The wolves here are timber wolves in captivity; however the mating cycle continues. The alpha male shows his dominance in the pack and mates with the alpha female in heat. Almost always, only the male and female alphas of the pack will mate. Others males want to get close but are soon chased off by the dominant male. During mating, the pair get locked together for a long time which is normal, as it ensures fertilization.

    • Actually it's more akin to ovulation, it causes the female to go into a period of time where everything is fertile and ready to conceive, her pharamones go into overdrive and that's why all the males are piled around. If she doesn't get pregnant during this time yes it's like a period in that the prepped lining and eggs are expelled for some animals but generally the heat itself if more an indicator of her ovulating
