In 'That Contracts Episode' Peter Crouch brings an old contract from his days at Stoke City in the Premier League. You'll learn what clubs do to motivate players, the clauses that are important for footballers and some random stipulations that don't make much sense.

Were you surprised by anything you saw in Peter's contract?
The normal retirement age is mentioned in the contract due to the implications for pension contributions.
What was that email address
only surprise to me was how high up the wrist (probably over the forearm threshold) peter wears his watch. am i alone here?
Stat man daves all good but I’d still rather play with my foreskin
Nice episode guys. At 31:45 when you talked about the PL Positional bonus did Stoke City include anything about winning the Epl? Of course those are massive aspirations, but I wonder whether that was the case when Leicester City won the title and, therefore, if the players missed out on a significant bonus for something perhaps unwritten.
"Letting them through, and then last-ditching them for a grand" LMAO! Brilliant!
Is that stat man dave
How fantastic Ahmed abdur
Wan Bissacka gets half is wages from this bonus
Couple of improvements to help the podcast out; Create a separate channel for short clips. This will create an extra source of advertising and allows you to use Buzzwords to get in recommended feeds i.e “Peter Crouch too OLD to play for stoke” then add the clip about age clause. Add timestamps to the video for different discussion topics. If people click certain timestamps that interest them the algorithym will likely recommend based on those tags.
So true all channels with videos of around 25 minutes or longer have them now. I’m a fan
Great idea!
Alright mate they aint gonna shag ya, seing what every other podcast is doing and suggesting it isn't your idea
I think they know what works best rather than some random on KZhead 🙄
@@racelox Or maybe, just maybe, the 'random' is giving constructive advice based on what they've seen work on KZhead
Love that Crouchy just went and played and accepted that relegation everyone suffers so why not the ppl that were involved with actually relegating the club that affects the city. Top Man.
LMAO when he said defenders are lucky they’re on the pitch killed me
Roberto Carlos wasn't lucky to be anywhere
Loving this! Keep it going lads. Numbers will fly up sooner rather than later 👍🏻
I think this subject needs to be revisited as there's surely so much more to unravel. It would be nice to hear Crouchy reveal some comparisons such as the Stoke contract vs Liverpool/Tottenham/Portsmouth/whoever. Also unusual conditions of employment or limitations such as not being allowed to ride a motorcycle.
yep i agree. often hear footballers who cant do things outwith sport to avoid injury. think they briefly mentioned it
Probably also a slightly different contract that Crouchy at 35/36 signs vs a Haaland or someone deemed "world class" in this era. Also being that every footballers "worth" to the club is on them actually playing, i.e, not being injured; the motorcycle clause definitely makes sense
@@umarifl7545 u what?
@@AmirHussain-eg3su Didn’t one player have a clause ‘can’t skydive’?
@@007Fusiion Was that Mark Schwarzer at Middlesbrough? Or maybe that was skiing?
Really enjoyed the defender bonus discussion!! Funny and thought-provoking at the same time
One of the most interesting ones you’ve done guys thank you.
Probably then best football podcast out there if I'm honest..crouchy your a legend can I get piece of memorabilia 😆
Just stumbled across this podcast and was entertained in the first 5 minutes! Amazing work!
KZhead is passing the pod!
Tips for growing this channel: Whatever you did different with this one!! 😂 I’ve listened on spotify many a time and this is the first video that I have ever seen pop up from the channel.
You need to advertise this more or something. Brilliant lads very funny. Glad I found it.
It’s advertised on Spotify, I think they have a contract with them. Maybe they only have the rights to advertise it etc. I know when you have a podcast deal with Spotify you usually can’t post the full pod on any other platform which is why you can only find parts and long clips on KZhead
Crouchy should tour around english podcast like jackmate true geordi and others to promote this podcast. I used to watch the old on and was suprised it ended. I accidentally got suggested by this today. Happy to hear Peter again.
35 years old is the age that professional players can draw their PFA pensions. My understanding is that by drawing the pension it precludes the former player from only playing on at anything other than a defined level of non-league (semi-pro) football - and associated number of games per week and training sessions are set. Plus due to the nature of their service, hips, knees etc. tend to need attention far earlier than other professions. Peter chose to play on past 35, and accordingly that has to be reflected in his pro contract
Thanks buddy
Anyone who joined after 2006 its age 55, 35 before that.
