kerimcan ak no it’s not. racism, for lack of better explanation/words, is when you think your race is superior. so saying another race is racist has little to do with your own races’ superiority.
For those blasting that guy for just straight up saying the N word - the average Korean won’t have the concept of the wording “the N word” because that’ term (eg the F word, the C word, etc.) is purely English. There’s no alternative. Yes, he is aware that it’s a bad word, but his understanding or connection to it is not the same as those who come from English speaking or non-Asian cultures. Most know now that the N word is really bad, but that’s only if they’re quite up with current/American culture, which you can’t expect EVERYONE in a non-American/Western country to be. So stop blasting him. He was just trying to explain the best way he knew how in a VERY different context to America in a homogeneous culture.
To asians, the n word holds no value as yes there exists a word but racism towards black people is rare as black people are rare, literally noone would call em that except for some boomers or smth

I actually appreciated that man for being direct and saying it. I prefer a person to be truthful to me than beating around the bush or try to spin the obvious negative word into a positive because you don't feel comfortable saying it.

In fact, There was one time a blog/video of a asian person reading racist things toward asian Americans. The asian person didn't deem it as racist. Meanwhile, the American next to her was calling out that it was racist. Its not that asian ppl can choose.. its the fact they literally don't know.. Asians should not be held at the same standard in knowledge as asian Americans.

껌둥이(ggamdoongee) on its own is actually not a bad word. ~둥이 is something that has a characteristics of cuteness. For example if you said 껌둥이 puppy, its just means a cute black puppy. But if you say that to a person, now it becomes a racial slur.

I’m glad that she explained at the end of the video if the expressions “black brother or sister” were good or bad, I was really confused because it seemed like a hurtful way to call someone, even if some said that it was ok during the video. Hi ! Everyone ! First of all, I would like to thank Jay for giving me the chance to do something like this. As a black person learning Korean, there have been numerous times where I have felt discouraged by certain words they use towards ‘us’. The amount of times I’ve heard people telling me, why would you learn their language, they don’t even like you. However, I figured it would be more meaningful to get past this and seek to educate people for the better. Finally, I got the chance to do so thanks to Jay. I hope you enjoy the video and don't think we were just trying to make people uncomfy for our own pleasure. It is an ongoing issue and in my way I tried to contribute to make a little change :) Edit (10/06/2020) I came back to read comments, cuz wow it's already been a year since we did this video. I read so many nice comments and some not so nice comments, but it was really interesting to see the reaction of people. Eventually, I will be reflecting on this video on my channel, within this month. I'll be answering questions people had about this video and several comments people left that need to be addressed. So, please be on the lookout and thank you again for watching the video. I'm still hesitating about either doing a live stream or just filming a video. 🦋

For Asian people will think about things like “good at math” “get A+” or “eat rice” - these are not negative (ok maybe “good at studying” has a hidden meaning of this person is not good at socializing and less attractive)
Junshu Liu id like to say although they sound positive they come from negative meanings. When you generalize or fetishsize a race, you dehumanize them. With the stereotype of asians being smart, it disregards the actual hard work people put in to get where they are.

I agree, but most Koreans find this concept alien. We take positive stereotype as compliment(Koreans are good at math), or if a stereotype is something shared by Koreans too we find it non-offensive(i.e Koreans are workaholics). Not saying this is right, but when a Korean blurts out an uncomfortable statement based on stereotype, it's more out of ignorance than to offend.
I see some people calling out the korean guy who said nigger. Yeah obviously it isn't okay but I think in this context it isn't horrible because she did ask for a meaning and I'm sure he was just trying to be honest by saying the word which would give her the meaning at best. It worked since we all understood what he was trying to say 🤷🏾♀️ The fact that afterwards he explained it was bad etc means he had no harmful intentions, he knows the weight of those words :) Also this video was quite interesting. It was cute that the girl teared up ♡ Her friends and her were really chill

the expresion "the truth hurts" applies here, I'd rather they be honest and he was honest and he wasn't in any way being derogatory, he simply answered her question and told her what it means, if anything ppl should respecting his honesty in such a difficult situation.

As I'm beginning to learn Korean, this video will prove to come in handy of I ever come across an unpleasant local in my future visit. I'm not confrontational but I think it's very important to know about these terms so that you don't blindly take it as a compliment or pet name.
It's just a word that means something else in Korean, but sounds like the N word to English speakers.

