For all you know, he could be the most caring trainer in the world! Tbh, I didn’t really watch the sinnoh region growing up either, so I’ve seen more of it in the past few months working on this video than I ever did as a kid.

In the anime, Paul used Magmar against Maylene's Lucario. You could have recreated that as well.
Paul is one of my favorite characters and rivals in Pokémon. He’s phenomenal at battling so I love how you did this!

Really fun seeing you play as Paul, I liked how you made Ash your rival and give him his Sinnoh team. My favourite part had to be the final battle with Ash, I liked the recreation of their final battle from the anime. Looking forward to the Sinnoh Ash video.

Regarding Paul: His "competitive game" approach is counter to the Anime's take on the Pokémon world but is mostly limited to releasing captures that he doesn't intend to put time into which while strange isn't really "bad" in the case of, say, the Starlys but becomes traumatic in instances like Chimchar's where he was around for awhile forming a bond and already having been subjected to that kind of harsh training. His very harsh training methods are awful or even abusive... depending on the Pokémon. The Honchcrow, Weavile, Aggron, Magmortor, Electivire, and Drapion lines he trained are all "Thug" or "Monster" species the textbook examples of which would absolutely excel in such a training environment and cases could certainly be made for the rest of his known roster including a potential Staraptor or Infernape. The specific Chimchar that was eventually released and ended up with Ash is an excellent example of incorrect species-based Trainer assumptions since Infernape's line on paper should take well to Paul's methods but this was not one such example resulting in physical abuse and psychological trauma that was later worsened by abandonment when it became clear it couldn't keep up. He's definitely an arrogant jerk but I always thought that trait shone far more prominently than normal towards and around Ash, an individual who has nigh identical experience to himself, whose mentality and training methods are the opposite which immediately leads to animosity. "Nigh identical experience" as in Paul had by this point participated in the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn Leagues like Ash (not necessarily in that order) but not the Orange League or Battle Frontier, although he's aspired since soon after receiving Turtwig to eventually be good enough for the latter, hence why Paul had fully evolved Pokémon like Weavile from the start of this series. Don't ask me why Paul of Sinnoh's Veilstone City who received his Turtwig starter from Prof. Rowan in Sandgem Town (hence the knowledge on how to evolve his presumably Johto Sneasel) waited to tackle his home region's Pokémon League until participating in three others from distant regions because if one was provided beyond the writers wanting to further deepen his narrative similarities to Ash then I'm unaware.

I would assume that Paul wanted to be near the Battle Frontier from the get go, but simply couldn’t measure up to the Frontier Brains after his first league so he decided to just head over to Johto and Hoenn then back to Sinnoh.

Pretty much. Catching three starlies at once and releasing the weaker ones is totally something I would do. I can't even begin to tell you how many charmanders I bred and released looking for the perfect one.
@@NuzlockeJoe when I had my X game, I transferred all my Mons from Gen 3-5, Bred them (especially ones with egg moves) and gave away all the Mons I didn’t really need

Awesome video How about doing HGSS Paul Locke as well? Also did you consider Paul's Journeys Pokémon of Gyarados, Metagross and Garchomp? Maybe also do BW and B2W2 for Trip and Cameron from the anime?
The reason I excluded his journeys Pokémon is because he didn’t have them in Sinnoh, and I didn’t think I’d need them here. For HGSS, I’m not sure. It wouldn’t be too much work since I already have the sprites and all, but we’ll have to see.

I do recommend getting both Shining Pearl and Brilliant Diamond though since Murkrow, Gligar, and Elekid are exclusive to BD and Magby and Teddiursa are exclusive to SP, meaning you'll need HOME or a way to trade more than likely

Y'know, when Diamond, Pearl and Platinum first came out (namely 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009), I named the G4 rival (Barry) Paul as tribute to the dude.

Yeah. So I used the universal Pokémon randomizer to make them evolve when they level up with the required held item

@@user-ip5sw9ny4i if you can play regular ds roms on your android, this will work too, but you’ll need to patch it first. For that, I’d use a computer and follow the instructions in my google doc

Why didn’t you just play through platinum normally? You could get a lot of Paul’s mons in a normal play through also Paul didn’t get ride if azumaril after that one fight he actually hangs on to it till after the 2 gym by trading it awat

He did have a chimchar at the start of the sinnoh region, but he already had a fully evovled torterra by then. He mentions in one of the episodes when his torterra is hurt that he was Paul's starter. I believe its the episode he got decimated by Cynthia.

No, aside from the changes I specifically state, the game is a base platinum one.

He had both pokemon at that point, just like ash had all three starters for his first two regions.