The legend of Peter Crouch continues to grow.
Love this show. I do miss the 5 Live podcast though.

Lots of likes and comments and it will get promoted more. Algorithm is brutal
Most listen via Spotify etc
No enough time spent on ads promotion?
The frightening lack of eye contact Peter gave Dave worried me. Poor bloke.
😂😂😂
Definitely do the rest of the contract!
Listened to The Anfield Wrap this week and Firmino was on a basic 67,000 pw but then in one game he scored and assisted to get his stats to a certain level and got ball park 180,000 that week due to bonuses activated.
Isn’t that what happened to de jong aswell which started all the shit because they refused to pay the bonuses?
Liverpool are known to heavily incentivise performance with bonuses, at least for forwards. I don't think the full details will ever be known, but it's said to be pretty significant in relation to total compensation and base wages.
Love it! Defenders are lucky to be there, thats their bonus!
This is my Theory. As it is ever more a team game. Every player should be on a team per season clean sheet bonus, goal bonus, positional bonus etc etc and this should then be divided between the squad on a minutes played basis
The first big point about agents developing relationships with clubs and whether that can affect how they negotiate for some of their clients is one I've often wondered about. As a West Ham fan it's well known our Chairman has some pet agents he'll use, until recently it seemed he'd take their word on players over proper scouting. But you wonder how many lemons they'll sign to get a better deal on a bigger fish etc.
I get all my Pod from the audio version, so I was really hoping I'd see what the Laout was looking like when I stumbled on the recaps, but no... holding the cards close to your chest, I see.
Great idea for the podcast lads, top banter and laughs, an easy listen and looking forward to more. As a Spurs fan big Crouchy is the Goat. 🤜🤛💙
Never supported any of Crouchys teams in the Premiership but hes always been one of my all time favourites in the league! Go C3-PO ! LEGEND! 😎😎
Need a part 2.
I can’t believe I’m just finding out there’s visuals for this pod now
I dont get how ypu only got 15k subs.. these podcasts are brilliant and intuitive.
This is class. No ifs no buts
Retirement clause likely to be for insurance. If Crouchy signed this (at 35) and then retired a week later, insurance wouldn't pay the remainder of the contract. They are acknowledging both parties accept the basis of the contract being entered into suggests no impending retirement and intention to fulfil full deal
Where else do we get to see a players contract and go through it😂 class
Law school
There was a leak a few years ago
Are u coming home? "we don't live there anymore" 😂 class!
As a big Stoke fan, I love these podcasts so much. More so today because I've just been dumped, but still... thanks for cheering me up boys
Dont worry about it lad , more fish in the sea
Head up King

Oh bless you, he doesn't deserve you..

This is top quality content
“I’m bang into fraud….. prevention” 😂😂😂😂
Speaking as someone who didnt rate crouch when he signed for Liverpool was laughing with the rest however after he broke hes goal drought there he won me over i saw hes quality with the ball i soon begun supporting him then when he signed for spurs he was brilliant there too and i really rated him till the end of hes career and then after hearing him speak in interviews and watching hes documentary you really couldn't find a more decent caring funny person u won me over vlcrouchie and you showed all the haters and put them to shame absolute legend in my eyes 😊😊
the pod introduces what can only be called the Fulham-Norwich Clause
So what clauses did they put into Crouchy's contract that the club gave as "sufficient grounds for termination"?
Striker's goal bonus is a bit a joke isn't it 😂As Roy Keane would put it "That's their job"
Harry redknapps view on goal bonus is quality. What am I paying you 50 grand a week for? To miss? 😂
I'd be interested to know if 35 Years Old Retirement age clause was in Crouches previous contract with Stoke. Could easily of been a copy of your original contract amended with updated dates, but they forgot to take the 35 Year Old retirement clause out. I used to put contracts together as part of my job. Majority of new contracts are amended Cut n Paste jobs from previous contracts.
