Post Office: Former executive accused of lying to inquiry

2024 ж. 25 Сәу.
196 710 Рет қаралды

The inquiry into the Horizon IT scandal has heard that the Post Office's first reaction to the suicide of a subpostmaster it accused of stealing was to hire a media lawyer to protect its reputation.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
It came as former top executive Angela van den Bogerd tested the patience of the inquiry's barristers. One branded her evidence "word soup". Another accused her of lying throughout her two days of testimony.

    • But when the Inquiry is complete and the chairman publishes the report it will be damning. I am certain that the Inquiry team see exactly the same as you and I see - the lies, the blame-shifting, the deflection, but they have the paper trail that shows exactly the culture of denial and who is responsible. That will certainly result in prosecutions. I say this because the core participants,m those who ask questions at the end, are ruthless and frank in accusing these charlatans of lying, and openly blame them of perjury. They would not do that if they thought they were not on very safe ground.

    • That kind of questioning by a journalist always makes me uncomfortable. There has been a trend for about 30 years now to put the journalist center stage and to be provocative in news reporting. What is the point of asking a question like that when the person being questioned is not going to respond (except with a prepared generic statement). It's 'sound bite' journalism, instead of factual reporting.

    • The Inquiry was launched more than two years ago, and will conclude this Autumn. Any trial(s) will be separate matters, no doubt greatly helped by the recommendations/findings from the Inquiry. The police are already investigating certain individuals, and any legal proceedings will no doubt be instigated by them in due course.

    • Because they have different objectives. The purpose of the inquiry is to investigate and find out what happened. A criminal trial is testing people's behaviour against criminal law. Two very different things. In theory it is possible that as evidence is revealed in the inquiry, that it may be discovered criminal offences have been committed which could be prosecuted later. Then criminal trials may result. But you can't prosecute unless you have evidence. If you do that, the court case will collapse and be a complete waste of tax payers' money.

      @deang5622@deang56229 күн бұрын
    • this is a statutory inquiry and it does not have full prosecutorial powers, however since evidence is given under oath, if, in the findings, the head of the inquiry feels that perjury has been committed then criminal charges will follow, from the way things are going quite a lot of people will be imprisoned, and if evidence is related to any prosecutions any recommendation as to criminal charges will be acted upon

At one point she wholly contradicted one of her own emails when it was right up on the screen and the entire room was reading it (as well as, hopefully, police and future lawyers of the innocent SPMs who will be able to begin EXTREMELY expensive prosecutions soon.) Quite curious to see someone who's existed in an entire professional career so utterly cornered, yet cannot quite cope with reality and believes EVEN NOW that lying and evasion and business-speak will save her from a well-deserved financial ruin when she's prosecuted over and over and over and over again by the families of the dead and ruined SPMs she's wilfully had a hand in prosecuting. • I am afraid it is. Not in a criminal court it isn't, as you are expected to know what laws apply to you. Here, this is not a criminal trial, it is a statutory enquiry. In this type of enquiry, witnesses are sworn in under oath so if they lie they can be charged with perjury. If they refuse to cooperate they can be fined or imprisoned. But fundamentally, in this type of proceedings, the inquiry is not testing these people and their behaviours against criminal law. That's the purpose of a criminal court, not an inquiry.

  • Jail is too good for Mrs V D B and many of the other Post Office Ltd. officials. There’s a far too common theme with most of these POL officials when being questioned regarding incriminating details, “they can’t remember”. Or, when they are presented with an email that they received from years ago showing that they knew only too well what was going on, they happened not to have read the said email or didn’t take on board the emails content. Again, jail is too good for many of the other Post Office Ltd. officials

Electing to be morally and ethically bankrupt by being part of the mechanism of vindictive falsehoods, and cover up to put the PO reputation above that of the truth. To add to her negligence and vindictive actions, she repugnantly and knowingly signing a statement of truth that she knew was far from the truth, with far and reaching consequences to the victimes. THAT IS PERGURY, an AFRONT TO COURT, and FRAUD FOR GAIN.

But the evidences show that her so call help helped no one and destroyed lives instead. Her words are blatant lies. Yet she is not prosecuted. What kind of justice is this? She also conveniently forget things she was responsible for and remember very detailedly it was always other PO executives’ wrongdoing. Nothing to do with her.
