Restoration of a Very Rusty Knife with a Very Black Handle!
Today I have the third of the four knives that I bought at auction on my desktop.
For this knife, I chose a block of very black stabilized wood!
Recovery process:
Rust was removed from metal by electrolysis. Electrolyte made from soda and water. I set the current to 5-7 Amperes, and left it like that until the morning!
Then I just had to wash off the dark coating.
This knife had a rather unusual handle, and I had to divide a block of wood into four parts.
Then I glued everything together using epoxy glue. After the glue had dried, I processed the handle on a grinding wheel, and then a lot of work with a rasp and a file.
In the end, I cleaned the handle with sandpaper, I used from 240 to 2000 grit. Then covered with Kornauba wax and polished with a felt wheel.
I really liked the result, I hope you do too.
There are many more cool and interesting videos on the channel, I will be grateful if you watch some of them!
Good luck to you all and take care of yourself!
See you next week!
Best regards Max!

BEAUTIFUL !!
Nice job on the handle. I would have liked to see you do more to the blade beside just get the rust off.
Thank you! I polished the cutting edge of the blade a little more, I just didn't show it on the video.
I agree. I was disappointed that he did not restore the blade.
@@mase7557 Not much you can do its pitted if you take that down till its gone it will be very thin blade just making it weaker than it is already
@@hemidart7 Thank you for the information.
Beadblasting it and then repolishing helps make it look cleaner. You will still have dimples but not black pits
this knife would be my choice during a zombie apocalypse.. sweeeeet
😁😁😁
LOVE THIS!
🙌🙌🙌
Very creative background track (various bird calls). It's a very unique approach to adding sound without attracting attention. Thanks for that, along with all the rest.
Very satisfying to watch the handle go from blocks of wood to something sleek and handleable (for lack of a better word haha)
Thanks👍👍👍
Your handles are the best
Thanks!
you must live out in the woods with all the wildlife noises in the background, love it
You are right. I live in a small village (population about 100 people). and there is a lot of wildlife around me!
Awesome knife congratulations
The handle looks so much better than the blade.
When you are mixing the soda and water, start with 1/4 of the amount of water and mix to make a concentrate. Then add amount of water required. This will save a lot of time.
Well at least the handle came out and is an awesome example of good craftsmanship.
Thank you for appreciating my work👍
@@ITBR_Restoration I think if it were me I would spend a lot more time on cleaning and buffing the blade. Perhaps right now it's as good as it can get?
It will look nice when it's finished
I wasn't expecting you to keep the patina, but I do like it.
Thank you for this Video! Good Job! God Bless you!

Great job 👍 Congratulations from Belgium 🇧🇪😉
Thank you!😉 Always glad to new viewers!🙌
Gefällt mir sehr gut. Top - Arbeit .
I remember when these twin-finger guarded fighting knives were trendy. Didn't last too long as they are hopeless for anything else as a grip change was a disaster. Good job on the knife, leaving the blade as an "obvious rescue" was a good idea.
Thanks for the interesting story👍
Gr8 talented work. Love the Gaboon Ebony for the handle.
👍👍👍
Very impressive. The handle looks terrific.
Super.
Thanks!!!😉
Like for sure
👍👍👍
Looks great!! If you put tape on your clamps you don't have to worry about ripping off part of the wood when it's stuck on with the epoxy. Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thanks for the advice! I will definitely do that in the future.
Looks like the handle is made out of Wenge. A very dark, almost black wood, and very dense as well. Looks good thou. 🤘🤘
👍👍👍Thanks!
Well done. 😊

Excellent 🌪🤟🏼👏

Nice job on this , mean looking blade.

Congratulations on your work! Keep it up! A "hello" straight from Brazil.
Thanks !!! A big hello to you too!
Love your restores
👍👍👍❤
Good job restoring the knife, even though the rust looked thick.
Thanks for watching and commenting You are right, there was a lot of rust, and corrosion damaged the metal a little.
Now that’s amazing the handle is just beautiful well done your work is excellent 👍👍👍😊😊😊♥️
Thank you for watching and for your support
I'd call this a sub-hilt Bowie style. The way you fitted the new handle was very satisfying. Thanks! P.S. Why all the critics?
Thanks for support! There are a lot of shells on the blade, and it is really impossible to polish it!
👍
Beautiful job, Max.
😎😎😎 Thanks!😁
Amazing Great Video
😉😉👍👍
Next time put one half the handle on, allow the glue to dry, drill your holes, then repeat with the other half. Eliminates clamps sticking to the excess glue and makes certain your pin holes are aligned. I find it much easier. Nice work shaping the handle - looks good
Thanks for the advice😉
Wow! What a fantastic restoration on this knife. I think that the blade and handle look fabulous. I really enjoy watching your videos. Can't wait until the next one.😀 Be safe

