Self-Guided Alaskan Caribou Hunt

This self-guided drop-camp caribou and black bear hunt was unique in that we were not in the Brooks Range hunting the migration like most caribou hunters, but rather hunting a smaller resident mountain herd in the Beaver Mountains, west of McGrath, Alaska. This was our first time in Alaska, and we'll be back!

  • I just had to comment! This is easily one of my favorite hunting vids. The fact that you included things like the pre flight gear prep/reduction, camp set up, the extras beyond "just" the hunting was great! Also the LACK of obnoxious music edited in and drowning out the sounds of camp was so refreshing(I HATE that people feel the need to drown out the sounds of camp/nature/the hunt, with bad elevator music). For just being a small channel without an obvious big filming budget or likely a ton of experience, you out did 90 percent or more of the "professionals" on youtube!r canned country

    • Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. With a $0 film budget and mostly just iPhone video, we were pretty happy with what we were able to put together. We're hoping to be able to have more out soon!

  • Congratulations on your successful hunting trip . Absolutely the best Caribou hunting video I’ve watched. Today is the second time I’ve watched this video entirely. Definitely one of my biggest concerns is if I’ll be able to sleep well in Grizzly Country. You guys sure have a Wonderful Video of your hunting trip. Keep on keeping on and Stay Safe !

  • Thanks for showing us what happens when one is not fully prepared for a hunt in Alaska. It is super important to test and use equipment before going on such a hunt. I actually only watched halfway because your camera up to that point has never shown us what you were shooting at. The early caribou shot looked reenacted.

  • thank you loved the video and sharing all the issues that can and do occur on a hunt , the fun and memories you had and made you will always remember . so glad you never drowned out camp life and nature with loud music which I think ruins a video that would have been great . thank you

I'm at home and waiting to hear from my husband who is currently on his first diy caribou hunt. It's almost day 7 and I haven't heard from him yet so it's nice to kind of get an idea of what he might be up to..

  • Lol, I liked your strategic plans for sleeping in a grizzly area. However, I do suggest installing a portable electric bear fence. Now another question came up: ● how far was that caribou shot? ● if you could only make it part way before you needed a break? ● mabe a gear review on stuff other that the sitka game bag? ● GUess non of you had a grizzly license? But yeah, drunk on alcohol & sleeping pills help you not to wake while your buddies are eaten; also works for one or two nights at least! Meh, that might be -proportionate to how many acquaintances you have left? ● so any N way what gun caliber & how far was that shot x2 in Rudolf?

  • Love your channel & your odd sense of humor, but your girls and wife rose is the best. Parents that hunt together, stay together, and the opportunities that in you instill in the girls are most excellent. As they grow up knowing and appreciating nature. I tip my hat to you & your good wife Rose. I do have a question: ● do either of you have a guide license? ● in the future, would you or Rose & maybe eventually the kids consider guiding private hunts for an outfitter? I''m sure there'd be room if the girls were interested in other aspects (eg. either digital documentation, editing, cooking and food handling, horse wrangling, or even getting a pilots license. I'm just curious cause our next generations of outdoor individuals and related businesses will be our most important.

We've heard the story so many times over the years that we can tell it word for word, which has kind of become a family joke. No more! We fully understand the stress and circumstances after our hunt and would tell the story all the time too!

  • Great camera work, nice slow panning, level video, scenery was amazing. Not a fan of Sitka gear in wet AK, prefer rubber impertech and layers of synthetic under wear. Boots, is a tough one, not a fan of hip waders. Xtra tuffs, are great in swampy terrain. Lacrosse boots are good also. Too bad there were not more caribou. I'll bet the peak of the Mulchatna herd back in the day was amazing. Thanks for sharing your hunt.

    • Thanks for the feedback! We definitely thought the KUIU gear outperformed Sitka given the conditions. The KUIU pack is definitely superior. Seal skin socks saved us with wet boots - I wouldn't go back to Alaska without a pair!
