  • The Christmas pickle is a German-American Christmas tradition. A decoration in the shape of a pickle is hidden on a Christmas tree, with the finder receiving either a reward or good fortune for the next year. There are a number of different origin stories attributed to the tradition, including one originating in Germany. This theory has since been discounted, and it is now thought to be a German-American tradition created in the late 19th century. In fact, the New York Times reported that out of 2,057 Germans polled, YouGov determined 91% were unaware of the legend. An article I found explaining the Christmas pickle. Also, I love this series so much. Thank you Jimmy.

  • My personal definition of a Christmas movie: Christmas has to be a key part of the plot. That's it. If the plot would be sufficiently changed by taking "Christmas" out then it's a Christmas movie.

    • So that's a no on die hard?

      @henryreed4697@henryreed46975 ай бұрын
    • Exactly! Hence I disagree with Fwhip that Home Alone and Die Hard have equal amounts of Christmas mentions. The McCallisters left to France to celebrate Christmas with family. The Wet Bandits got info on the houses and when they'd be empty by posing as police officers and asking the residents during the Christmas rush. Kevin only talks to Old Man Marley because Marley had approached him to wish him Merry Christmas. Kevin's mom has a moment of anger where she screams "No, no, no, no! This is CHRISTMAS!" when she couldn't get a flight back home. The plot of Home Alone would not be the same if Christmas was removed from it.

Also, Sausage talking about Cuban Christmas traditions, the whole celebration overnight is common among several of the Latin American countries. Going to a friend's family Christmas in Costa Rica one year we learned very similar traditions and had an absolute blast. Over 50 of their family, but to mention everyone else in the neighborhood, celebrating into the night! So much fun, so much amazing food, and such good memories. Even not being with my family, I had such a blast. Also, for Sausage, sous vide is totally worth so much, steaks are just the tip of the iceberg...

  • The Christmas Pickle is a thing, but it tends to depend on geography. Americans attribute it to German ancestry, except no one in Germany knows wth we're talking about. My family attributes it to Polish ancestry. So, it's likely an early American immigrant generation tradition. We don't actually hide a literal pickle anymore, though. There are glass pickle ornaments available pretty widely now.

  • The Christmas Pickle tradition (commonly called Weihnachtgurke) is done with a glass pickle ornament, not a real pickle. It's a common tradition among American's with a Germanic background as it was said to be started by a German-American soldier during the Civil War. It's mostly practiced in the mid to mid-west United States, particularly Michigan and Wisconsin. Why Gem's family does it in Canada is unknown to me, because it definitely originated in the United States.. Hope this helped, I guess? lol

  • Toy Town, not even because Jimmy is a toy etc etc, but it's a Christmas town! You get toys on Christmas and you can build towns outnof them, it makes sense to me!

  • Merry Toy town is a great name. If it’s a toy town, then you’ve got to make a giant jimmy making his toy town with his friends.

  • Oh, I love that tradition Sausage talked about. My mom told me that when she was younger, my grandpa guys used to make kalua pig the same way. It wasn’t a Christmas thing tho; we’re just Hawaiian.

  • The lechón asado (or puerco asado) can also be done in something called a “caja china” in case you can’t bury it. The three milks in tres leches is evaporated milk, condensed milk and regular milk/heavy cream (depending on the recipe). Also surprised that Sausage didn’t mention buñuelos!! Which is yuca with flour mashed into a paste, rolled into like an 8 or a 6, flash fried, and then soaked in a honey anise mixture. Delicious!! Also, because of Spanish influence, Dia de los Reyes is pretty important for Cubans.

  • For Christmas, we have a few traditions. On Nov.12th, every year, we put up our tree and Village, (a bunch of tiny houses on our window ledge) and watch Elf and bake cookies that night. On Christmas Eve we go back and forth between a Christmas sweater or Pajamas so we can wear them Christmas Day. We always have this really yummy breakfast with potatoes and carrots etc. instead of a big dinner. It’s REALLY good. These are really fun and we all LOVE doing it every year. Love urs vids Jimmy ❤ keep up the good work!!

  • We have almost similar tradition with sausage in the Philippines. We party and eat all night on Christmas eve then open presents at midnight. We also roast a whole pig but not underground. It gets roasted on charcoal all day and the skin gets so crispy and its sooooo good.

  • Christmas Pickle: A small green glass (or other durable material) ornament hung in the Christmas tree late on Christmas Eve to be searched for on Christmas Morning. The one who finds it gets an extra present or treat. The tradition is believed to be from the late 1800s. It seems to be German-American in origin. One reference says it commemorates the pickle that a soldier begged from his captors on Christmas day that he credited with saving him from starvation (thus the treat). For children, an adult hides the pickle each year for the kids to hunt out. For adults, it can be a serious, or white elephant gift. If you find the pickle this year, you hide it and supply the gift next year.
