  • It's an honour that these hyper-advanced mechs still choose to adopt a humanoid form, really. They don't have to, they could be floating orbs or whatever design they wish, yet they choose to be bipedal, with legs, arms, a torso and head in standard human configuration. Of course, that might only be for these explorer "models", they might come in near infinite shapes and sizes...

I was a little skeptical about Spielberg take over what Kubrick couldn't finish, but he did a fine job with even with the teddy at the end, which I think didn't take away the bittersweet ending.

    • I don't think they brought Monica back. I'm not even sure that scene even happened. It could have been a simulation imprint on David's neural network to ease his 2000 suffering looking for reciprocal love. The super Mecha could have deactivated david after his "special simulated day" to literally put him out of his misery.

  • I watched this when I was 17 in the theaters I always thought they were aliens. Rewatched this the other night and by their conversations I figured they were highly advanced robots studying the past particularly humans who created the earliest mechas 2000 years before. • The term robot really doesn't apply. At least not in our modern sense of the word. As archaeologists of a sort, they could be considered workers which was the original meaning of the word robot, but not in the sense of being essentially mechanical slave labor. In fact, the term mechanical as it's generally used probably doesn't apply all that well either. Since I don't know what exact technology is implied, but it's obviously meant to be technological, I would simply call them evolved technological entities, or in reference to their having a physical form, evolved technological beings.

  • Most people I knew that saw this back in the day thought these were aliens. I like the look, but if this is the future of earth and it inheritors, I would’ve thought their design evolution would’ve been more efficient and utilitarian.

  • I, and everybody I knew thought they were aliens. It's because, even though they have a slight 'metallic' sheen to them, they look too much like your classic 'greys'. This was the standard alien design since the 1970s, Spielberg even used it in _Close Encounters._ It makes much more sense that they're the Mecha from 2000 years in the future, the way they 'interface' with the boy. Funny that in 2000 years they still don't have Wi-Fi, they have to touch each other! 😬

  • In response to the question in the title, yes and no. Alien in the sense of being unfamiliar, but not in the sense of being from a different place. The depiction is of a future in which what's left of the culture started by humans includes technological beings who have chosen a humanoid form and who seem to recognize and acknowledge the value that humans contributed do the early development that led to their evolution. Basically, those are archaeologists, who discovered something from very long ago. So long ago, in fact, that it was a time we primitive humans might even recognize as familiar.
