    @charleskidney4279@charleskidney4279 Жыл бұрын

    • Please stop spreading bullshit. I hate seeing these comments from weaklings thinking every strong person takes roids. I'm 6'1, 98kg, 215ish lbs and can rep 140kg for 3 reps. I go to the gym 4/5 times a week and have good genetics. It's not super common obviously but it's not rare either.

      @simplysolomon@simplysolomon Жыл бұрын
  • I'd like to see those commenters get in the ring with Deontay Wilder and avoid getting knocked out for 3 12 round fights in a row. How much you bench and squat isn't gonna make a difference when it comes to landing and dodging punches, practicing boxing skills is.

    @handfloboxingreview1673@handfloboxingreview1673 Жыл бұрын
  • I think that the reason a lot of people are surprised by Tyson Fury's bench is that many people equate overall strength level with physical power. Yes, Fury is strong, but he is a champion in a sport that also requires speed and mobility. He can't push strength to the point it impacts his fighting performance negatively. His strength reflects his objectives.

  • As a person who boxes now and used to do martial arts before a knee injury made kicking irresponsible, I can tell you with certainty that there is almost no more irrelevant exercise to a fighter than bench press. When you think about it and break down the mechanics of punching, at what point does your chest come into play? A real fighter knows that a good punch actually starts first in the feet. A good punch starts in the feet, pressed through your legs, rotated through your core, and fired from your tricep, finally letting all the energy hit your target through your fist. Most fighters don't have big chests. Actually elite combatants have crazier backs than anything. Really, bench press is a fairly modern "vanity" exercise. If you look at hunter/gatherers or farmers or ancient warriors or whatever, they usually don't have big chests. Even if you look at early bodybuilders they have "small" chests and wouldn't have a great bench press.

Even in my own life, i had my ass handed to me by guys who i knew for a fact i was stronger than when i trained kickboxing and mma. And i've beaten guys who were stronger than me in sparring practice. Combat is multi-faceted and more than just brute force. People at the gym sometimes jump on me for “not benching enough”. That’s usually about the time I forget what day it is, and regardless of if it’s leg day or not, I load up a 1 rep max deadlift.

  • Punch power is weight X speed, this comes about through technique and is honed through practice. Unless the athlete is particularly judicious, getting an overly muscular upper body will get in the way of this biomechanical process. Strength training,done correctly,makes an athlete less likely to get injured. Strength training must be done correctly for it to benefit the Boxer.

  • Yeah benching has little, not nothing, to do with boxing. The bench press is just something I do because I want to. I've done combat sports for years and at best you lift lighter but fast with a bench if you want it to be somewhat relevant to your sport. It's somewhat applicable to grappling sports though, but even then you're better off just building strength within the sport so that you get more comprehensive strength.

I know boxers who have never squatted with weight, purely because it takes time away from working on their skills and the conditioning it takes to throw repetitively for several rounds. A lot of the clips of boxers lifting weights were dudes who wanted to move up in weight, which has absolutely never been an issue for fury. What matters is being able to put generate force, which is mass x speed. He has the mass and the speed, and more importantly the skill to deliver it

  • Bench pressing long term actually limit’s scapular motion, making punches more stiff and have less power. With the bench press you focus on retracting and holding the scapula while in punching or throwing a ball, you want loose scapula to have a better range of motion. Benching is actually counterproductive to punching power.

  • Being able to punch someone is more practical than lifting heavy in bench press position and on top of that strength of lifting heavy doesn't translate into combat sport as you need to be fast, your fast twitch fibers should be stimulated with explosive movement of particular action. Many strong man and bodybuilders can't punch fast cause all the muscles slowing them down and them never practicing the movement explosively.

  • I think a big reason for those comments is that people erroneously correlate bench press strength with punching power, not realizing that those are two completely different things. If I'm not mistaken, Deontay Wilder, one of the hardest punchers ever had a respectable but by no means exceptional bench press. He still managed to punch harder than anybody ever. The important thing to remember is that strength is domain specific: there is not necessarily a carryover from one type to another.

Boxers don't generally do body building as the training doesn't actually translate to fighting, strength training is OK but when you're that size you're looking for more explosive movements and that doesn't come from heavy weight training. You don't punch with your chest or shoulders. It's hip, foot and upper body movement that boosts punching power and thats all technique. People really think you "throw" or "swing" punches but it's really a "snap". Basically what I'm saying is fury probably knocks us all out 😅