Except we use Nuna for everyone,not just black people. Nuna is not the same as sis, because it is an honorific, aka a form of respect. It’s been used since ancient times in Korea. In fact, it is seen as very disrespectful if you don’t call a girl who is older than you Nuna or Eonnie. The term “Black Nuna” however can be seen as disrespect, just like she explained in the video. I have never used it, and always correct my other Korean mates when they use it. The word Nuna, however has nothing to do with cultural appropriation and has a total different meaning and use than sistah.

내국인이던 외국인이던 흑인이던 백인이던 사람을 대할때나 혹은 지칭할때 단지 한 명의 사람으로서 보아주길 바랍니다. 누군가에게 편견이나 프레임이 씌워지는 순간 자칫 차별이 될 수도 있고 무례한 행동이 될 수 있다고 생각합니다.
우리나라에서 흔히쓰는 흑형, 흑누나는 존경의 의미를 가지고 쓴다고 하지만, 흑인들이 기분 나쁘면 안 쓰는게 맞다고 본다.
외국인이라는 말도 우리 나라 사람들 너무 남용하는 경향이 있어요. 다른 나라에서는 외국인이라는 단어가 긍정적인 의미를 갖고 있지 않은데 한국 사람들은 외국인 외국인 너무 많이 써서 그 말이 나쁜 어감을 가진다는 것을 잊어가는거 같아요. 일상 대화에서 그 말을 좀 그만 썼으면 좋겠어요.

As a Asian myself, I was taught that black skin are for poor people or bad people. They said it’s look ugly. Almost every Asian people want to change their skin tones. So, People will say to them like “ You skin look so white and pretty, You must be rich...etc”. I’ve had enough experience bc I have brown skin. My friends or even some of my family always wanted me use whitening products. I sometimes got called “ n-word” in my country language. I think racism in Asian are still high.

@@joaotanekosy not taught at all. It’s base on you experience every days life. When Chinese people came to live in my country very long time ago and some of them have white skinned. And we wanted to look like them cuz they are rich and I would say pretty. And of course Hollywood movies.
On old times in Western countries it was the same, rich people had clearer skin because they stay inside, while poor people worked in the field so they had darker skin tones. Nowadays is more common for average people to have clear skin tones as people work inside factories or buildings and reach people go to the beach to tan, so concept has been reversed.

Basicly people historically prefer lighter skin color bcz tanned means outside working and lower social class. At least Chinese people in general have a basicly POSITIVE view of black people for Hollywood movies and NBA. So a well mannered African American person probably feels very good when being in China if he is not poor. But being poor in develping countries is no good. In China people only care about two things: Family and money. So real African people may get more obvious discrimation against for being African (being poor). And another thing is American street culture, lets say Outgoing, in East Asia this kind of behavior would look being a ponk or a dangrous person, people will react to be stay away from such people. But in general Americans won't really learn Asian reginal cultures and being respectful, so it's like a common thing. And I once met a real African guy, he was a christan and was really well behavior and looked gentleman, he probably had a nice time when in China. This works also for Japan and South Korea. And Japanese are more shy and quite.

Most East Asians can't speak English that well as their own mother tongue is mostly used used higher education and everything like that, unlike South East and South Asian countries where English is literally NEEDED.

i'm korean and i think it was a very precious opportunity to think of the word 흑누나 or 흑형 deeply. '누나' and '형' mean 'older sister' and 'older brother'. since we have a culture that repect older people, 'older' sometimes means 'the better'. and '흑' literally means 'black' or 'dark' but also it complies other meaning like 'outstanding' 'cool' 'exellent'. so when we say 흑누나 and 흑형, it's never a negative way of whatever.. it's positive as Donna said 08:09. but ofcourse we don't think it's appropreate to say that to 'black peple' as we also don't want to be called 'yellow' whether it's used in a good way or whatever. i just want to say it's a term represneting a group of people. a term that we use when we talk about the group.. In the video, Donna ask if there is a term for the white people like 백형 or 백누나. we can use that word too, but it's just that only 'black people' have univercial agreement in some significant area. athletic, singing, the cXXX size...?? etc.. and the word '깜xx', sorry about that..that word is from far back in the past.. i don't know when.. but we all know that the word should not be spoken out. so if anyone say that word to black people...we think it's a serious 'violence' , somthing that should not happen to anybody. I just hope that all people in world be nice to each other and help each other. Be a good friend.
