I Made a Gary Oak ROM Hack of Pokémon Fire Red. And it was a Hardcore Nuzlocke!
Gary Oak was the OG rival in Pokémon. And lets be honest here: he was better than Ash for quite a while. But for some reason, people like Ash more. So lets play a hardcore Nuzlocke of Pokemon Fire Red as Gary. I bet he could have been the Kanto Champion!

Gary unironically worked harder for his badges than Ash.
For a lot of the badges, yeah he did. He worked so hard he got 2 extra badges, and still decided to fight Giovanni.
Tbf in anime there are many off screen fights ash does, like we saw he has ten victory streak we at most only saw half of them so it's possible ash also battle just as much trainer also tbf ash did had more info on pokedex going on, like oak acknowledge his research outside of battles

There were multiple gyms that didn't show up in the anime, trainers need to beat "at least 8 gym and earn at least 8 badges is qualified" , didn't say any limit amount of gym badges
Yeah, though it wasn’t really shown in the anime, there are more than 8 gyms to chose from. You might remember the episode with the scyther and electabuzz guy fighting each other. They were the leaders of two gyms attempting to get officially recognized by the indigo league. So we don’t actually know how many badges are possible

What if… Now this is just me thinking this; Melanie (who had Bulbasaur) and Damien (who had Charmander) were the other two from Pallet Town but never knew who Gary or Ash were. As far as I know/remember, Ash never mentioned Pallet Town to them and we never see anyone in the league with a Venusaur or a Charizard (aside from Ash)

I haven’t watched all of the anime, but I’m a HUGE Gary fan! My favorite part of this is that you obviously don’t do Gary’s voice, but your character of him is spot on. You killed it with his narcissistic and cocky attitude, and the jokes and memes weren’t in your face and instead were just funny. If you wanna make more Gary vids, you sure got my vote! 😁

I'll always have respect for Gary. As a kid 'beating' the elite 4 not healing; blissfully unaware that: GARY MF OAK already beat me to it! And the real championship battle just began, taught me so much. I always liked Gary, he had a Jolteon for me (I always beat him during the story) but he got his revenge (at first). I grinded, bought revives, and re-tried until I finally beat him.

Awesome video Think could've use Scyther I'd not Scizor as could claim Gary evolved it in Johto and used as a Scyther in Kanto Same with an Electabuzz for his Electivire Also did you consider using his Fearow, Pinsir, Alakazam and Seadra/Kingdra from his trainer database in the Silver Conference?
I did actually think about including them, but I decided that unless we say Gary use them in battle, I wasn't going to use them. He already has a stacked team I didn't need any more. But in the johto region, I may include them, we'll see.

I don't like how the Episodes are out of order. Ash being at Lavender Town should have had 5 Pokemon as that was before he caught Primeape. Umbreon against Sabrina is a cheat because Eevee was still Eevee when Ash returned from the Orange Islands it would have made more sense for him to use Scyther. The 2 Giovanni Battles could have been stand ins for the Gym Leaders we don't know of. Champion battle Ash could have used Kingler & Muk as he used those during the tournament. If you go with Orange League Team you could have used Tauros as well as Ash uses it at Pumelo Island.

Great channel and video. I have a serious question. How did you learn how to hack Pokemon games? I just got back into Pokemon after 20 years, and I want to learn how to do the same types of things (change Pokemon you encounter, change text, change characters, change colors, change stats, etc.). I'm primarily interested in the original games that were available on Gameboy. Any tips on how to learn and what to purchase? I have a Gameboy Color, Pokemon Blue, and a MacBook Pro currently.
These kinds of hacks are done on Roms not cartridges. I dont know exactly how for pokemon but I know for fire emblem they have an app called fe builder.

Basically, you can get to a point where all the code can be opend with a code editor, like visual studios, and you can change it there. I'd like to point out that "earning" a badge is subjective. Yes Ash earned some badges by doing things other than combat because that's not the only way to grow as a person. When Misty's sisters wanted to just give Ash the badge, he flat out refused it. Ash also refused to force Pikachu to evolve to beat Lt. Serge's Raichu and let Pikachu choose. This is completely fair because the Anime isn't the Video Game. Ash actually did stuff to get those badges, not just defeat people in combat.
Maybe, it just is a problem that is pretty unique to kanto. I mean the whole point of earning badges is to be able to enter the conference and battle against other trainers. In kanto though, ash got half of his badges through either a lame “victory”, like using sprinklers on onix, or being given the badge for saving pokemon from a fire or making someone laugh. It gets so bad that in one of the Blaine episodes, ash basically expects a badge after helping Blaine even without a battle. So I get where your coming from, but I still think it’s lame how many badges were given to ash without winning a battle

Gary would know about the Diglett because he is smart like his grand father, the only reason Gary isn't stronger than Ash is because in Anime its not about how smart you are, it more about how much "friendship" you build with your partners, that is why Ash's un=evolve pokemon are so strong.
Well that and at times plott armor. Thou Ash realisticly lost every league until he went back to school and got educated. And let his Pokenon evolve.

I just changed the code to make him evolve at level 37? Instead. I didn’t do that for anyone else, but if you wanted to the universal Pokémon randomizer can modify a Rom to allow those evolutions
Blue and gary are different characters. Red blue and green started with the starters, red being charmander blue squirtle and green bulbasaur, gary took eevee and ash took pikachu

Gary didn’t get enough screen time in the series. We should’ve seen him have full battles with Ash like 8 times. He was the main rival for like 5 seasons. The fact that we didn’t know his starter till the Johto League is ridiculous

Something I have been contemplating is a Firered hack that changes everything back to the Gen 1 encounters and movesets. I wonder how it would all play with the access to abilities, and improved AI. And yes, Gary like Blue is a better Trainer. Remember that you beat Blue AFTER he already fought through the E4 and likely the previous champion. Also also, I am dissappointed you didn't follow tradition and call your rival "Ass Ketchum"
No lie, I was looking for a nidoran on route 22 for a slid 5 minutes until I realized they werent there in gen 3. Most encounters I think are similar enough, but the moveset change would be rough.
