Tsar Alexander III | Biographical Glance
Alexander III was the epitome of what a Russian Tsar was supposed to be. Forceful, formidable, fiercely patriotic. He was the embodiment of the fabled Russian bear. He came to power at a critical point in Imperial Russian history. The Industrial Revolution had finally come to Russia and capitalism was taking root. Foreign investment within the country was at an all-time high.

I always wondered why the western world docs criticize Alexander 3 and Nicholas 1 they were “reactionary “ or more conservative Czars, but their reigns were actually the 2 most stable in Russia’s history! I love this video so much please make more. Thank you for the non biased view on Alexander the 3 it’s a rarity these days !
There was one exception during Nicholas reign and the was at the beginning of his reign when a part of the Russian army rebelled and he had to put the rebellion down
@@lucasbishop8437 yeah the Decemberist Revolt I forgot about that one. They have a great documentary in Russian (but it has subs in English ) I think Star Media might even have made it on the Decemberist Revolt

I feel bad for Nicholas. Following a giant like his father. Forceful, intimidating, strong and a literal giant who dies too soon, and then here comes Nicky. Short, kind, not forceful or intimidating at all. Complete opposites. And then trying to live up to that legacy.
Add to that a German-English wife who interferes in politics and you have a recipe for disaster.
Nicholas II didn’t need to follow in his father’s footsteps he proved himself to be a great ruler in his own way. He didn’t need to be his father to reign all he had to be was himself to rule his empire. Also Alexander III was a kind natured and gentle man too just not with his enemies.
Rick Jones Alexandra had no political power and she let her mother in law do that job. She only gave some advice which Nicholas II ignored. Your misjudging Alexandra and not knowing who she really is.
Esperance Fe indeed Nicholas II was one of the best rulers The Russian Empire ever had he didn’t thrive longer because of disloyal usurpers and double crossers wanting to tear down Russian society and culture. Decent human beings and good men ( and people) make amazing leaders the only problem is there’s people out there planning to ruin all the hard work they do. Maximilian I, Faisal II, Mary I, Wilhelm II, Shah Mohammad, George III and so many other European monarchs who were good men didn’t stay in power for long which is a shame as they didn’t deserve to be dethroned nor removed from power in any. Also Nicholas II was very aware of who the Revolutionaries were. ( they did kill his grandfather another good men who did things out of the goodness of his heart with the thanks he gets was being killed by terrorists). He did his best to suppress them the only reason why they were still around was his humanity.
Esperance Fe agreed she was in truth a wonderful woman unfairly judged and scapegoated because of her heritage ( and still wrongly judged in the 21 century today). She adored her fellow Russians and done good deeds for them which they were ungrateful for and used them to slander her. How Western Media portrays her is hogwash she was nothing like how they wrongly portray her.
Tsar Alexander III may have been quite conservative (some accuse him of being a reactionary, but his father had been assassinated by terrorists, so one can understand). Even so, he was a visionary and understood that if Holy Russia was to move forward, it was going to have to form strategic economic alliances. Russia's march toward industrialization and the 20th century was championed and encouraged by Tsar Alexander III. He was no-nonsense Tsar and he is still honoured in Russia to this day.
Alexander III was quite anti-war. He experienced the horrors of the battlefield during Russo-Turkish War in 1878. He was wise to avoid external conflicts. His father, Alexander II, had ended the Crimean War that Nicholas I entered. Western critics do not understand that a transformation from a largely agrarian bi- continental multi-ethnic empire ruled by an iron hand to a modern democratic constitutional order is no easy task. It would have taken many decades of peace and prosperity to achieve. That was never in the cards.
You speak the truth friend. While Alexander III was a conversative reactionary he had no problems with change it was change to would ruin Russia and ran it to the ground that he had a problem with. Alex III was no tyrant nor a bully as being an autocrat is a sacred role than a way to lord over others nor an excuse to let power go to the head. He used his power to protect his people and help with Russia’s growth as a country. Tsar Alexander III had a heart as big as him and was a fair, good natured and benevolent ruler who reigned with compassion and love. He treated not just his people fairly but also citizens all throughout his empire religious or other ethnicity ( he wasn’t responsible for any of the programs I his empire neither did Nicholas I). While he did suppress people he only superseded those who deserved it double crossing violent and dangerous revolutionaries who had no qualms sinking to low levels in having Russia under their thumb. People make false accusations of him not wanting Russia to change when in reality he was willing for his nation to progress as along as it doesn’t doom Russia.
Rick Jones very much true he did make his armed forces more powerful he did so pacifistically with no bloodshed. Although he wanted his empire to have more influence he didn’t want to start violent battles he saw what they can do. Nicholas II definitely got it from him wanting to make sure both ears he fought in were avoided ( like father like son). Not to mention finding the right person for the Duma who were good individuals which was also really hard to do ( it’s a miracle that Nicholas II managed to get some only for them to die so soon). As well as brutal and sanctimonious revolutionaries ( aka anarchists, terrorists and felons) slaughtering capable members of The Duma. Nicholas II may not of liked the idea of his empire having a Duma he was willing to give it a try so that his empire and country can advance and progress with him only shutting it down when it’s members are doing nothing to help it’s country and care more about themselves than their empire. Nicholas II had every reason to close down the Duma they wanted time asking for personal gain than thinking of ways to benefit their people and it was a problem Nicholas had to deal with. Nicholas II wasn’t to blame for the Duma being ineffective when it’s clear that The Duma were at fault for being no help at all Nicholas II did his best to make life better for his people with The Duma but put their own desires above the needs of their fellow Russians. It was a good thing that Stolypin was actually a decent and good man who wanted to help improve his empire ( Nicholas made the right choice making him his prime minister but it’s a shame that he was killed by a bloodthirsty anarchist).
Он правил на пике могущества Российской Империи. Без его согласия не могла стрелять ни одна пушка в Европе. На тот момент он был властелином мира!
This was one of the tragedies of the Russian Monarchy. History is filled with what ifs. Under Alexander III’s reign Revolution would had been more complicated to occur.
Narodnaya volja was the pre bolshevik movement that didnt gave up, just as we today understand that Soros from Open society sponsor BLM among other movements like extinction rebellion, it was also wealthy sources behind these then movements sponsoring them. A3 had like 8 attempts. Lenins older brother got hanged for being behind the coup against his father.

