  • This is brilliant and far less expensive than the shelves they sell in the stores that are marketed for cat perches. These also look nicer and are more easily customizable than most of the other DIYs I've seen for this. I've been thinking of doing something like this for my foster kitten room and this is purrfect. • Recommended improvement. Get a big sheet of thick plywood (or several). Attach this whole set up to that plywood sheet. Attach the plywood sheet to the wall with 4 screws. Voila. You now have a portable cat wall that you can take with you when you move, reposition if you decide to remodel aso. Also, more convenient to repair & make improvements etc to your cat wall when it is easily detachable. 😽

  • They make flat caps for 2.5 & 3in pvc. There is also a cap that fits inside that could be used instead of the cardboard. If you drill a hole on the line where the rope stops you can feed it in & use that to clamp the end of the rope. Epoxy might work better than hot glue. Really cool idea though.

    • That’s great feedback! Thanks for the input. Hopefully this comment gets highlighted so that it helps others. Thanks!😀

    • Not sure about merits of using epoxy in this application. I live in an apartment, no shop. In my (limited) experience, epoxy can be fussy, and fumes unpleasant. Hot glue seems much more controllable and safe given the environment! Those caps could be a good idea.

      @johncollinge619@johncollinge6193 жыл бұрын
    • @@johncollinge619 Alphafert brought up epoxy cuz there aren't many glues that actually stick/adhere to PVC, definitely not hot glue. Sanding the outside of the PVC will help give glue something to grip onto as well. If you're gonna go with hot glue I'd at least secure the ends with a stronger glue (maybe e6000 or epoxy..?).

      @PsychoPixy222@PsychoPixy2223 жыл бұрын
    • I thought that too about the flat ended PVC instead of cardboard. Though cardboard is the cheaper way if your tight on money, but flat PVC end would hold up longer and would be waterproof. If u decide to go the route of getting flat ends I recommend buying the PVC primer & glue in one ($5-10) and glueing PVC pieces together with that than any other glue. Loved this whole video though, was great! :)

    • If you don't mind the look, chair and table legs are excellent cat scratchers, just wrap it snuggly in sisal rope from top to bottom. We have it in addition to the cat trees to increase the amount of scratchers without crowding the apartment to much, when you have 4 cats avoiding dead ends is good. 😅 Our cats love it but I know some ppl don't like the look of sisal rope based scratchers.

    • go to home depot and buy a basic carpet roll, wood planks (size determined on how large you want to make landing pads etc), a bunch of 1x2 wood "strips" (enough to add 4 of them inside each footer tube), 1/2 inch or thicker plywood, rope/twine (same as in this video), PVC pipes (same as in this video), a bunch of metal L brackets, and cement footer tubes (diameter depends on how "thick" you want the "trunks" of the playscape/tree). Home depot also sells perfectly cut and beveled circles of wood of various sizes (located in wood section) the same wood circles he uses in this video (kzhead.info/sun/pNaReJiaoJV-l2w/bejne.html). cut the footer tubes to desired height, cut the plywood as desired for a sturdy base so the entire playscape doesn't tip over (SO A PRETTY LARGE BASE). use the 1x2 wood and screw inside the tubes (cut the length so it's the exact height as the footer tubes so the landings have something to attach to). There should be 4 pieces of the 1x2's inside the footer tubes (top, bottom, left and right) evenly spaced inside the tubes. arrange as desired. glue and staple gun carpet as desired (if using staples arrange them where the cat wont likely scratch to prevent injury), same with rope (mostly just rope the PVC pipe to cut on cost). Mount the footers to the plywood base with heavy duty L brackets (attaching them to the aforementioned 1x2 wood screwed inside the footer tubes) and hide the brackets under the carpet by cutting an X into the carpet, screw into the plywood, then glue the carpet back over the exposed bracket. Attach the landings by either screwing directly down into the 1x2's or using the L brackets... I'm sure you can figure it out once you have all the materials.

  • Wonderful idea!!! I will be adding a few of these to our home's kitty accouterments. 😸 The only change/addition I will add is using a fender washer or possibly a plug of wood inside the cap that attaches to the wall, just to add a little more support. The inside of PVC caps are usually slightly convex, so it would be difficult to use additional screws and keep things level, but a large washer or wood disk should increase the surface area of the fasteners support (screw head). We have a herd of climbing kittles with three seriously large boys that tip the scale at around 20+ pounds (think beefy bobcats dressed as ginger tabbies and a tuxedo). I'm not sure a single lag screw alone in a PVC cap would support a turbo powered kamikaze kitty in high speed zoomy mode doing speed laps before settling down to take a nap. Our herd of divine felines will love these!!!

    @lonnarheaj@lonnarheaj Жыл бұрын
    • Yup wood block inside the wall end cap and use pvc adhesive to keep the end cap on (it fuses the plastics and welds it so its as strong as if it were one part). The screws will quite rapidly eat/saw/deform their way through the pvc as it gets used as pvc is soft.

  • Cat lover here. Just subscribed b/c: 1. I'd love to see more vids building cat towers, perches, scratching posts, etc; 2. You are very clear (thanks) and make process simple for those of us less experienced and you say why you do stuff so I can learn; and 3. You are left handed and it helps to see how to work left-handed. Please Please Please make videos about how to use power tools and do stuff as a left-hander -- some tools seem designed for right-handers (like circular saws) and maybe you have suggestions from your experience. Thanks so much and success to you.

    • @@aaronfixesstuff I really hope you make an "Out In Left Field Tool Use" series. I know it would make power tools, for example, more accessible to me. And I bet there are other hand tool set ups that you can describe to a left-hander (or at least suggestions about how to use guides mounted for right-handers). And -- nudge nudge -- demonstrating while making cat accessories is a bonus. Best wishes.

  • I can see you were struggling a good deal with the ropes sliding around while you worked, would highly recommend scoring up the outside of the pvc with something rough so that the rope has more friction to stay put! It will also help with having the glue a rough surface to adhere to, hot glue and smooth stuff generally doesn't hold super well. Looks sick though.
