Hyena Indirectly Saves Impala from Leopard
Retired professor in engineering at the North-west University, Peet Van Schalkwyk, was delighted to have come across this sighting at De Laporte in Kruger.
BOOK YOUR TRIP TO KRUGER: bit.ly/BookatKruger
Peet told Latetsightings.com “We were watching elephants, zebras, giraffes and impala drinking water at the waterhole from about 11:00 to 13:00. Many vehicles would come and go during that time.

We were about to leave when a lady told us that there is a leopard hiding in the bush and he was spooking the impala herds every now and then. He had however been unsuccessful the whole morning. We decided to wait and at about 14:00 he finally caught an impala. A number of impala were in the shallow water of a cemented dam. The leopard chased and one impala slipped in the water. The leopard grabbed it by the neck and dragged it towards a tree, but along came a hyena and when it saw the leopard with the impala, it chased the leopard away. The impala was not dead and it got away in the confusion. The hyena rescued the impala by accident!
We were extremely excited and knew that we have witnessed something special. This was a first for us. I witnessed a cheetah kill before but never a leopard kill. It is worth it to wait and spend time at waterholes. My wife Lynn took some pictures while I was videoing. My canon video camera has the function to include 3 seconds of material so that is why I could manage to get the whole incident on tape.”

Impala: You saved me Hyena: I wouldn't say saved, more like under new management
That slippery pool near the bushes is a perfect death trap !!
Amer J The larger animals get injured or trapped due to slipping. The concrete edges are horrible; that's how the Impala was caught in the beginning.
Was ridiculous how it was just running in place like a cartoon character in that pool.
i completely agree it's interfering with nature
If it's the dry season, it may be the only water available.
Amer J Right??? 👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
Hyena says if I'm not eating.. The leopard is not eating..
Hyenas are fucken trolls of the jungle. If trolls were to ever exist. They would look like Hyenas. Lol
The Hungry Black Panda 😂😂
Xaxaxaxaxa
Ya jaluousy hyena
They are very annoying
Other impalas to their friend: "Next time no swimming in the pool. Just drinking"
That impala was running in place like they do in scooby doo.
😭😂
Lmfao. I heard the sound effect xD.
That was funny!
That pool is made of concrete. Hooves are crap on concrete and roads.
Uhgene Ignorian 😂
I'm not convinced the Impala was saved.
Yes the headline is a joke the hyena came out of the woods with bloody neck obviously the hyena made meal out of the lmpala
That's what I thought too ..why else would the hyena had the bloody neck...I wish the Impala would have attacked the hyena but unfortunately I don't think that ever happens!
I'm not convinced the single Hyena can catch Impala which is really fast
@@msy7023 Impalas tend to slow down a tad with half their neck missing.
They are never saved
When it is decided from above, it's not your day.
Such a kind animal the hyena is
Leopard fears of hyena because he knows that his jaws are more injurious than him
Lesson for leopard: Don't catch anything you can't take up a tree.
So happy to see life is being saved !!
And one feel hunger... What about that..
Doubt it actually survived, the leopard was surely doing damage that whole time
And let the leopard starve?? There's not many leopard so let them eat!!!!

If it was eating the impala why would there be only a bit of blood on the side of its neck/head. Surely if it killed and ate the impala its head and snout in particular would be covered in blood? Probably got it from the when confronting the leopard with the impala.
That impala was actually slippary🔥🔥 It slipped by both leopard and hyna😂😂
I tried holding my breath whenever the impala was being choked, which is obviously nothing compared to getting your windpipe crushed by fanged jaws. Very brutal nature is
These man made watering holes in Kruger Park are just confusing. Even for the animals
Not man made. Past muddy edge that hardened over time
Fr
I think the made that for a safe water drinking for animals rather than having crocs everywhere they drink
Actually leopard saves impala from drowning.
Underrated

That's a good Boy or Girl cause i love hyenas they are my favorite animals on this planet.
Are you a serial killer or smth lol ))
Me too they are very misunderstood
How to ruin someone's day in animal kingdom.
How the hell was that deer able to live after having punctured wounds in its neck like that? That was one tough deer. A human woulda probably been dead within the first 3 seconds !
I don't think it got far. When the hyena comes back there is substantial blood on its face.
Impala are antelope not deer
The teeth of big cats rarely puncture the throat they just restrict the air getting into its lungs . They suffocate their prey to death
Even if it did survive, that'll almost certainly get infected and it'll die from either the infection itself or a predator because it's weak due to the infection :(
Its because the jaws rarely ever puncture, its less bleed to death and more suffocating by blocking the windpipe
That's gotta be the least clickbait title I've seen in a minute. Good stuff!
He remember his impala friend with whom he uses to swim together. He couldn't t let him be a leopard meal
Wasn't trying to rescue the Impala it was trying to eat it, and chase off the leopard 🐆 so it can have a meal all by himself 😂
Indirectly: in a way that is not directly caused by something; incidentally.
Captain obvious

