My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next. Please leave your message after the tone.
ROTFL!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL I gotta use this.
"fearless" legions. Not felix.
davidsirmons Uh, no. I'm pretty sure he said Felix Legions.
It's Felix.
Joaquin Phoenix 2000: "One of the most disturbing performances ever" Joaquin Phoenix 2019: Hold my beer...
Hold my smile
Surprised he's kept the cleft palate all these years!
@@exumbra1399 - Why not? It's his trademark and is encouraging for other people born with one.
He’s still a weirdo
Lucca Caixeta he’s really not, but carry on. 😒
"The Gladiator movie does not do justice to how absolutely insane Commodus actually was" _ My Roman History Professor
Right? I just saw a documentary about him - tried to rename Rome! This really is how Marcus Aurelius should have handled it
I still can’t believe Joaquin Phoenix didn’t get an Oscar for this role.
Now he's gonna get it for joker
@@rashmigogoi32 fingers crossed
@channelmine34 I mean........ Yeah????? The Master is still his best performance i think. People are only talking about Joker, but like, that was really good! Still haven't decided which I like best
The question, almost 20 years after this movies release is; Why the fuck haven't they given an Oscar to Joaquin Phoenix yet?
@channelmine34 Yeah, well... still about 10 times better than what one usually gets an Oscar for, no doubt! And I disagree.. It was a quite hard role to play (hard to make it look authentic) and he nailed it! I'd say he's effort was 9/10-10/10 for that specific role and the best acting in that movie, together with the Gladiator team owner (forgot his name) that died before they finished shooting the film and Marcus Aurelius though only appearing for a few scenes.
Mad Maximus: Fury Rome. That made my day!!!
Would make an awesome movie. Chariots instead of vehicles.
@@nathanbarnes6869 *cars
This was the point my head flew back and laughed wildly
Even how he pronounced Joaquin Phoenix`s name.
Yeah that would have been a awesome title for a movie.
the early 2000s did give us the *LOTR* films, so there's that.
Yeah but the early 2000s also ended the 90s and that gave us half of Buzzfeed's content

The actor who played Joffrey based his performance on Joaquin Phoenix's in this movie. It shows. P.S. This is the first of many times the Academy didn't give Joaquin an Oscar he deserves.
Agreed!!
I got good news
That's some smart character preparation.
3:03 was the most epic and hair raising speech any action hero has given to date you're not allowed to make fun of that lol
yeah, even with him trying to, still gives you goosbumps.

I don't get it.....
You really couldn't find much here couldn't you, that's how good this movie was :D
yeah this movie is too good
just because talking about laughing soldiers and barbarians during the first battle as if it was a Larp event, or the legionaries using javelins as melee weapons would be too easy
Legionaries did use Lancia and Veruta both of which are javelins but also used Hastea that are short spears the resemble javelins but are not thrown.
@@Buliwyf90 Funny you should mention that as one of a legionnaire's main weapons is a...javelin. Greek Hoplites as seen in 300 were famed for their use of spear and shield in melee combat.
@@zacksmith3398 yep...the short swords are what defeated the Etruscans and Hannibal, because they could encircle the spear-wielders who couldn't turn.

"A hundred times more real than 300." That makes 30000. You dont need to thank me.
Nope, a hundred times more than 300 is 30300.

"Basically Jaime Lannister, if he couldn't do anything right." ....so basically Joffrey?
yes
The actor ano plays Joffrey said he based the character on comodus
Just saying, yes Hans Zimmer did compose the scores for Pirates 2, 3 and 4, but the original was composed by Klaus Badelt with Zimmer as producer. If anything, it means Badelt borrowed a bit from the music of the guy he was working with.
Was looking for this ^^
I had to come down to the comments to make sure this was here
Just about to say this
The original was mainly Hans Zimmer too, but he was working on the Last Samurai at the time and the studio would have gotten mad if they knew he was doing two films at the same time so Klaus Badelt took the main credit
i had to google that, as i vaguely remembered klaus badelt doing POTC. turns out they both worked on both movies...
Watched this again just to hear him say, "Why is a goat there?" XD
ECKSDEEEEEEEEEEEE
How dare he talk down to 300 goat.
I always just figured they were smoking something weird ‘
GOAT Greatest Off All Time 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
The battle against the Germanic tribe in the beginning of the movie is still one of the best historical battles in cinema history
Jesus watching you say "watching phoenix give one of the most disturbing performances ever" and then 19 year later he tops it with joker, he's so Underrated
Underrated? He received an Oscar nomination for his role in Gladiator, then won an Oscar for his role in Joker. Duly recognized if anything.
My only issue is the conflation of mental illness with criminality. DC sucks!
"Why is a goat there?!" Omg i just spat my wine

I don't care what they say Joaquin Phoenix was awsome in this movie, and I also understand Commodus with his actions. He deserved an Oscar for this performance.
ladymay30 same
Yeah he's easily the best part of this movie (which I think is kinda meh overall, and I love Roman history). He was so great in the 90s/00s in pretty much everything, and then it looked like he was gonna go off the rails and just be a crazy dude...but then nope, he comes back and is just awesome in everything again.
ladymay30 He was creepy as hell, and that is good acting.
Yep, he was amazing as the visibly disturbed Emperor in this movie and deserved an Oscar for his role every bit as much as Russel Crowe won an oscar did. While Joaquin Phoenix also did get a nomination for supporting role, Benicio Del Toro won it for his role in Traffic. Then again, Tom Hanks actually got nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Cast Away that year...
Joaquin Phoenix was the best thing in the whole movie.
Fun Fact, real life gladiators were more or less modern sports stars, and would do advertising work, they even had a cut scene from this movie where Maximus advertises olive oil but it was cut for being too silly.
gladiators doing advertising was probably one of the only historically accurate facts and they cut it out for being too silly 🤣

