We test the Audi RS5 Sportback, which uses a 2.9 twin-turbo V6 and AWD.

The Audi RS5 Sportback is one of our favourite Audi Sport vehicles. It’s so well-suited to Australian roads. It rides incredibly well despite its stiff suspension and 20-inch wheels. Under the bonnet is a 2.9-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 that makes 331kW of power (443 horsepower).
The RS5 Sportback competes directly with the Mercedes-AMG C63 and the BMW M3, plus the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. It is a five-door hatchback rather than a sedan like those rivals, however.

  • Having come from a previous generation 5, I think the Sportback is the best looking of the new generation - the sharper body lines are much better resolved in the longer Sportback shape. I wasn’t aware that the RS5 had retained the Torsen set up of the earlier model, so that’s a major point in its favour. The real delight is discovering that it’s that rarest of creatures - an everyday supercar. Outstanding car, and a great review, Tom.

I'm thinking of buying him an RS5 Sportback as a gift next year for Father's Day. Looking at an RS3 sedan for myself. One big Audi family.

  • My wife gifted me my RS5 for my 50th this year and there was no change from 205k “by the time you add insurance, service plan, tinting and paint protection. It’s spacious user friendly and a bad ass vehicle especially when in dynamic mode. There is one down fall from Audi it’s the wireless Apple CarPlay when ever I get to a certain area where the trams are running it just drops out too bad if your on an important phone call. Love all the exterior carbon fibre upgrades just finished it off. Completed a Audi track day and totally agree this is the car for the track as it seems to have a lower centre on gravity than the RS3 & RS6 and sticks to the tarmac like shit to blanket. Great review.

  • I love this car - amazing looks, comfort + everyday usability, and that ever so important RS spice to round things off. It probably doesn't quite match the MB and BMW in terms of pure performance, but it just kills them in terms of practicality and looks. I am seriously considering picking one up used at about 2 years mark - still quite new, in warranty, but a hell of a lot more friendly towards my budget. Since I won't take it tracking I don't mind if it's not matching competitors to the T, it's plenty fast for the road. The only thing I don't like about the RS5 is that stuck on infotainment screen, that is probably the only thing I would change...

What I do really like in the s5 is the ride quality and nvh. It’s just so smooth on our chopped up roads. I’ve even kept the oe conti tyres with the foam sound insulation whereas I usually put latest Michelins on all my new cars on delivery. What is the ride like on s5 vs rs5, do you lose some of the comfort?

    @johnholst@johnholst2 жыл бұрын
    • Not dumb. MLB is actually a longitudinal platform. Unusually, the base four-cylinders sit longitudinally but have FWD. The AWD-equipped four-cylinders have a Haldex-type AWD system so they run more or less FWD on steady throttle. However, the six-cylinders and above use a Torsten-style AWD system that is rear-biased.

      @chasingcars@chasingcars2 жыл бұрын
    • @@chasingcars Thanks Tom. It's a bit tricky to find that specific info.

      @johnholst@johnholst2 жыл бұрын
    • @@chasingcars Even if they have Torsen differential with RWD bias, the engine, in this case a relatively heavy V6, is located entirely infront of the front axle, which makes the car nose-heavy and prone to understeer when entering a corner at higher speeds. Combine this with Audi's typical steering (unresponsive, inaccurate and not nearly enough direct for serious sporty driving), you get a driving experience that is dull and a bit boring, and nowhere near as dynamic as in the RWD competition (BMW M3 and Giulia Quadrifoglio), which has its engine positioned behind the front axle. In review you said we should update our way of thinking with modern Audis - I strongly disagree, they are still as dynamicly inept as before. However, this RS5 is nice to look at (if you ingore huge front overhang typical of FWD chassis), and nice and very very safe to drive fast, especially if the road is straight, but no way I would trade in my Giulia Quadrifoglio for RS5, they are miles apart in driving fun and driving dynamics. It's just no contest. Someone who mainly wants great interior will probably disagree with me. But then you can get the new M3 with xDrive, so why even bother with Audi RS5? I know, the new M3 is as face-ugly as it gets.

      @serpenthx@serpenthx2 жыл бұрын
    • @@serpenthx valid points. There’s just something about Audi’s though, they are always more than the sum of their parts. Meticulous attention to design and engineering detail throughout.

    • When lowered and with a stiffer rear sway and end links that understeer you speak of no longer exists…😉👍 And the engine isn’t “entirely” over the front axle. You own one? Happy to provide you more detail and/or pictures….better yet actually drive one that’s been set up correctly.

      @live.drive.mod.7290@live.drive.mod.72902 жыл бұрын
  • I really wanted to love this car, coming from a 2020 RS3, but the RS5 just isn't worth the premium over the S5 IMO. It's super fast, looks awesome, is easy to drive, and is super comfortable; but the refinement seems to kill the excitement that cars like the RS3 and M3/M4 have. For $100K, it really needs to exceed the S5 on all fronts... and aside from sheer speed, it just doesn't. For the money, the M4 X-Drive is on a whole other level: it's significantly faster, and the chassis tuning is so much better the RS5 starts to feel like a limo by comparison. Yes, the M4 is a tad fugly whereas the RS5 is straight up gorgeous, but that S58 motor is so insanely good, I'd gladly look past the weird styling in exchange for the performance. If you want a daily commute slayer with far more power than you'd ever need, the RS5 is it. If you want all that plus a car than can demolish a track, AND out sprint quite a few super cars, the M4 is the car.

    • I just purchased my 2019 RS5 coupe and coming from a Jaguar F Type V6 I couldn't agree more. I know the RS5 is a quicker car and the launch control is insane but the noise and excitement is a little numb. It felt like you were going quicker in the F Type even though you aren't. Its effortless speed I like to call it but not necessarily exciting. What is worth mentioning though is that with a little aftermarket work (£350 - £450) to delete the resonators and straight pipe it, it turns into a complete monster. Great daily car arguably one of the best for under £100k

I felt the C205 and F80 pulled so much harder up top and felt a lot more exciting. I honestly thought that a more appropriate name would be S5, not RS5. I think the high revving V8 was the highpoint of the RS4/5 line, but I enjoy the turbo BMW and AMG engines

    @bradcollins4114@bradcollins41142 жыл бұрын
    • If high-RPM pull is your priority, then this may not suit; it makes all that torque in the very muscular low- and mid-range, which I don't have a problem with. A C204 would blow any of the turbo stuff on throttle response and high-RPM sound anyway

      @chasingcars@chasingcars2 жыл бұрын
    • @@chasingcars True and thank you for the quick reply - I ended up with an F13 M6 with 600ps, that pulls very hard up top and once the turbos are awake at about 2500rpm it is just nuts the whole way to 7000rpm. The F80 felt similar but just with a bit less torque across the range than the M6.

What most cars that are that quick get wrong is that their ride isn’t compliant, so even if they’re quick in a straight line they struggle on a broken-up B-road.