@Darrin Robinson sarcastic 😂
You see lions carrying impalas like that? The strength of these leopards is amazing.
;;;; 0 it’s all that tree climbing, hauling an antelope up a 20 ft tree with your mouth is a good work out!
Lions don't have to move their kill. They eat wherever they damned well please.
I saw a male lion carrying a Buffalo couple of meters
@Jack Azz when the heck you ever see lion taking down a tiger?
Lions are capable of the same feats also they don’t need to hide their prey. A single lone hyena won’t wanna try and fuck with a Lion during its meal
Lynn and I waited almost 2 hours for this to happen. It was at De Laporte, about 6 km south of Skukuza. My canon legria video camera adds the previous 3 seconds to the video otherwise it would be almost impossible to record the complete catch.
Is there a break in the video between the impala running away and the hyena back at the pool?
Yes, I missed that part
In any case thank you for sharing the footage 🙂
So you hang out waiting for animals to die in terror and get eaten alive?
@@Doriesep6622: happens in nature all the time. Doesn't matter if cameras are there to capture it or not.
And that's how nature works.
This reminds me of the video where a leopard was hunting an impala at a waterhole just like this one. Two or three lions showed up and the leopard ran off, but they managed to steal the impala.
i STRONGLY recommend you look up the definition of the word "SAVED" in an English Dictionary!.
Are they arguing about pronouncing "potaytoe" as "potarto"???. say wha?
This hyena took less time than any detective to draw the right conclusion
That moment when your enemy saves you from your enemy!😂
Leopards are always scared of hyenas and rightly so. Much tougher, larger, durability than leopard
Because that fucking animal came in groups
Cause hyenas always travel in packs. This one must’ve gotten lost lol. I was waiting for a lion to jump out from nowhere and attack all them lol
I though leop Stand up to hyen
Young leopard does afraid but older leopard doesn't fear hyena is like Young lion doesn't stand for buffalo but grown lion is fearless is depending on aging
@@azaniabantu not true at all. Leopard at all ages fear hyenas and run away from them. Literally there are tens of videos out there that shows that
This is called turning point in life❤️❤️ God pls give me turning point for me as well😭😭😭
Impala was like: I hate this game, too many bugs and glitches. I can’t even get up this slope
leopard: AA dude what are you doing. Hyena: It's a free country bro
I wonder how could that impala survive after being grabbed and dragged for so long.
Though basically every wildlife documentary ever disrespect them impala are pretty strong and Hardy, check out an impala fight on KZhead, it's just that leopards and hyenas and lions make the seem like weak and fearful animals
👍👍👍
He didn't. The title is click bait
man made concrete pond makes for an easy & unnatural hunt!
Roads do as well. Often hooved animals slip on them in the chase. The big cats know it as well.
I thought it was cement too, but I'm pretty sure it was just mud.
greg armstrong -- Yep ive seen it in a few videos where they slip while running and just as you mentioned, the lions in that video seemed to have been forcing the prey to run in the direction of the road knowing there was a good chance of it slipping. Very clever tactic by the lions.
Well, if it was a more natural pond, it would have been muddier. The impala could have gotten stuck in the mud so it would still be an easy hunt. It's not unnatural for an animal to slip anyways, concrete or not.
z moore it was made for the camera purposes not right, the impalas hooves slide on outer part of pool. thry don't stand a chance. not right it upsets balance.
Thanks for the heads up birds.
When was it recorded
I never knew a leopard could run away from a hyena.
Hyenas are larger than leopards, plus live in clans of up to over 100 members. Hyenas also have literally the strongest bite force of any mammal on earth. It is far safer to flee than to risk death or serious injury, which is also the same as death for a solitary predator like a leopard
@harikrishnad9216 tigers don't need to worry about hyenas they don't live near each other, and if you mean bite force yes hyenas have stronger bite than a tiger, it's purely for bone crushing while feeding to get more food value though
That's one lucky impala.
News flash: It got eaten the next day.
They suffocate the animal not puncher a hole in it.....thats why when you do see ones get away they usally spring right back into life!
Yeah he's like those are my future dinners get out of my kitchen!
I m convinced after watching many Leopard Vs Hyena battles Leopard is a real Sucker......😂

