The Fisker Ocean was the worst car I've ever reviewed. Can the 2.0 software redeem it?

So unfortunately they're rolling out the .0 update in stages by sending technicians around to cars to update them. But that's fixed with 2.0" Source: The Fisker employee in the parking lot while dropping off the car

    • That's bad comms on Fisker's part for sure. Either the employee was mistaken, or perhaps they were talking about the very earliest Oceans (the One model, a small minority of the inventory Fisker has today). Might be worth updating this pin to clarify that this is not actually true for most Oceans, at least according to the testimony of the comments in this thread and on Reddit (where many folks are getting OTA 2.0)

  • It's a shame that this company died due to bad software. Hopefully other companies will take notice of how important the UI/UX is for _all_ modern technologies, and not just adopt the "We'll fix it later" mentality; the first impression is the *ONLY* impression.

    • Fisker is not dying because of their software. It’s dying because Fisker never set up a proper delivery network in the US and support system for their vehicles. Crappy software can easily be improved but not delivery and customer/technician support.

    • UI/UX is important but proper dev pipeline and product management can always provide a path forward. You 100% can start with a basic UI/UX (very common) that isn’t perfect and evolve over time without losing users, and in fact having them love the product (and company) more over time. There are likely many other reasons it died, like cash flow, vision, management, engineering, etc…

None of the critical operational stuff was set up properly from the beginning, as evidenced by the fact that they couldn't even collect car payments properly which is unheard of in the car business.

  • I'm a heartbroken Fisker Ocean Extreme owner and I agree with almost everything in this review. I also mostly agree with the previous one and I really don't want to. Also if Marques had spent more time with the car he would have found so many more UX issues. 1. My Ocean Extreme did receive its 2.0 Update over the air. It required me to manually accept it and consciously unplug and lock the vehicle while it updated. Note: A Fisker engineer did come to look at it after the update for other issues I'd reported. IIRC there was also conversation about updating the key fob... 2. You can manually push the button on the left side of the steering wheel to turn the parking brake off even if your seatbelt is not on ⚠ - If you are stopped at a light and you shift too much in your seat, the car shifts into P and unlocks the doors. ⚠ - If you open the driver side door it shifts into park and unlock the other doors. 3. Bluetooth/Audio still has reliability bugs. 4. I still lose 4G connection for multiple hours in a downtown area. When I do, both clocks on the vehicle's screen get out of sync and are both wrong (minutes are always accurate though.🤔) ⚠ - What happens to the 4G connection if Fisker goes out of business? 5. It now supports multiple profiles but the profiles in the car don't seem to store much besides A/C settings 😞 6. Spending engineering resources on a screen that only rotates when I'm in park and on fancy things like California mode was not the best move considering the state of the core experiences in the car's software. 7. I did get locked in the car multiple times as did my wife. Hasn't happened since 2.0 update I've said it before, the single most concerning thing for me was the promise of a "2.0" update to fix all the problems. Who even cares about version numbers today? How many folks know what version number of Chrome they are running? Nobody even notices when Chrome updates. IMHO celebrating numeric releases of software today is an anti-pattern. Continuous delivery, feature-flighting, A/B experimentation, these are not things you can easily build in after the fact. Shipping without all of them was a mistake and has impacted their engineering agility. I'm a software guy at heart so I'm biased but I think one of the best moves Fisker could make would be to create a non-profit foundation to own and drive forward their vehicle OS stack by making it open source and leveraging the community of enthusiasts. Take 24 vehicles and give 2 a month to community voted top contributors over the next year. This would also bolster confidence for new buyers in the event of dissolution. If the Ocean could become an autonomous vehicle dev kit for companies like Wayve and it's competitors perhaps they could even move more inventory.

A disaster given that the company was selling pretty much internationally. The owner decided to own the mistake and sent out technicians to fix and replace all the hinges, almost bankrupting the company in the process. But it passed. And because of that experience, he vowed to focus on quality and design, aiming to be the best. Years later, the company is now the leading cabinet hardware and hinge manufacturer worldwide, known for its quality! Good for Fisker for owning it and trying. Hoping it works out for them.

