Bears in the Modern World - Electric Deer

2014 ж. 11 Қыр.

A Montana grizzly bear attempts to retrieve an electrically charged, road-killed deer. The deer is electrified as an experiment to protect hunters’ game kills and, in turn, to minimize bear-human encounters.

  • 1:08 This is fascinating to me because the bear is just lying there, possibly for hours, just pondering the situation and how he can solve the problem. It’s like he’s thinking “What’s different here” and then sees the battery and wonders if he removes that if anything will change. *Very intelligent animal.*

    • Very intelligent and the way he tests the carcass to see if the shock has disappeared after he knocks the battery down is just wow. This for me is equivalent to a person that doesn't like maths solving a very difficult sum

  • The third time, after he disconnected the battery, the way he was checking to see if it was gonna shock him reminded me of how I used to be as a kid after I’d unhooked the power to the electric fence.😂 Even though I knew FOR A FACT that it had zero power going to it, I still had to barely touch it and yank my hand back really fast bout eleventeen times before I crossed it…you know, just to make sure.😆😂🤣

    • Personification and anthropomorphizing… the bear is expecting the shock. After two electric shocks that got its attention the third time something changed and it’s being cautious. Once it’s convinced it’s not going to get another shock it tears the deer down. It doesn’t know what electricity is or that it’s been shocked just that biting that deer previously resulted in an unpleasant physical sensation. Predators are observant and have a good memory, their instincts are to become cautious when something doesn’t react the way the bear expects

Difficult for either one of us to say I suppose, but I don't think it's "clearly" one way or the other. However, to me, it looks deliberate. It does not look to me like the battery just happened to accidently fall over, or that standing on it just happened to accidently knock it over. To me, it looks like he pulled it over with both front paws on purpose, just like bears do with rocks and logs. Of course, I'm not saying that he had figured out the physics of electricity (LOL) but I do think he figured he try ripping up that human-gear and see what happened.

    • @@danishdutchdeadly1198 I think it's fair to say that the bear accidentally stepped on and turned off the power. Had the generator been a few feet above the ground, I think it might not have "solved" the problem. I don't know. However, it was evident that there was some level of reasoning going on. It seemed to understand that something was providing power to the carcass. It tested out by trial and error by touching its surroundings and, finally, the carcass with its paws. Given that bears are not equally as intelligent as human beings, what that bear did, intentional or accidental, was still impressive.
