"At the scene near camp Khwai, we saw two lionesses lying in the shade on a blistering hot day. After a while we returned to camp for brunch and around 40 min later we returned to the lions to see if anything had changed. Upon arrival, we noticed there were no lions in the shade, but when we looked to the other side of us we saw the lions already on the roan antelope less than 15 meters from us. The initial attack was only witnessed by the people in our car and we were the only people that witnessed everything from start to finish."
"Initial emotions were emotions of excitement at being able to see such a rare sighting in broad daylight. However, as the day unfolded feelings of sorrow and heroics developed towards the struggling roan. Battered and bruised, the roan was fighting for survival."
"By the time we had to leave late afternoon both the roan and lions were lying in the shade, mere meters away from each other. It seemed as if there was a truce between them. We returned to the scene the next morning, but didn’t see anything. I am of the opinion that the roan died somewhere during the night, but no one knows for sure. One can only assume what happened in the end."
"I have been privileged to see many rare animal sightings and behaviours throughout Southern Africa, but this tops the list as the most touching and memorable sighting. Almost as if there was an emotional connection”.

  • Once you saw the lionesses biting the hinder parts, it was over. They knew it, but the brave and valiant strove on. This is testimony that most creatures truly want to live..... with all their might. Looking forward to that day.

    • @@BoveeBabyThe lion's bit into parts of the spine (favourite strategy when dealing with large herbivores) in the gaps between the disks. When that happens ( as with any broken bone) , the body begins to stiffen and swells the perceived broken bone area to self immobilise to aid healing which unfortunately leads to motor /neuron soft tissue disruption, nerve pinching and so on, severely limiting its ability to control its own body, now this would be ok if it had the luxury of time and no predators around as they can recover within days but unfortunately not for this one...

    • @@juliusjohnson1660 Tell that to the Sable Antelope males, that 90% succesfully defend themselves against lion attacks with the bigger variety of these curved horns, perfect for defending the back, Roan Antelope just doesn't have the right reach of the horns. Gemsbok, while powerful and not as weak as most antelopes, aren't as aggressive as the Sable Antelope.

  • This is honestly of one the saddest videos I’ve ever seen in my life. The Roan will not give up. The damn thing can barely walk but it won’t give up. Puts so many things into perspective. The Roan doesn’t care that it can’t move. It just doesn’t want to die. It has an inherent will to live and it won’t go down without a fight. Awe inspiring. I have depression a lot, but nothing in my life could compare to this. Rest In Peace brave Roan, and thank you for the gift you’ve given me in witnessing your spirit fighting until the end. Never give up.

  • I found this heart-rending to watch Nada.Sandro Geyser is right saying this was a very touching and emotional sighting. The roan was so brave to get up and face the two lionesses off, even though you could see it had been badly injured..even when the lioness crept up on it on the road and attacked,it still fought back as best it could:you could see the terrible injuries to the legs as the roan still kept doggedly on...trying so hard till it collapsed in total exhaustion under the tree. This reminds me of the buffalo "kill" heard by the dam that lasted over forty minutes and that incredibly brave impala that stood up and refused to just give in..if this shows anything..it is the unending perseverance of the lions;and one very courageous roan.It is nature's law and it can sometimes be horrifically cruel.

Underrated 77 if your ass was on the the ground with a punk cop knee on your neck . You think anybody going to show you empathy.
