THE "EFFECT" OF 13 LB ON HOOK & HITTING POWER! 🤯

As you may know, the brands of Brunswick uses "generic" type cores in 12-13lb lightweight models. I use quotes around that word because the performance is anything but generic! Watch how the 13lb Hammer Effect stacks up against the 15lb Hammer Effect!

WHY LIGHTWEIGHT "GENERIC" CORES ARE BETTER VIDEO - • Why "GENERIC" Light We...
With the help of SPECTO data, it'll help tell the story about reaction shape, overall hook and continuation through the pins. Here are the SPECTO data points used and definition of each term:
Launch Speed - Speed measured off the hand.
Entry Speed - Speed measured at the pins. (What you'd see on your home center MPH screens)
Rev Rate - Revolutions Per Minute (RPM)
Launch Angle - The angle the ball traveled the first 10 feet.
Break Point Position - Board at which the ball was at its outermost position.
Total Hook - Total number of boards the ball crosses on the way to the pins.
Hook Power - Number of boards the ball hooked based on the True Breakpoint.
Entry Angle - The angle of the ball between 51 and 55 feet.
Impact Angle - The angle of the ball between 57 and 59.5 feet.
Pin Deck Exit - Ball position at the end of the pin deck.

  • I appreciate this video so much. I started bowling again last summer after several years away. My doctor and PSO both said that I needed to drop down in weight. I dropped down to 12#. When I would post questions or comments on forums regarding new balls the reaction was always dismissive or ridiculing because I wasn't throwing a "man's weight". So many people thought they were experts and told me I was wasting my time, and money, when I bought my Madness because of the core. I stopped posting and asking questions on the forums. I don't have delusions of being the next Weber, Roth, or Anthony. I just want to enjoy myself and have fun with my child. I hope some of the "experts" out there see your video. Thank you for this, and all you do, Nick

    • I feel u 💯! I have psoriatic arthritis and bowled scratch for years but have been sidelined in the last few years because it just got worse and worse. I'm on my 4th biologic and on the verge of taking my left leg below the knee because of the pain. I'm a golf pro, and it's heartbreaking to me that I'm not able to play as much as I used to. I am a master fitting pro as my job, but at least I still play to a 4 handicap and try to play a "few" times a year. I'm determined to bowl again after my 900 global split 360 degrees sitting in my club room for a couple of years. Point is... I went to a 14-lb ball and was given crap for it because I'm a big dude, but there is so much more to it than just being able to "handle" a bigger ball. I rolled 16lb balls for years and years. I am really strong, but if I tried to roll that, i would fall over. Keep on keeping on! 14, 13, 12 whatever ❤

Have fun and mostly pick up your spairs. I have 13 outings (3 games each outing) with the the 13#er and have a 144 average. I can just get "better!" Got in the 170's five times and 180"s twice. • This was a great vid. It tells us seniors we should not feel ashamed to use 13 lbs as we won't lose performance and may actually gain a different type of performance. 13 lbs had way more backend than the 15 lb ball. This makes sense as the same super responsive coverstock has less weight to deal with and was able to move the ball left faster and harder once it saw friction.

  • Historically I have always played a straighter shot, kind of the old school "down and in" and, over the last few years I have struggled with ball overreaction and overall arsenal over/under, because when I move right (Im a lefty) accuracy issues creep up. So I've tried everything on this house shot, from polished asym pearls, to urethane, to using new coatings etc etc. The biggest difference Ive made was dropping from 16lb down to 14lb. Im currently throwing a 14lb TNT Explode hit with a dull 3000, and it allows me to control the ball speed more consistently.

  • Seems pretty clear from your data that the "generic" core doesn't show a lot (or any) performance drop-off. So that makes me wonder: does this mean that of the extra fancy cores in heavier balls (like the huntsman - where we hear about how innovative and amazing it is) aren't actually as important as we're told that they are? If these results can be achieved with a simplistic generic core, what's the advantage to all of the highly technical cores that we receive?

    @GuitarSlam@GuitarSlamАй бұрын
    • That’s one way to look at it. At the end of the day, the coverstock is still 75-80% of your total reaction. Core and layout account for the rest.

    • Yeah cover and surface are the majority of your reaction.

  • I like my 14lb balls .. they work extremely well for me. I don't think I could throw anything heavier very well. I have a 13lb spare ball, and it works great as well. I do use a 12lb practice ball for working on release and other things. It's really nice to have the lighter 12lb ball for practice, warmup and training. It has worked out very well for me. I will say though, I don't seem to be able to strike as much with my 12lb. I have a tendency to leave a lot of flat 10's with the 12lb ball. In fact, during one practice I bowled an entire game of flat 10's and spares .. entire game was 9 / ... for a 190 .. try to do THAT on purpose .. LOL

    • I'm in my late 60's and my ball speed isn't what it used to be. At one time I was speed dominant. Now the down lane ball speed is measured at 11 mph. Messengers are a thing of the past and blowing a 5 into a 10 (I'm a lefty) is rare. I'm tossing weaker equipment with long pin to PAP distances in order to get as much length as possible to compensate. Also worth noting is I have a 14 lb. plastic spare ball that travels between 13-14 mph when I use it on left corner spares, so it stands to reason I'd have a similar ball speed with my first ball if I dropped the weight from 15 to 14 lbs. It stinks getting old - everything hurts now.@@brunsnick

      @BowlerJ1@BowlerJ1Ай бұрын
    • @@brunsnick Nick, I was wondering if you could revisit the 13 lb. test by throwing the ball more slowly. You throw the ball at 17-18 mph. At this speed there may not be a discernable difference in hitting power between equipment weighing 13 and 15 lbs. To be fair you would need to throw the 15 lb. ball as well but, if you could achieve a down lane ball speed of 11 mph with both balls, we might be able to see if there is a difference in hitting power between both pieces of equipment. Thanks.