Yep, used to do it for local government too 😂
I think up until 2006 players could draw their PFA Pension at 35 (I think its 55 now) so it could be a hangover from that and as other people have said it could just be a cut and paste from other contracts that hasn't been updated.
Nice touch getting timo werner on
To reach 100 tackles/interceptions as a bonus for defenders or clearances, blocks, duels won, recoveries. Could work.
Only found out about this podcast it's brilliant yous should try advertise it a bit more do tubes golf channel or Ben foster ones yous should have way more subs
#PassThePod
I would love to hear a podcast of your time at LFC
Can we get a link to this contract😅
Something like a "rate of arial duels won"-clause would make sense for central defenders or defensive midfielders. Like if you win 65% or more of your arial duels, you get a bonus.
They get to be involved... what more do they want??
@@V-Odyssey But of course! My mind must've wandered
Is the podcast still on BBC sounds or back on Spotify?? Also, why are the episodes so short now 🧐
They left the bbc. I don’t know about Spotify, but the new version is def on Apple podcasts
Goal line clearance bonus or block a guaranteed goal bonus.
I went to a music gig in Liverpool on the docks, it was pretty small and Crouch was there and he stood right in front of me, I couldn't see a thing.
😂😂😂
Full backs will be on assist bonuses now for sure! Crouch would love to play with Trent.
Last ditch tackle bonus 😂🤣
you can laugh all you can but in retail, store managers get bonus for having stationary under control!! i got in trouble once for ordering too many pens for a meeting :D it was part of KPI
'Normal Retirement Age' is probably a term relating to Crouchy's footballer's pension. He probably would have been entitled to it from age 35, despite continuing to play.
Changed to 55 now
James Tavernier at Rangers had 18 goals last season and 19 the season before that and he’s a right back , surely he’s got to have a goal bonus … fuck scoring that many and not getting the rewards ….. I’ll just hang back here and punt the ball up to midfield !
He definitely gets a new contract on higher wages. I often wonder what contract Ronald Koeman had back in the day. He’d score 20 goals a season as a cb and the team expected those goals as if he were a striker.
howd they get ramsdale on the pod?
"They're spoiling the sport. You're lucky to be there." 🤣
I am sure managers/ coaches know about bonuses.I head stories in papers where players where remove from squad because if they played 1 more game they would get a big bonus. Weren't there story about Barcelona player that didn't get played because he was about to get bonus for games played?
Was that not couthinho that was benched because if he played then Barca owed Liverpool something like 20 million ?
@@thepandacub54 Maybe it was Coutinho as well, but i was thinking about some defender - cant remember his name now. Also i heard over time a few stories of young players going into big clubs and staying benched and not given proper chance because appearances would trigger some bonus clause that big club didn't want to pay.
When Jon Arne Rise's payslip got leaked, his, as a defender had a win bonus. Which I think is the only bonus that should be in a contract. Win and you all get paid, lose and you get nothing. No selfishness or individual goals to work towards. Bonuses are stupid anyway. Strikers are signed to score, attacking midfielders to create chances, wingers to take people on create chances. Defensive mids to break up play and defenders to win headers and tackle. Literally getting extra money for what you are already paid to do.
The way wages are structured must be as FFP nearly killed off the R's ........got to keep it real 🤘🕊
Do players also pay the Agent as I understand that the clubs pay the Agent?
Defenders getting bonus for scoring goals from corners or set pieces??
Crouch , you will always be a legend .
Thanks A. You too. It’s actually me.
@@brianboru8858 😂
Is this the whole pod??
'lucky to be there' i love winding defenders up. my favourite is when they pat each other on the backside for hoofing a ball out of play. LOL
Chris I’m very familiar with footballers contracts and as Crouchy kept saying (despite you not listening) Ive never seen a defenders or defensive midfielders contracts that included a goals scored bonus. Nor have I seen one that had a “clean sheets” bonus. Goalkeepers contracts do however normally include a clean sheets bonus, which is ridiculous when you consider that the teams overall performance has far more influence over the goals conceded than the goalkeepers individual performance. “Modern” statistical stuff such as Opta stats and goals expected for/against vs actual seems to be largely ignored this far...
