Sometimes very smart and intelligent people can be pretty clumsy. They are so used to work on complex things that they forget to be organized. It is one of the actual good observations of the Raimi Aunt May when she tells Norman that basically Geniuses tend to be slobs. A trait that all Spideys here share, all super intelligent yet completely out of tune with many things.

It was a directing decision for sure because edgy was the hip thing for movies at the time especially, but even OG comic Peter Parker went through some messed up stuff. It's not too much of a stretch to think that some version of Peter let those things affect him a lot more. Plus he's still a major dork as always. No hate to you man btw, we both want the best for Andrew's Peter :)
