Aquatic Affection: How a Scuba Diver Found a Good Friend Under the Sea

2017 ж. 13 Мау.
4 074 534 Рет қаралды

Scuba diver Hiroyuki Arakawa and Yoriko are the unlikeliest of friends. While they both share a love for the sea, Yoriko's gills and tail make her a little more aquatically inclined. Nearly every day for the past 25 years, Arakawa has been diving into the waters of Hasama Underwater Park in Tateyama, Japan, to visit Yoriko-an Asian sheepshead wrasse. One day, Arakawa found her looking exhausted and carrying an injury. So he did what any friend would do: he took care of Yoriko, feeding her crabs and nursing her back to health. Their decades-long friendship is proof there's no greater bond than the one between man and fish.

One day, he won't be around, and the fish will still be in the area, waiting for her best friend to come back so they can swim together just like the old days. And she will never understand why her savior doesn't come and visit her anymore.

  • I had a similar experience off the coast of Nassau, in the Bahamas. I was on a live-aboard for a week, accompanied by a large group of friends and an incredible crew. One of the dives I did was a shark dive on a wreck. This involved everyone submerging to around 60 feet and holding onto the rail of the sunken ship in a large semicircle, then a member of the crew would swim down with a massive icicle of Chum, attracting hundreds of fish and dozens of sharks. While we were waiting, a juvenile Nassau Grouper, approximately 8 inches long, greeted the captain in the center of the circle by swimming up to him and touching nose to nose, after some petting from the captain, he began to make his rounds throughout the group. He started on one side of the semicircle and swam by everybody 1 by 1, allowing everyone to pet him. While I don't have video of the interaction between the captain and the grouper, I have video of him swimming around the group and I have video of me petting it.

  • It is not said enough, but to be prejudice is to burn bridges before they are even built. When you realize life and your place in it, you open up the door to seeing beauty that doesn't rely on aesthetics. It's interaction and trust that makes it truly beautiful. This has reminded me of that. Thank you so much

  • It's hard to explain to someone that hasn't spent any time underwater. It's amazing. As soon as you submerge your stress melts away. Nobody is around to bother you. All you hear are the bubbles you exhale from your regulator and the sounds fish make, rocks falling, etc.
