On June 7, just a week before his birthday - Lionel Messi would shock the world when he would announce that the next and possibly the final chapter of his career - would be in the Good OL USA playing for Inter Miami.
That’s right, the skilled footballer we’ve ever seen decided to go to a league where a 38 year old Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored 31 goals in 31 games.
But honestly, after watching Messi look like he’s in his absolute prime, I can’t help but just absolutely LOVE IT. And perhaps, Lionel Messi turned down all those other offers because he saw a chance that many others for the past decade brushed off - the chance to make the MLS great and convince America just how wonderful this beautiful game is.

  • One thing I usually hear and I think is a big mistake is thinking that USA problem is that their stronger athletes choose other sport instead of soccer. Lebron can be a god in basket, but his height is not really enough to make him good at soccer. Good athletic capacitys are necessary, but you won't find a Messi, a Neimar, a Di María, Iniesta or even Lucho Acosta. You must find the young boys that love soccer above all. Those who play with a makeshift ball in the street or in gravel. And then teach them to play. Remove the "pay to play". Your clubs must aim for the Glory, not for short time revenue. I think the USA (as México also) has the potential to develop some future stars in 15 years. But some mind sets need to change. You can't develop athletes to become football players. You must pick the football players and teach them athletic.

Winning nothing in the MLS is virtually impossible for his caliber. Very gifted player but too much PR around him. If it wasn't for barcas insane midfield back then, he would've likely never been one of the greatest of all time. • It was either back to Barça for few seasons or taking off one boot somewhere else. Barça couldn't make it happen because of the financial mess created years ago by Bartomeu and his board of muppets. So MLS it is. And he's happy there. That's enough for me. He has nothing else to prove after the World Cup anyways. He is The Undisputed GOAT, The God of Football and The Messiah to me. 35 years old yet he's playing as if he's in his second prime. He is something else entirely and we will never ever see someone like him on and especially off the pitch. Still humble and a proper team player. Giving the capn armband to Yedlin was the most Messi thing there is. I wish to rewind time and relive it all over again because I know the end is very near and I don't want it to end. Football will be beige without him. Muchas gracias por todo Leo. I fkin love you.

Top all that with a decent pay from Adidas and Apple and his relationship with Beckham and no other option makes sense.

  • I wonder why some or most of the football fans have no idea that the first name of this sport was soccer - a short term used by the British for "association football" since the 19th century - while "rugger" was the term for "rugby football". The word "football" was interchangeable for these two sports. The decline of the word "soccer" for the sport occurred in the 1980s, as the rest of the world called the sport "football". However, Americans retained its original name to differentiate it from their own version of rugby football - American Football.

  • The "what if Lebron James played futbol" argument practically devalues everything what makes Messi and an argument Americans need to stop thinking about. The biggest sports in America are Basketball and Football, both these sports you have to depend on the genetic trait of height and size. Of course you have your outliers like Muggsy or Doug Flutie and running backs don't have to be tall but practically every other position you have to. In Futbol you can turn pro in every position (GK kinda matters lol), it doesn't matter your height or size. All that matters is how much time and effort you put into the craft, if America really understood the levels of play, which now Messi is showing it, they would start to love futbol.

  • We have a terrible league here in the USA. As long as there is bigger money on a more consistent basis in football, baseball, hockey and basketball, we in the USA will never have more than a development/retirement league. This is because all the spectacular athletes end up playing those other sports.

  • The only problem with growing “soccer” in America is that we have too much other sources of entertainment. In sports alone there are 4 major sports already competing for the viewers attention. It’s going to take a while for soccer to catch up. It’s going to take a catalyst like the men’s national team reaching major success to get the country as a whole to buy in.

    @harrykane471@harrykane4718 ай бұрын
    • Even that won’t do it…..because unlike the other 4 sports, the league does not harbor the best players both foreign or domestic…Messi is the exception, but his contract is for 2.5 years….. and that is not enough time for 1 man to spearhead the game here…. As was shown when Pele left!

  • Just an FYI on most of the stars named in this video: most of them won nothing. Basically only Vela and Beckham actually won anything. You could include Henry's 2014 Supporter's Shield in there, but otherwise those players came here, scored some goals, made some money, and other teams won the trophies. Zlatan in particular was flashy but useless. Nice looking highlights, pretty numbers, but the results in the end were mediocre, and he did nothing to elevate the team around him in his two years. Messi and his two compatriots in just over a month have brought one trophy, are in another final, and have helped transform the culture at Inter Miami. He's bought in to the long term project of the club, literally and figuratively. He treats veteran players with respect and builds up their confidence and he mentors young players. Maybe other players came to MLS to retire. Messi came here to play, and from the beginning, it's been game on.

MLS will not be a league to be taken seriously, Americans will not be a football nation, they will continue to call it "soccer" and probably will continue to produce some gems like Tim Howard and Pulisic over the years.
