and insightful. Let your life flow as this does and you’ll be grateful and happy each day. Just enough chaotic movement to enable one to stay awake.
It never tires me to listen to this cover. Hi from Holland :)
I like this version better, vind ik dan hè Jan ;) kzhead.info/sun/aqqdh7Sdf3h3gKM/bejne.html

Rock and roll at it's best gives me chill bumps every time I listen and that guitar solo is like WOW I've got that same guitar restoring it can't wait to hear that song coming out of it
Has anyone ever been loneleee yeaaaah that rite there does it for me. I mean dammit boy !!!! The way she does that is so sexy and real you can just feel that energy she's putting out ??? At least I can
Truly amazing and a fabulous homage to Lou... Bless you for being so damn wonderful.
@@lynnhenson3042 Don't think so Lynn... Lou Reed wrote it... keep taking the drugs , you'll come good soon.
Thank you for listening, Lynn Henson💕. Lou Reed did write and perform his song, “Sweet Jane”. As you know, many other’s performed it, too. I will always remember being in the balcony of the Warner Theater in downtown Washington, DC. Lou Reed was playing “Sweet Jane”, and those of us in the audience were so into it, the old balcony started swaying with Lou Reed’s rhythm. It was the ride of a lifetime with an incredible soundtrack, thanks to Lou Reed!
@@lynnhenson3042 I assume you know who Lou Reed is / was ???... just to add a little more info JOHN CALE and J.J.CALE are not the same human being.... One is Welsh and t'other is from Oklahoma ( where the wind comes sweeping down the plain !!!),...