Amazing as always I am getting kinda worried as I've started loving knives recently lol
Thank you! What's the cause for concern?
@@ITBR_Restoration well it's more my husband really as I want to buy a lot of them and he's not impressed by them lol especially as I sleep walk I think he's nervous by it.
That handle is beautiful!! Great restoration and craftsmanship 👍👏
Thank you for watching and commenting.👍👍👍
excellent
Thanks for the support!
I would have heat treated the blade against corrosion and maybe hardened the blade also. Otherwise a very beautiful restoration, an Excellent choice of wood too. Congratulations.
Thanks, I'd love to hear your opinion!
100%
Bravi buon lavoro. Peccato per la lama.
Grazie. Davvero molto dispiaciuto.
Always be careful when using electrolysis on unknown metals, stainless steel will give off a very toxic gas and the liquid left afterwards is also very toxic. use electrolysis in a well ventilated area and dispose of the liquid with great care, don't throw it on soil you may one day wish to grow vegetables in. 😉 stay safe and have fun.
Thank you for the warning!🙌🙌🙌 I always safely dispose of electrolysis water.
I do very limited restoration or repair and have never used electrolysis. Can you tell me how you do dispose of it? Perhaps explaining how you guys dispose of restoration in general would be a good series of videos? I’m sure I throw things in our bin that perhaps I should be taking to our council recycling plant. Thanks fellas. Edit for spelling and subbed, Ian
@@bugler75 If you are using electrolysis on normal steel/iron then the byproduct is little more than rusty, salty water, the problem only really come when you use the process on stainless steel which produces Hexavalent chromium, which is nasty stuff. I'm not sure exactly how you would dispose of it because I have never made any, the only time I had to remove rust from stainless I used a chemical rust remover. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexavalent_chromium
@@JohnSmith-ki2eq Thanks John for that. Now that you pointed it out the first example is so logical! Is no idea about the other but as you say we can use a chemical remover. I’m normally at the level of reworking or rewiring Boer War WW1 and 2 articles. Maybe it’s time for me to go big! Thanks again, Ian
That knife does look evil as well as [CENSORED] dope!
Just asking but I'm curious why you wouldn't use media blasting (sand or walnut) to clean the metal first? I also would have liked to have seen more of the finished product you could have added a full minute of stills of your work.
Super
Thanks for support!
It is interesting how the blade and handle fits together. It is and is not "full tang".
😉👍👍👍
Looks like a Randall sub Hilt fighting knife.
Another brilliant restoration end product is a beauty. However I did notice that there was some differences in the makeup of the blade handle? Although it was one piece it seemed to have a cut out piece or should I say a line cut out. If you understand what I'm on about lol 😆. Can you please explain what it's purpose is please cheers Aaron
I'm sorry, perhaps because of the difficulty of translation, I can not understand what differences you are talking about. Could you be more specific about this (possibly using time codes)
@@ITBR_Restoration there appears to be a cut out in the tang
@@bretttaylor6927 its what's known as a partial tang usually a cheaper option for knives but some expensive knives use them as well
@@marillionman8811 thank you for your help in getting my question across 👍🏻 and also answering it cheers 🍻

Salut, ...
👍👍👍
😉😉😉
Gee, 9 parts water, one part molasses in a plastic sealing container, week or so, that rust would be gone. Just did an 8 inch cast iron fry pan that was in a garage for 15 years. Took less than a week. Just tie some mono fishing line on so you can grab it, to pull out for inspection. If not finished, drop it back it. Big rust can take a few weeks. Use a rough kitchen sponge to get rid of any of the residue of the molasses reaction on the rust, kind of a wet powder. When done, wash off, and lighty oil or rust will very quickly start.
👍👍👍
This may be a stupid question, but couldnt you get more of the pitting and discoloration off of the blade?

Maybe a little sandblasting of the blade?
Thanks, I'll work on it.
Why didn't you drill the lanyard hole? Are brass tubes too expensive?
Man the tang being 2 pieces and just tack welded together is scary.
Maybe you are right. But that was the intention of the manufacturer.
Why no Wire Wheel on the blade?
Do I have to sand by hand down they have machines to sand and polish in 2022????
Nice job but I feel you could have showed the blade I little more love
Thank you! This blade has very deep shells. And I was afraid to grind them, because then the blade would become very thin.
great job ob the handle, but the blade needs a lot more work