Unfortunately they really tried to over-deliver on the tech. If they had stopped at good looks and build quality, used android auto and CarPlay, and kept it affordable, they would have had a genuinely compelling product. But instead they messed with solar panels, custom software, and new safety features. It’s honestly such a shame and is a direct result of salespeople getting their way instead of engineers.

But I agree, I’m a developer and sometimes bugs can slip through so it’s a little crazy (and in this case bugs can be deadly versus a site shutting down).

      @catbert7@catbert7Ай бұрын
    • @@antoinkiely7972 Advanced software is not inherent to EVs; EVs are just newer and copying Tesla, which included a lot of modern tech into their cars (something the car industry has been decades behind on). And, no, they definitely don't have too much software. Other cars do not have enough. I have had almost no issues with my Tesla and the few I've had were very minor; far less than the avg car. What I do have is 100x more features, many of which I absolutely love; others I only like ;p And there was definitely a problem with the manual controls we were all using - there were way too many of them and they required looking away from the road. That's why Tesla moved the core controls to 2 contextual scroll-wheel buttons on the wheel, and to voice controls. Much safer, much cleaner.

      @catbert7@catbert7Ай бұрын
    • @dardanm3544 That's probably my other gripe more generally. The average person doesn't want or need any of the "features" they keep touting with most modern cars in general, yet most carmakers are pushing these features anyway (both EV and ICE). Most of the features now don't even have anything to do with driving. Why does a modern car have video games or internet browsing built in now? That's why people are still buying Toyota 4Runners which has been in production since 2010 mostly unchanged, even at insane markups, because it's simple, reliable, and doesn't require people to search google on how to use X, Y and Z. Even the Mitsubishi Mirage, plenty of people buy those because they are simple transportation. That's what's disappeared over the past decade is simple, distraction-free, not-tied-to-some-server-farm-owned-by-XYZ-carmaker transportation. And evidently, a lot of people have been driving their cars for more than a decade and survived without software updates, since the average age of cars on the road is 12.5 years, and I'm sure plenty a lot older than that.

  • December 2011, Fisker Automotive recalled the first 239 Karmas delivered to the U.S. due to a risk of battery fire caused by coolant leak. Of the 239 cars, less than fifty had been delivered to customers, the rest were in dealerships. In the report filed by Fisker Automotive with the NHTSA, the carmaker said some hose clamps were not properly positioned, which could allow a coolant leak and an electrical short could possibly occur if coolant enters the battery compartment, causing a thermal event within the battery, including a possible fire. In May 2012 a Fisker Karma was involved in a home fire that also burnt two other cars in Fort Bend County, Texas. The chief fire investigator said the Karma was the origin of the fire that spread to the house, but the exact cause is still unknown

  • I've had my Ocean One since December. It came with software ver 1.10, which got updated to 1.11 a few weeks later and then 2.0 was pushed last week. Both updates were OTA and didn't require any tech to visit/install. Is the software complete? No. Is it better than the older version? Absolutely. The car drives and handles really well and it shows in the build quality. As a One owner, I am realistic about the murky future of this company and have mentally prepared myself for this car possibly turning into an expensive brick at some point in the future. All I can hope is that they are around long enough to push the next few set of updates to make this a more "complete" car. My biggest concern is with lack of support if the company goes under and there are no service or repair options in case of a fender-bender or a cracked windshield. So while I love my Ocean and think it could become a great car someday if the company survives long enough, I can't recommend anyone to buy this car until the company's future is clearer.

  • In fairness to Fisker, the parking brake feature is more common than you'd think. From personal experience, Toyotas and Hyundais with automatic parking brakes will not disengage them automatically without your seat belt being on, as is the case with other cars I would imagine. On those models, you can override it by manually pushing the parking brake button. I do not know if Fisker included such a button.

