  • The overtaking boat has the duty of care to the smaller slower boat and is liable for any damage resulting from his wake. I would cite the larger boat for reckless driving.

    • The bay liner was at fault. You don’t just drive all over the place in an inlet which is considered a confined area of operation- what if the yacht was “constrained by draft and couldn’t leave the narrow channel. Maybe leave the back seat boat operation to someone who actually knows the rules of the road. That inlet is just like a highway and that old fart was in the left lane and turned right into the side of the yacht. The idiot in the sea Ray would’ve been charged

      @StevenMiller-cx4rr@StevenMiller-cx4rr8 ай бұрын

    • Reminds me of the Prowler in San Diego. Dumbass captain on a yacht pulls out of San Diego Harbor at like 28 knots and puts it on auto pilot. Ends up running over a sportfishing boat killing several people and destroying one of the most storied boats in the San Diego Sportfishing Fleet. Looking at the GPS data you can clearly see when the collision occurred. The yacht deflected its course a little bit... bot no changes in heading or speed occurred until several minutes after the crash. Nobody was at the helm.

  • The Bayliner seemed mighty small compared to that beast of a yacht and the waves at haulover. Truly a close pass and should have been avoided by that yachtster. My 21' occasionally gets the big plowing wake from a big cruiser on our inland lakes. That was definitely too close for my comfort.

  • Couple of observations- one, the skipper of the Bayliner was not paying attention to the flow of traffic by not maintaining exit speed and the bigger boat basically went around him, although a bit close. Then the Bayliner slowed to a crawl, still in the lane, and decided to turn around...in the lane. Then he made a turn without making sure he was clear of traffic and proceeded back into the inlet IN THE OUTGOING LANE! Idiot captain.

    • The bayliner clearly had trouble (maybe captains fault, maybe technical, maybe whatever...). Pulling a maneuver like this is uncalled for. Wait a few minutes and go out then. The big boat was in no trouble and didn't have to go right then. That bayliner captain could have made another mistake (besides being on a boat to begin with) and there could have been a collision ruining everyones day over a few minutes.

    • The larger boat was at fault, and luckily avoided a serious incident. The overtaking vessel has the responsibility to give way, and overtake safely. They in no way, did that. They were traveling too fast and you close for safe margins. Ideally, the Bayliner would have maintained a straight heading, but they didn't do anything outrageous, leading up the the near catastrophy. Anyone who says the overtaking boat wasn't seriously at fault, and operating dangerously, doesn't know the rules of the road (sea).

Your job is to look at the other boats and see their speed and adjust your course accordingly not swamp them because you are to important to wait for them to clear or just match their speed which would have been no problem for a boat that size to handle. • Smaller boat needs to understand where he’s at. He’s in a turbulent inlet with all kinds of different boats coming in and out. If you can’t hold it straight and get through it, you should not be in it. The bigger boat needs to have substantial forward movement For good course direction through turbulent water. This problem could’ve been avoided if the captain was able to read tides. Smaller boats should go in and out on neutral tide.

His performance upon making the decision to turn around was idiotic to say the least. Not a guy you'd willingly hop on his boat to venture out into deep water for sure.

  • Bigger/faster boat overtaking on the right (wrong), overtaking boat has to take care, BUT stand on vessel must maintain course/speed, BUT the boats are responsible for the wake and smaller boat turned in to take the wake on the bow (correct action). Overall 70% bigger boast fault, 30% smaller boat fault. If there was any damage, 100% bigger boat's insurance would pay.

  • Looks like the 'real' captain handed over to one of the passengers for a few seconds, (0:16 - 0:36), just prior to the yacht passing them so that he could attend to the windshield. The Bayliner also slows as can be seen from the reduced wake. When the deputy skipper sees the yacht, he seems to initially turn towards it then tries to correct but doesn't do a good job of it, probably due to reduced speed. The yacht captain definitely should have given the Bayliner a wider berth when passing.

People like us are just nothing to important jerks like that. Too bad they will not share the same anchorage that night. SCUBA lets you disconnect an anchor shackle during a night dive. In this case the captain of the larger yacht chose to thread the needle on the starboard instead of overtaking on the port where there’s loads of room based on the boat being overtaken. It’s ok to play on the water. It’s not ok to power your yacht like a bully. Yes the guy should have been paying more attention in the Bayliner, but he was intent on the waves ahead of him, his primary task at the moment. If I wasn’t retired and had to write a citation,,, it would all be the larger yachts fault.

  • I refer people to the COLREGs: First, this is not an overtaking situation: Rule13 Overtaking b. A vessel shall be deemed to be overtaking when coming up with another vessel from a direction more than 22.5° abaft the beam, that is, in such a position with reference to the vessel she is overtaking, that at night she would be able to see only the stern light of that vessel but neither of her sidelights. Instead, this is a cross situation: Rule 15: Crossing situation When two power-driven vessels are crossing so as to involve risk of collision, the vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall keep out of the way and shall, if the circumstances of the case admit avoid, crossing ahead of the other vessel. So, the Bayliner was the "give-way vessel" and should have not attempted to pass in front of the larger vessel which was the 'stand on vessel' in this crossing situation, however... The larger vessel was crossing a known outlet from which other vessels should be known to emerge. Therefore, sailing so close and at such speed is (very) poor seamanship. It's interesting there is no sign of the large vessel in the earlier shots of the Bayliner leaving the inlet and indeed even the photographer wasn't aware of it until its bow filled the frame. I presume this 'fly-by' was done for nothing better that vanity to show-off the vessel to photographers at the outlet. However... Rule 34 states: a vessel nearing a bend or an area of the channel of fairway where other vessels may be obscured by an intervening obstruction shall sound one prolonged blast. There was no warning. Basically, the Bayliner skippers wasn't keeping a good lookout and aware of his situation, however, the large vessel was reckless in passing the mouth of the outlet so close and at such speed, failed to signal its approach and should, given the obstructed vision caused by the seawall, have passed with full knowledge a small boat could emerge unseen, i.e. not at full speed as done. Terrible seamanship

  • 😂😂😂😆The rich cousin is in a hurry and ignores the poor cousin... wait... that was the Bolivarian express and its commander the real Tony Montana, speaks loud and wide! This is a reflection of a decadent and rotten society at the root... prosperity & ignorance, a wonderful combination that now guides the American Way of Living...

  • I’m on the larger boats side. The smaller boat was not paying attention and put himself in danger. Large boats are not as maneuverable as smaller. Like a suv cutting of a semitruck.

    • Wrong! Overtaking vessel is always the give way vessel. It is his responsibility to safely pass the other vessel no matter how big an idiot the overtaken vessel is.

    • @@Juisfala- he can overtake on either side in US waters. The Overtaking Situation Any vessel overtaking any other vessel must keep out the way of the vessel being overtaken. The former is the give-way vessel and the latter is the stand-on vessel. This rule applies even if the overtaking vessel is propelled by wind, oars, or rubber band paddlewheel.