Oh yes indeed !
Fascinating informative and insightful Video Alexander III
While the west likes to criticize him, obviously because he was so "anti-western", I think he was the kind of Zar that Russia needed. I feel like the western style of liberalism and progressivity doesn't work with Russia. The last time it did was with Peter I but not anymore. The most recent attempt was after the downfall of the soviet union, but it only made everything worse. What they really need is a strong, competent leader that truly loves his country and is sceptical with the west.
History is blessed with perfect hindsight, so true.
If only we had that in mind when judging people of the past!
thanks for another really interesting video! i'd heard a little about tzar alexander III - that he could barge through doors without opening them, that he would sometimes tie his cutlery in knots at the dinner-table and that he could take a pack of playing-cards and tear it in half with his bare hands - but i didn't know much about him really, especially about his own childhood. so you've taught me a little, so thank you.
It's really just a biographical glance, as the title has it. Hopefully in the future we could make something more detailed, but for now we thought of introducing a few members of the Romanov family in a summarized style. Thanks for watching!
Haha why would he tie his knots at the table?
I am sure if he lived today most likely he would dedicate himself to powerlifting!
Tsar Alexander III was a successful ruler. Had his son and successor been a more competent monarch and had World War I been avoided, the Russian Revolution would not have occurred.

Hi there, Terry! Thanks for watching our video! We'd like to inform you that there was an error in the script at the point where the narrator said that Alexander was the first child of Alexander III and Marie. Young Alexander was born in 1969, after Nicholas. So, Nicholas was actually the first-born son and Alexander came (and died) after Nicholas was born. Sorry about that!
@@RomanovRoyalMartyrs No worries! It's all good!😁