Arrow Season 1-4 Honest Trailer, I want that show burn with honesty !
season 1 and 2 were great, but then 3 and 4 sucked ass
Yes Arrow honest trailer
+Sameer Ladger season 3 and 4 is when they started putting in magic, which took me out of the more realistic feel the show was good at (though that's just me).
might as well do flash afterwards to
DrSmokeTrees I said that was just my problem with it, if you liked that addition that's fine. But yeah it did start to center around Felicity a lot after season 2.
The main Pirates theme did not originate from Hans Zimmer. The Black Pearl score was composed by Klaus Badelt. Hans Zimmer took over with Dead Man's Chest maintaining Klaus' themes whilst introducing new ones.
See I thought this. So did Klaus just steal it from Hans or what?
*insert thank you gif*
Wow! I actually didn't know that. I had always thought that he score the first one.
+Zach Gerrity I think it's just a coincidence. It's like how some people get John William's Star Wars and Superman themes mixed up.
Hans Zimmer wrote the themes including He's a pirate. Badelt and a bunch of other composers then made the score. Zimmer couldn't take credit because of legal issues. Watch the soundtrack making ofs for potc.
The actual reason there is a goat in 300, along with other monsters and stuff, was because it was meant to be told by a warrior round a campfire, and to show how they used to exaggerate everything and lie for glory, the movie 300 happens in the mind of a listener, rather than actually being am accurate representation. That's why everything is so over the top in it.
Also, the historical logs of Herodot, the most referred to source when you read about ancient Greece (because it is the most complete), is considered to be exaggerated. He was more of a stories collector than an actual chronicler. So from Herodot to the graphic novel to the movie 300, basically It's like a game of telephone. But the movie actually seems know that. So the whole plot twist of one of the surviving soldiers actually telling the story of the 300 to motivate his fellow soldiers before a battle makes sense and is also a clever commentary on Herodot (who never saw a battlefield).
Could've been "Mad Maximus: All Fury Roads Lead to Rome"

Awesome, awesome cast, music, costume, etc. This movie made Russell Crowell a star, but after a few other good movies, he kinda fell off the planet. Know what's up with him?
This is a public service announcement: Hans Zimmer did not compose the music for Pirates of the Caribbean. He was a music editor and score producer. The composer was Klaus Badelt.
Hans Zimmer is credited in IMDB and was Oscar-nominated for this.

When you did the Commodus/ Jaime comparison I nearly spat out my water - thanks for that!
When you look a little deeper it falls apart. Jaime, for all his flaws, is loyal to his family and would never betray them for selfish reasons. He also doesn't want power which is something Commodus lusts for. Jaime also becomes likable whereas Commodus always was a psychotic weirdo
Joaquin Phoenix' performance in this movie is absolutely chilling.
Joaquin Phoenix was the best thing in this movie.
Yeah he was.
Agreed. He should have won the Oscar.
Joaquin is at the time one of the best and most underrated actor in Hollywood.

The comparison between Maximus and Stone Cold is funny considering WWE made a Gladiator parody as part of Wrestlemania promotion back in 2005

With Stone Cold as Maximus lol
+Jadin Rosh I think that parody is slightly better than the Taxi Driver one. Hell, all of them were great.
It was for WrestleMania 21...Stone Cold did Gladiator and Triple H did Braveheart if I remember correctly.
What is bread may never pie.
Takes a well-deserved shot at 300, but many people would be surprised at the things in that movie that ARE historically accurate. The "Then we shall fight in the shade" quote is actually historical, and we know the name of the spartan who said it, even.
"Mad Maximus: Furry Rome" that killed me
Furry Rome, lol!

YEEEES
Russel Crowe. Gladiator, King Arthur, Robin Hood, Master and Commander... If you need a historical badass, you need Russel Crowe
King Arthur was Clive Owen.
Gladiator is my favourite movie of all time. And to this day I don't know why. Alien probably comes in at second, and I know objectively it's probably a far superior film, but there's something about Gladiator, it just strikes the perfect balance for me. A good story, good characters, good motivations, beautiful locations, epic fights, political intrigue. I don't fucking know how the film does it but it hits everything just right for me and it makes it my favourite film. I even know I've seen objectively better films and this one always wins out.
To me, it's the music that is the most memorable part. Aside from his death scene and THE quote. I LOVE the music.
I didn't forget about music, I mention every time I whatch Gladiator.
ikr xD
Russell Crowe singing 🎤 is just too painful 😖but this movie is amazing 😉
Oh I noticed the music. I noticed. But that speech he gave to the emperor about having his revenge still gets me.

"WHY IS A GOAT THERE?" Should have been a perfect tagline for a 300 T-shirt.
Not really...when you realize all the other things in the movie like giants and the oracle. A goat doesnt seem that out of place. PLUS this movie was based on a comic book! DERP!