  • I can relate to the long bootup -- I put a wireless carplay adapter in my B9 A4 -- and it sometimes takes about a minute to connect. But there's also an occasional Audi MMI bug where the car gets confused after ignition and that sometimes means the rear view camera doesn't come on when you put it in reverse. And a pre-existing carplay bug where it just won't play a track/station/song -- across all apps -- I think it's related to Apple's "now playing" feature, but I've put up with it for years. However, sometimes the "fix" is just to change channel or track -- but sometimes you have to do an MMI full reset -- so it takes a minute too.

I pray nobody decides to use the under-seat storage for standard glove-compartment fare…hopefully that half-visor is stronger than it looks and can pick up some of the slack for handling routine traffic stops 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • I checked out the Ocean and inside felt it was a little too small. I didn't drive it but the materials felt nice. I did this while owning a 2021 ID.4. That car was my worst car experience. It had a lot of the same issues you found with the Ocean but with a much larger and mature car company. So I can't fully knock Fisker for those same issues in my mind at least. I looked for your review of an ID.4 to see if you reviewed an early model and didn't see one. Supposedly the newer models are much better so it would be a interesting car for you to review and compare to all the other cars in the segment. With the ID.4 we had issues with the software and not over the air updating too. - It took 23 months and 29k miles before they were able to get it in to update it at a dealership to have the updated software and over the air capabilities. - Mine had some sort of sensor issue where it would give me warnings about drive aids not working and to see a dealership. But then they would go away after a few minutes. Multiple times my dealer just tells me there's nothing wrong. These warnings would come up on clear sunny days when the car was clean so nothing was blocking the sensors. - The tires installed from the manufacture were crap, possibly faulty. They came with 20" Bridgestones and they would wear way quicker then any other EV. I had to replace them at 18k miles and that's with literal chunks or rubber coming off the tires and the tread close to being too far worn. Other people only got 12k miles out of the tires. Yet people with Teslas and other EVs are getting 30k plus miles on the tires. VW did nothing about this. I replaced them with Pirellis and for the 10k miles I had the car for after that they barely wore compared to the 18k miles with the Bridgestones. - It didn't have a great regen or hold either and it mostly was updated with the software update. - My car had remote issues too. The passenger doors never unlocked on the first try. Most times it took 6 plus pushes before they finally unlocked. They had a recall for door locks and claimed they fixed it but mine never fixed and it still didn't work. - Speaking of recalls, in a little over 2 years there were 5 recalls requiring me to go to a dealer and drop it off with no curtesy car. So that's days I had to take off of work or work around driving to my nearest dealership, 45 minutes away each way to deal with this. In the end it was a shame because the car drove and handled pretty good, after the tire replacement. But I got rid of it as soon as I could and life couldn't be happier.

  • It was the same story with Henrik Fiskers last car project, the Fisker Karma. The car was beautiful, but unreliable. And the company closed down within a year. When i saw the news about the Fisker Ocean I was very tempted to order one, because the price here in Denmark was really attractive. But knowing that Henrik Fisker was the man behind it, I didnt do it. The Ocean was delayed again and again, but then they proudly annonced that they had delivered it to their first customer. It turned out that their first "customer" was actually a co-founder of Fisker. And regular customers had to wait a few months further... Even though Henrik is from Denmark, just like me, and he has designed nice cars for BMW, Ford, and Aston Martin. I will never trust a thing that man is behind

And by uncertainty i mean Fisker throwing a Hail Mary trying to get investors despite not being able to provide trustworthy financials because they literally lost $ 150M of customer payments. THAT uncertainty. I was never able to get updates but I had a hardware issue that caused other oddities. Those issues seemed unique from other owners. It was eventually fixed in late Feb (I got it in Oct) What pissed me off was the complete runaround. Everyone said it was escalated in my weekly calls to the company, trying hard not to sound scripted. Not once was I able to talk to anyone at a higher level. The ones who provided a number kept leaving. Maybe a coincidence, but it wasn’t until I started speaking up on socials did they come out. So that’s similar to what was said about coming out to update. I signed up knowing there were risks and growing pains, but didn’t sign up for hospice care.