I bought a 14# and feel like I drop it a lot. It feels very heavy at the bottom. I have so much more control with the 13# but get so much more pin action with the 14#. I almost bought a 14# Effect but decided to watch some more reviews. Your's popped up. So glad it did. I guess I should stick with 13#. Still not 100% sure though because of increased strike factor I seem to have with 14 vs 13. Decisions, decisions. Any advice?

  • It might hit on your dray ass lanes, but play a fade shot and watch that 13 take out the 10.. the lighter you go the more entry angle you need. Rev rate is also important. It is also easier to push through the breakpoint as there is less friction. I have averaged 225 with a 13lb and a 12lb for a league season, but that being said they are less versatile than the 14 or 15. More important though if you need to drop to a lighter weight the lighter balls are workable, but you will have to adjust your game. A good point the lighter weight cores are more forgiving and can improve your game.

  • The real question is why the companies charge the same price for a generic core versus the specific core that should be in the balls in lighter weight? This isn't just a Brunswick thing, this is a storm thing as well. You're paying the premium price, for a dated, generic weight block

    @302efi@302efiАй бұрын

I averaged 230 + for the past 15 years and finding the lighter ball fun to throw. I have a 13 but still can't seem to throw it for more than 6 frame before hand issues... So in your opinion what 12-13 lb balls would be my best choice ?? With my 12lb. Storm surge 2 weeks ago i had a 298 with a 5-7 and a 769 series... was very gratifing to have these results with an entry level ball....

Just a big lightbulb looking thing. Glad to know the "generic" core performs well. Would you say if you can handle 14 comfortably you should? What's the point of making dozens of new cores if they don't have an advantage. They should all just be mushroom/lightbulb shaped then.

I do also plan on ordering this hammer effect but I don't know where it will fit in that arsenal other than maybe taking the place of the hazmat? Would the arsenal be from top to bottom. • I guess this is more of a curiosity, but would the lower weight core make any difference in the 15lb weight compared to the normal core that is used in the heavier weights? Is this even something that could be shown off? I guess my inquiry is, would it make any difference between the higher performance cores? From my point of view, the coverstock seems to carry a majority of the weight here. Am I wrong with this assessment? Or is there actual scientific proof that the weirder looking cores do a better job of rev-ing up the ball? With that being said, I guess I've been on the fence of lowering ball weight due to the core differences. This has put a new light on that fence. I can probably jump over that fence and go to a lower weight ball in the future. I appreciate all of the information you're willing, and able, to provide.

    @grumpymonkey811@grumpymonkey811Ай бұрын
    • You’d have to adjust the size of the core for heavier weights. Otherwise, you’d have to make the outer core material denser and that would lower the differential too much. Dense “weird” cores create asymmetry and differential, which equates to more track flare potential.

      @brunsnick@brunsnickАй бұрын
    • @@brunsnick So it's all based on weight. I guess that does make more sense with the "weird" cores being larger to accommodate the rest of the ball. Thanks for the clarification.

    • @@brunsnick If the coverstock is so amazing and any core will work, and your vid just basically proved it, why should we worry about cores then? Isn't that the catch 22 to this? The core doesn't matter, yet the core does matter.. So is the 15lb better because it has core and coverstock? Yet the point to the vid is to assure buyers that the coverstock overcomes the core in the lighter ball.. which is basically saying the core doesn't really matter.. So.. the core doesn't matter?? Or the core does matter? And buy the 13lb because it works the same as the 15lb ball even though the cores are different. Which basically means the Huntsman core is not that special, as long as the HK22 is the coverstock... Anyways.. I love the ball, the coverstock and the core.. and of course your vids. • I still don't understand today's thinking. Forget 15 lbs, 16lbs was always king throughout history of bowling. I take a break from bowling and come back 2 decades later and everything is different. It was always said lighter balls would deflect more and heavier balls would add more power through the pins. 13 lbs is for a kid to me. My pro guy barely convinced me to go to 15lbs but I've accepted that and haven't missed 16 lbs.

      @brunsnick@brunsnickАй бұрын
    • I would guess a ball with less mass will be easier to change direction. The 13 lb ball has 13.3% less mass than the 15. Will that be enough to overcome the amount of deflection as it goes through the pins? Will higher speed (if you can throw it faster) result in more messengers? So many variables if you are able to throw both weights. I normally throw 14 but use 15 for my plastic (C300 white dot) strike ball as that doesn't need to change direction as much.