Thank you for this very informative and enlightening video. Since I started reading your book, I learned so much about Russia's imperial family. I realized that behind all the pomp and grandeur, Czar Nicholas II and his family were also like ordinary people, who wanted to keep their families together, safe and happy...Also I cannot help but notice how Czar Nicholas II looked very much like his father, and how Grand Duchess Maria very closely resembled her grandmother. The family resemblance fascinates me greatly...Again, maraming salamat.
Thank you so much for your kind words and your positive feedback!
Irrespective of his reign (there is no way for me to reconcile his anti-semitism) he had a very touching relationship with Maria Feodorovna. Pushed together by a deathbed promise, many people describe their marriage as "relatively happy" but it was more than that. They passionately adored one another and Minnie was absolutely devastated when he died. One only has to read their letters to understand the depth of their devotion.
And Alexander III took no mistresses. In fact, he was repulsed by the idea. If Alexander had lovers was before meeting Dagmar.
I know what you're talking about. I am a Romanov devotee but I am also a Zionist (they ARE God's chosen people) and believe that the pogroms of 1905 were one of the reasons Nicholas lost the throne. Reconciling the two, for me, is difficult... Alexander's relationship with the Jews was... complex, I'd say. On the one hand, he drove all the Jews out of Moscow but on the other, he also put a stop to the pogroms. When Sergei Witte- the father of the Trans-Siberian Railway and Alexander's favourite minister- married a Jew and was nearly forced to resign by the court, Alexander kept Witte on because he liked him so much. I think he was different to his son in that, although he believed the Jews to be everything wrong with society, he was far more tolerant and believed in keeping the peace.
My favorite Tsar, a man's man. Makes me wonder if he would have gotten along with Theodore Roosevelt, if he had lived.

Alexander III got Lenin's brother hanged, Nicholas should have followed his father. Not getting Lenin killed was a big mistake. He almost single-handedly plotted the downfall of the Tsarist regime, and the brutal massacre.

His granddaughter Marie is a beautiful version of him.
I really can't blame Alexander for his conservative style during his reign. His father had done so much to help the people, but they still killed him anyway. To Alexander, if the people still saw his father fit to be killed when he was going to sign a constitution into law the next day, why should he even bother with it? Yes, it caused the downfall of the monarchy in the long run, but you cannot tell me that if he knew not signing it into law was going to destroy his country and arguably more importantly, his family, he still wouldn't have granted it.

Many do not understand how a great leader is formed nor what actual leadership qualities it takes to be great. We, in our arrogance, measure greatness by superficial features. With this arrogance, we cannot accurately assess what goes on in our own country, let alone in a distant land. Because we are this judgmental, we presume to believe in our own distasteful judgments and assume we deserve to confiscate and plunder what rightfully belongs to others... 💔😢

no that is a too simplistic statement tinged with uncritically accepted propaganda. what "reform" are you talking about exactly ? on what ground do you think that absence of that "reform" ( whatever that is ) "doomed the empire"? in reality russia was the fastest growing country in the world in much of the three decades before ww1.
No reform was needed for Russia in that period of time. Alexander III along with Peter the Great and French King Louis XIV are the best examples of system in which autocracy caused the modernization of the country.
@@sitting_nut Agrarian reforms and local governing bodies such as the zemstvo system first introduced by Alexander II and sponsored by Pyotr Stolypin after the revolution of 1905. His plans were on track and revolutionaries feared success would ruin the chances of a revolution. After he was killed the momentum gained was lost and unrest continued. Russia was also vastly behind on industrialization and not ready for an industrial scale war as WWI. When they started to catch up by 1916 it was too late.

It is really impossible to know whether Russia would have been convulsed into WWI had Alexander II lived another 10 years and had been able to implement his constitutional changes. It certainly would have been an improvement from what happened in the absense of reform. The crucial event in Russian history prior to 1914 was the entry of Russia into WWI. The military was not prepared and the massive amount of losses in human lives that arose from the war combined with the damage to the Russian economy was a perfect storm that created the conditions for a violent revolution. The last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, never realized that sharing power meant sharing responsibility for failure. He had been schooled that absolutism was next to "godliness" . He did not realize that governance must change with the times. The central problem with absolutism is its dependence on the ability of one man to make correct decisions nearly 99% of the time. That is beyond the capabilities of anyone. That was especially true at the end of the 19th century. The tragedy of Russian history has always been lost opportunities. I fear that we are witnessing that same tragedy again.
Nicholas II had no intentions nor desire for war and tried avoiding it the best he could. The French Government and the warhawks in his army kept pushing him for war he even ordered a partial mobilization which was dismissed by the officials. Also I’m pretty sure that Nicholas saw being an autocrat was a sacred duty and that he never absolutism as next to godliness. Nicholas was reluctant in going to war and only did so out of noble goal of protecting a weaker neighbor twice. Heck both time he was close to winning both wars of only outside forces didn’t intervene. Also he didn’t have any problems with reforms and was willing for changes to be made to his country ( as long as they didn’t harm Russia).
