Samsung 2024 TV Lineup Explained: QD-OLED vs WOLED vs Neo QLED

Samsung has launched its flagship S95D, midrange S90D & entry-level S85D OLED TV lineup for 2024, but won't seek to communicate which is QD-OLED & which is WOLED in its marketing, so here's a detailed video to help you decide.
The company also showcased its 8K Neo QLED (flagship QN900D & step-down QN800D) & 4K Neo QLED (QN90D, QN85D, Q70D & Q60D) ranges at an exhibition event in Frankfurt, as well as Micro LED TV & lifestyle displays such as The Frame & The Serif.
The "Includes Paid Promotion" message in this video refers to the sponsorship by British AV retailer Richer Sounds. If you're interested in getting a new TV, even if it's not a Samsung OLED, please support this channel by considering buying from them. Visit your local Richer Sounds store to get the best deals through cheaper 'VIP exclusive' in-store only prices, or call telesales for your next TV purchase on 0333 900 0093. • I find it crazy - people claiming how bright their TVs go , and they watch in a reasonably lit room . That should just be for convenience and stuff like Sports , News , kids cartoons etc ( bright images ) where dark scenes , and infinite contrast don't matter . HDR is mastered for dark room viewing . If you have a TV that can do 0-10 000 Nits - if WILL always have less contrast if watched in a bright room compared to a 0-1000NIts TV watched in a dark room . The lifted blacks will be bad and it's impossible to overcome in a bright room . Would you watch a movie with a vacuum cleaner going? , so why watch on a movie on an expensive TV in UHD HDR in a bright room . If you want a TV for bright room viewing get a kick ass big Mini-LED at 98"

So I think for me a 77" Z93A Panasonic , or a 83 C4, or a Sony A80N 83" would all be great . All have there advantages . all 3 great upscaling . Yes I don't get best BT2020 or MLA+ /QDOLED nit boost , But given I prefer older SDR movies as well and I watch in dark room . All 3 will hit or better the 1000NITS . Larger size will better higher NITS as most common owner's response . Plus still allows a great deal on a 55" in say 3 years as another option that can hit higher volume/NIts. Plus if the TV I buy looks great, that will not change it better TVs come out ( most important point ) , Plus I will build a new PC in 2 or 3 years - that monitor will be fantastic

    • The S95C does not look clear; it has a huge big reflection of the ring light right in the middle. Very distracting. Hard to focus on what you're actually trying to watch. Spreading the same amount of light over a larger area will always be better. Of course, what's shown in the video is an extreme case, and there's a much better way to solve it: turn off the damn light. But if that's not possible, spreading out the reflection as much as possible will make it minimally distracting.

  • Hey Vincent, kind of off-topic for this video, but I would be so happy if you can answer me. It's about the contrast setting for Xbox Gaming SDR on LG OLED. Ninjician posted somewhere in a forum, that LG Contrast 85 ist extended range, meaning values for 16-255 and LG Contrast 100 is legal range, meaning values from 16-235. My question: why is contrast setting 85 correct for SDR? In the calibration menu within Xbox blacks should not be distinguishable, so the black eye disappears or is not visible with brightness setting 50. But the white sun is clearly visible with contrast 85. It only disappears with contrast 100. So black fades into black and white fades into white. Isn't then contrast 100 correct for SDR, where the source clearly only outputs HDMI Black Level limited range (16-235)? It even looks dimmer and kind of "not enough" when on contrast 85. What is your professional comment to this? :) Thanks a lot in advance and keep up your fantastic humour. *bling* 😅

  • So are these one connect boxes going to have the same 40gbps limit that ruins any high end gaming at 4k 144 with constant black screen signal dropouts that cause the video card drivers to crash when the pc surpasses that limit? I'm having that issue now with my s95c and am getting it serviced but in the end it'll go back to the store and I'll buy another brand (probably Sony). HDMI 2.1 heh yeah right not without having 48 Gpbs capable bandwidth, almost all my newer games are unplayable because of this issue.

You can obviously tell there’s a light shining at the display in both instances, so why settle for all the ugly trade-offs _just_ to obscure exactly _what_ is causing the glare? Matte displays suck.

      @grantorino9049@grantorino9049Ай бұрын
    • @@grantorino9049That can’t be true. I know you’re not exactly enamored of Samsung-fair enough-but making an unnecessarily confusing marketplace even less clear doesn’t help the cause of shedding more light. As I understand it (which is to say: enormous grain of salt) the *initial* 90Ds -may- be the same QD-OLED screens as used in the 90Cs (until stock runs out) at which time the nee 90D screens will be invisibly slipped into manufacturing. Now don’t get me wrong. If true that enormously sucks and is (IMO) colossally stupid of Samsung. The obvious way to handle the situation would have been to use only the new screens on the new product-protecting brand and consumer confidence-and using the older screens on a lesser product which may, therefore, have some “unexpectedly” better parts used-and just delay manufacturer discounts to move stock a few months to recoup costs. Assuming you have the warehouse space everybody wins. But this scenario takes something the Koreans (and Japanese) used to have before becoming slaves to stockholders-just like US companies-vision and room to act in support of the company long-term. But I think I digress… My question remains: absent (!) the latest generation screen, is their a meaningful difference between the 90C and 90D? Let me perl a layer back on my thinking. I had all bu decided to get a 77 95C-but the order got screwed up! So now the D line is out. Get the 95? Wait for the D? All everyone talks about is the 95D screen-not the considerably cheaper 90D. And not a word about the digital processing). Truth to tell I’ve started to reconsider getting the Sony x77a95l but it is out of stock everywhere, by console is only 60” wide (no problem for the pedestal Samsung). And audio is a significant consideration. I had the top Samsung Atmos sound-bar included with the 95c. There isn’t an equivalent with the Sony. So…

    @Displays.1234.@Displays.1234.2 ай бұрын
    • Indeed. Even glossy OLEDs have bad real-life contrast (not to be confused with PR “infinite contrast” BS) because they often lack polarisers, so they reflect back crazy amounts of incoming light, if used not in complete darkness. This is because the actual display matrix is a huge number of metal wires, so it is a mirror. Matte OLEDs are even way worse than that.

      @mstreich@mstreich2 ай бұрын
    • @@mstreich You don't need a theatre room, dim lit room is more than enough or even normal lights with no direct lights behind the tv works too. The antireflection dark layer dims reflections, its nothing like a mirror. Matte only takes the light and diffuse it all over the screen. Matte coating absolutely destroys picture quality, its not an option if you care about PQ.

  • So the decision to watching something in a bright room is a washed out hazy picture that is still seeable or a blotting of the picture but keeps the contrast/quality around it. It's like choosing between myopia or central serous retinopathy. Best to just watch it in a dark or dimly lit room to avoid most of these issues. Blinds exist for a reason or just leaving the door ajar that lets in some light which isn't in contact with the screen itself.