I know tigers, lions and Jaguars may be larger but ,to me, the leopard is the most impressive feline specimen.
Off course, the hyena save after eating the poor empala.
That Hyena's stomach was looking different after chasing leopard away.
An injured impala can't outrun a hyena which is known for having the exceptional stamina.
Animals are strong, cant believe the impala didnt break its neck
Why is it not laughing though? Like, heheehehehehehehehehehe kekekeke hihihihihi.... This hyena is BROKE!! 🌚
🤣
Kitty S lmao 😂
Hyenas “laugh” when they’re pressured or stressed. This hyena was confident in winning against the leopard.
Gino Losoya I was actually cool with hyenas until I saw a video of a little boy on KZhead with his head and face ripped apart and it brought tears to my eyes and they said it was done by a hyena so kind of lost my like for them after seeing that
Music Hive : Oh yeah? What about humans ripping apart many animals? Why don't you hate humans too then? 🙄
Hyena be like: Na Khaayenge Na Khaane Denge😂😂
That impala had a cartoon moment when u tryna run but end up goin nowhere 😆😆
This is when toes and claws are superior to hoofs.
Poor impala. That was a man made pond by the looks of it. The impala was caught because it was struggling to get out of the pond, not because it was slow to react or weak. Not nature at its finest at all..
Yeah! Man made pan with a concrete base as mentioned in the description.
Please, it was slow or weak. Concrete is not hard to walk on
"Concrete is not hard to walk on" except when its wet. Cloven hoofs nor panic wouldn't help
It’s called survival of the fittest. I understand it was concrete but still it was unlucky for the impala and that’s just how nature works
Nature works with it’s surroundings it was just at the wrong place at the wrong time
Hyena obviously thought the prey was already down/dead and was an easy meal.
Saved briefly
That beginning was too funny how it got snatched up. Lol. I'm sorry
Valeu hiena! 😁🤙🏼
I missed the part when the impala is "saved" and not laying down dead.
The description
The leopard returns after the initial shock from the surprise visit of the hyena and has its lunch as planned.
Which weed do you smoke???
Impala like never thought I'd say thank you to a heyena
There's no way that impala survived that. It might have gotten away now, but there's no coming back from a neck wound like that.
Fiyaaah I dunno man. I’ve seen some crazy injuries on animals and they keep ticking
Geez he was still alive till that time. Imagine the pain.
I
The hyena wanted to eat the impala too and not save it 😂
It got away but it looks like the Impala isn't going to get far most likely. Probably a punctured windpipe and it looks like the Hyena bit its back leg or something (blood on its face).
Hyena wants it for itself 😂 Aww but that was sad watching the animal get dragged 😔
Hyena is very underated, they ate a bad species, Lion King was dead on point.
The hyena just came and hated on the leopards lunch. Lol
Amazing catch.... 🐆
Not really. That's clearly a man made pool and the only reason the leopard caught the antelope is because it could get out because of the steep sides...
Irrespective of the nature of the actual pan / pool, it's still "an amazing catch!" both by the Leopard and the photographer, Peet Van Schalkwyk. 👍👌
I would love to have a couple of pet Hyenas. So cute.
okay, but no boyfriends with green hair.
No, you wouldn't.
They have one of the strongest bites in their continent. They would bite your hand off like you biting a bannana.
There is a video on KZhead. A guy was raising one in his apt. Got his hand crushed. Their jaws are powerful.
They're cute as long as their bellies remain gorged.
Not sure if people realize that drought in Africa cause more animal deaths than the little slippery pool ! Probably that pool save more lives than death it cause
That's a good point, but it still pisses me off to see them slip. There should be a sign "No swimming." LOL
Hyena probably should have waited until the impala was dead before it stole it.
What happened to the water truce?
Amazing!! Hyena saves lives with out even trying!! Genius
Thats what hyenas are paid for !!
The sounds are actually DoT(damage over time) hit marks. Bleed DoTs FTW!
So powerful Carrie's Impala like nothing
Thanks for sharing this sighting Peet Van Schalkwyk and KS! 👍👌 I'm about to view it now ... just hoping though that it's not gory. 😱😳
😘😁 Thanks Brian, but I have been watching the LIVE Safari Drives for many, many years now, & simply choose to avoid viewing anything that I know that neither my stomach nor heart can handle. Fortunately I've never witnessed an actual kill whilst on real safari myself, but have witnessed the birth of an Impala, and watched a baby Giraffe attempting to stand up for the first time ever. 👍👌 OH! I've also been chased by Black Rhino TWICE on Bush Walks. 😱😬😨 ~Durban ~ KwaZULU Natal~
3 scenes, 1) Leopard 🐆, Impala , Hayena… 2) Hayena eat the Impala, ( delete scene) 3) Hayena in the water after having " Lunch" 😉
That blood on hyena neck is a sign it’s from eating a good impala meal washed down by pool water.
The hyena wanted the whole feast. Feast ran off
Hyena chased the leapard off to eat the impala all by himself Hyena at 1:43 "My bad"

I believed the impala kicked it running away
I think the impala was lucky to get away from the leopard but got eaten by the hyena down the hill/slope. The clip is edited( hyenas don't give up a chase very easily) they can run for miles and miles.Remember the antelope was nearly choked out and probably unbalanced on it's legs. and out of range to see what happened out of view.
lol that human-made water pond is certainly not concern about impala's safety
I think the leopard is paid actor 😂
That impala wished he was eaten by a leopard instead of hyenas. Those wilds dogs & hyenas will eat you ALIVE.
What other way is there to eat something. It usually takes a while for something to completely die.
