This week, Jack and Edwin take our dirt cheap £3500 V10 Audi S6 (which may be the cheapest V10 in the country) to renowned V10 specialists 'REPerformance - @REPerformanceUK who are more used to installing 1700hp twin-turbo kits on Lamborghinis and Audi R8s. Will they tell us that our S6 is uneconomical to repair, or will we have actually bought something that's good?

Might even be quite fun to do a Rocket Bunny/Liberty Walk style thing with it.

  • I learned this lesson the hard way a few months ago. I thought I was being clever buying a bmw f11 520d m sport automatic for £3,500 when they usually go for about £5k-£6k for the year I bought. Everything seemed fine mechanically, it was just cosmetics that needed work. Or so I thought. 2 days of ownership and i had a low coolant message pop up on the dash. Checked the coolant and found oil in it (which wasn’t there when I bought the car) Took it to my mates garage. They tested the HG which was fine so they set about getting the oil cooler off to check the gaskets on that. In the process they discovered the swirl flaps were hanging on by the skin of their teeth. So they got deleted. Then they found the oil filter housing was falling apart so that needed to be replaced. They put it all back together with the new parts. Remapped it to tell the ecu the swirl flaps weren’t there anymore and gave it back to me. 2 days later I had a transition fault displayed on the dash. Took it back to the garage. They told me that the cooler for the gearbox was on the other side of the one for the engine. And maybe coolant had got into the gearbox too. They checked that and everything seemed to be fine. They changed the gearbox oil and filter and handed the car back. A few days later I lost drive completely while at a junction. Got the car recovered to the garage where they diagnosed an EGR issue. So that got changed which solved the problem with the transmission warnings somehow. A few days later I started the car outside my house and as soon as it started something went bang and all the warning lights came on! The crank pulley had snapped and taken the water pump and thermostat housing out with it. So back to the garage it went again for more new parts. I had it back and a few days later the head lights decided they only wanted to work some of the time. So I sold the car because I couldn’t afford to fix it anymore. In the end including buying the car I had spent £7800!! In the space of about 6-8 days! If I’d just bought a £6k car I’d probably have been alright. It’s false economy to buy the cheapest version of a car. They’re cheap for a reason and you’ll probably end up paying well over the odds in the end. Just buy the best you can for the money you have

    @joshmerrick4716@joshmerrick47166 ай бұрын
    • Feel bad for You mate. You can buy car much cheaper but only if you really know what you are doing and good deals are more like once a year deals not on everyday basis. I'm from Poland and one year ago I bought car worth around £10-12k on average for £5k due to "broken transmission" issue when actually it was just EGR issue and on extra some oil leak, brakes to do and oil service. I did it myself and paid about £300-400 for parts and fluids, if I gave it to the workshop it would be about £800-1000 so still a good deal. Also did many extra things like cleaning the intake, add intercoller from biturbo version, remap it from 150 to 220hp, add some extra features but I don't count that because it was above necessary. But I knew in this particular case (engine + trans combo) it's some complex connections between PCM and TCM which many egr, injectors, turbo or intake flap failure can cause transmission safe mode and many transmission codes, evem make trans stop working unless other issue are fixed. Anyway I took some risk that 90% it's not a transmission but for 10% it could actually be transmission (so if that I'd have to pay £4-5k for replace it so the deal is gone however I'd not lost on it anyway just no profit). I drove like 20k kilometers since that and no major issues, I had to replace one sensor by this time only.

      @oluskloc@oluskloc6 ай бұрын
    • It's only worth it if you have a garage set up with the tools for that model and the know-how to do everything yourself.. ..and maybe a sponsorship :D

    • @@oluskloc the car I bought seemed absolutely fine when I went to see it. Oil level was correct and had fresh oil and coolant looked fresh too. On reflection I think what happened was they guy probably flushed the collant and oil systems through to hide the issue and then filled with fresh fluids before I came to view it. It was as described so I bought it. But I think a lot of stuff was hidden or lied about. I was told the swirl flaps had already been removed and I was shown the receipt for the kit bought from darkside developments. Along with a load of other invoices for stuff. But I think maybe the parts had been fitted to the other f11 bmw he had 🤦‍♂️ It’s the luck of the draw unfortunately

  • Had one of these for several years. Hit a deer and totaled it with 157k miles on it. Original engine and trans. It still pulled like a train and ran great up until the day I hit the deer. I was gutted. One of the best cars I ever owned. Yes, it's not the most practical car. Yes, there are maintenance issues that can cost a small fortune. Yes, it gets 8-12 MPG most of the time unless you're babying it on the freeway in the slow lane. But if you want the thrill of a V10 with the nice advantages of it being a 4 door saloon, and don't mind spending for occasional maintenance, it's honestly the best thing out there. It's cheaper to buy and maintain than any M5 V10, It's Quattro so winter is a breeze, and it's not $100k like even the low end used Lambos...Love these things.

Also in good condition, it actually retains some resale value unlike more regular car. If you were more careful buyer, you could have found a almost decent condition variant for less (less than price + fixes), but even this is not horrendous. Also they most likely could save some money by doing some labour themselves. The only big problem is that it's a bet that engine could be fixed. It might be more damaged than expected and therefore might be more expensive to fix.

You can get the intake valves to seal again by cleaning out every intake component with walnut blasting. Including the intake runners in the head. Some actually were able to clean the sealing surface of the valves with some brushes. But i honestly doubt thats gonna be easy !

  • There's an R.E performance in Bury, greater manchester. I had my custom built bottom end for my TT 350Z fitted there.. I supplied full gasket set but they forgot to install the head gasket. Overheating galore but they assured me it was fitted lol. Anyway, i got nervous when you mentioned R.E Performance lol. PTSD.

  • It would've been really interesting to know how much engine out repair would've cost. Engine rebuilds for those go for around €10k-€15k, but they are also getting fewer and fewer on the road (we can all guess why). The point is that the remaining ones, that are in good condition and DON'T need work, start at around €20k now. I can only see them getting up in price with the coming years. So it might not be a bad idea just to keep this one parked or fix it and then park it for a few years. 4 years ago i let my 20 valve inline 5 swapped Audi B4 quattro go for just €2000. Now these start at 10 times the price in non-running state, that is IF you can even find one. Most of them are already rebuilt/restored or scrapped and if you have one now, the prices is as high as some crazy fan is willing to pay. One thing is for sure though - it's still the best sounding car i've ever had.

    • Even the 10V inline 5's are going up in price. I was able to find a 5 cylinder audi 100 c4 for 2800euro another comparable one I found had an asking price off 7000 euro. Also went to look at a 4500euro audi 80 B4 and it was an absolute wreck.

  • I say fix it. Even if it’s mechanically totaled, CT needs a big project post-Alex and this S6 will be it. Just think of it, once it’s fixed, it’ll be the biggest (in terms of improvement) and fastest project CT has made.

  • Yall hold cars to a high standard. This is a $15k in the us. Tires, cv joints, rotors, etc look good to me. Injectors are a must for the next police chase but Ive never heard of seatbelts, inspection, or mot. she looks mint for roughly $4200k US..

  • Nice to see a mechanic on here that hasn't tore the car a new one he's only pointed out MOT related faults and the obvious running faults. So often the mechanics they get on here give a list as long as your leg and half of it doesn't even need doing.