This part of the podcast actually made my head fall off. Honestly don’t understand how they made such a mountain out of a molehill 😂
Ridiculous thing to say though, because most every goal is a result of teamwork from other members of the team. If anything saves should be more deserving of a bonus because a keeper saving a shot is not a team effort, in fact he's had to save the shot because all other lines of defence have failed. Keeper should certainly get a bonus for penalty saves and I'm sure they probably do.
@@_Super_Hans_ no a goal keeper lumps the balls upfield from a goal kick, centre forward bullies the defender, brings it down and smashes it in the top corner. That’s teamwork and you want the whole team to get a bonus? Clearly never played the game in the your life 😭
@@_Super_Hans_ and a striker goes through on goal, the centre back catches him up and puts huge pressure on him sending him wide of the goal. The striker then hits a weak shot because of the pressure from the defender and the goalkeeper saves it. In your view that save is completely the goalkeepers achievement?
254k veiws in a week with 22.5 subs is massive 👏👏👏🔥👏⚽
"Fulfilling your role bonus" hahaha sounds like every job bonus I've ever had, some weird algorithm that no one understands and is basically what your boss says you are going to get
Does Crouchy Always wear his watch half way up his arm lol
Skinny arms ,big problem
clean sheet bonus for keepers? and center backs? does this happen? championship manager has me ruined :P
That guy speaking sounds like the dude from radio 1 with scott mills
Damn! Was looking forward to frauding crouchy. Guess I'll return my stilts I bought back from the shop first thing in the morning and the long trench coat too!
I feel like bonuses for non-striker positions should be based on %'s not number of tackles or passes etc, like % of successful tackles or progressive passes or crosses but like you have to have completed like a certain number to activate so you cant just do 1 successful cross and not go for another like yoy have to hit at least 10 and if you have 50% of crosses connectin you get your bonus
Last ditch tackle bonus? That's familiar. My misses said that when she met me. Said I was the last guy left in the club that night. 😉💯💪
could actually listen to crouchy all day
How many actual sweet times did you need to be told that clean sheet bonus for defenders = goal bonus for attackers Putting the ball in the net is the hardest part of the game and will always reap the greatest rewards
Pretty sure scoring a penalty is easier than preventing the other team from scoring for 90 minutes....
@@1physics same logic applies… ignoring 2 strikers. You have 9 other people helping you keep a clean sheet. A defender can keep a clean sheet without making a tackle or blocking a shot. How do you know a team hasn’t kept a clean sheet because the other team were passed off the park for 90 minutes.
For a 'jump off point here' I'd like to see Crouchy explain more about player relationships with the stats guys employed by the club.
Contracts for defenders are swung more in favour of appearance bonuses than it is for forwards.
That watch being near Crouch's elbow is bothering me
Why is there a printer in the pub?
Good on crouchy
Just yesterday I was about to google about player contracts and what they look like and this morning on youtube I see this.
Imagine the contracts now days
Not enough details.
Bonuses are redundant. The only way it works is if the base salary is reduced to a nub and then the player earns their salary on a game-by-game basis. Obviously, this doesn't work as it is a function of how many games you play. If you don't play, you don't get paid. Players are paid so much that they should have deductions instead of bonuses for not fulfilling certain strategic goals.
Yeah nobody is signing that contact.
@@VillaBoys123 The economics of the game are now unsustainable. I think one division's worth of teams will disappear in the next 10-15 years.
What is the bonus for the defender ? Crouchy: Being there Top lad😂
Bonuses for XG's ..... never .... player like Adama Traore would be raking in huge bonuses without ever scoring.
Can someone tell me why that other bloke was replaced with this dave fella?
Tom Fordyce left for family reasons, not much more info other than this. He did feature in the first podcast of the new series however, which was a nice little send off for him.
I'm going to Turkey Monday. I'm going to go to as many Internet cafes as possible, put this podcast on KZhead and leave #PassThePod

😎😏
The best bonus would be simply a team win bonus. Keeps it simple
last ditch tackle bonus should be enforced by UEFA and FIFA for fun 🤣
surely "fulfilling a tactical role" is the basis of being a footballer, thus negating the need for a bonus?
What a ledge crouch is
I’m rocking my Chelsea jumper when I sign 🤣
