Drag Race! Shelby GT500 vs. BMW M8 Competition vs. Polestar 1

In our test with these three modern muscle cars, we just had to figure out which was fastest in a quarter-mile setting. Over the course of three races, including a rolling start...we found our answer!

When we got the opportunity to test three modern muscle cars side by side - the BMW M8 Competition, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, and the Polestar 1 - we knew we had to line these three up against each other in a straight line.
You're probably thinking to yourself: There's no way these three wildly different cars really compete, right? Well, they're actually more evenly matched than you might think - at least on paper. The Shelby is technically the most powerful, churning out 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet from its supercharged 5.2-liter V8. And in perfect conditions, Ford says this car will sprint to 60 miles per hour in just 3.3 seconds.
The BMW M8 Competition's twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 pumps out 617 hp and 553 lb-ft by comparison. But with a highly advanced launch control system and all-wheel drive, BMW says that this car will hit 60 in just 3.0 seconds flat. That makes it the quickest car of the three.
But don't count out the Polestar 1. The coupe's hybridized, supercharged, and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 619 hp and a whopping 737 lb-ft - that's more torque than both the Mustang and the BMW. Since this Polestar is heavier than the other two (it tips the scales are more than 5,000 pounds), it takes closer to 4.0 seconds for this car to hit 60.

    • I just love that we still have these beats in 2020. I’m still waiting to find my ideal F10 M5. I’m old enough to warrant a 4 door, and an 11 second luxury car is more than fast enough for me! (Plus I still have my Mustang Cobra from 1996 with a mod or two)

  • Can we mention how all 3 of these cars are engineering masterpieces in their own aspects? The BMW is yet another addition to a line of great cars. The polestar is very unique. The mustang is just pure nasty American power. All three are amazing in their own respects

    • Kind of true up to a quarter mile. Example Agera RS(twin turbo V8 1360hp RWD) vs Bugatti Chiron (quad turbo W16 1500 hp AWD) chiron could beat Agera RS to a quarter mile drag.... But what after that? Agera RS better acceleration....

  • That first one was actually a very impressive launch for the Mustang. Just enough slip to smoke a little but still a lot of traction. The 2nd one definitely deserved another shot.

  • GT500 didn't hook at all, specially on the 2nd race & it was still called as best as it gets! at least from the video it looks like a spin, bogged down & then acceleration, lowering rpm should help.

    • I would get the GT500 as well but I wonder how the Polestar would be if it was 1200lbs lighter. It seems to be quite the luxury car but it goes against the NSX and Lexus LC500? They could've went a little more sporty i think

  • The shelby GT500 base model actually weighs less than 4,200lbs and its around 4,187lbs. The carbon fiber package GT500 weighs 4,056lbs

  • M8 is a beast. See a lot tuning the platform on the new M5 but not really seen anyone do it to the M8. Would love to see even. Stage 1 tuned M8 to see what difference it makes.

    • That's not saying much when you can buy 2 GT500's or 3 GT350's for that price lol. They ruined that launch on the Mustang really bad though, you can see the burnout. The GT500 is faster in the quarter when hooked up properly. Either way the GT500 would still beat it around a track. Kind of ironic when a German car is good in a straight line and an American car is faster on the track

    • @@ishra8926 GT500 hasn't gone on the Nurbergring, but has beaten every GT3 RS on pretty much every major track in NA. It would definitely beat an M8 considering that lol. And on a high speed track like the Nurbergring the GT500 would walk the M8 easily. Look up the track times on NA tracks.

  • Good content but I’ve seen Mustangs owners play with the setting and beaten m8cs from a dig. It’s just not a car you get in a drive. You gotta get use to it. TC off change rpm and a few other techniques than just smashing the gas which causes that wheel spin. It can be done but you gotta tinker it

  • Not sure I get the GT500, is it a drag car or a track car? What kind of lap times does it do? As a pure drag car it might do ok on slicks, but on street tires or on the street it doesn't seem to hook that well.

You could literally sit there and stare at an M8 for hours.. it’s fast, all year around car, more practical. The Surround sound system, technology, the luxury.. the M8 is a completely different car. And if you really know your cars, the competitors for this car is actually 30k base price more than the M8, it’s competitors.. AMG GTor 911, Panamera are all 170k plus while the M8 isn’t. M8 is priced really nicely. Only people who don’t know or understand the car say it’s not worth the price. A BMW takes more than just a review to understand. You need to be able to actually get behind the wheel, live with it for about a week, then you’ll see if you actually value it. Most people change their minds after a week, BMWs are complex cars a review or a day with it won’t benefit you or give you a good satisfaction. The M8 for its weight around the track is absolutely ridiculous, the usability for everyday things is great. It’s just as fast entry level to mid level Supercars, the paint work is excellent, it’s quality. You get in the car, the smell, the texture the sound of you closing the door, the materials you touch everything soft, no creaks like a Ford. This isn’t a regular car people are use to.

    • @@davidwade7681 The V8 S63TU is pretty reliable when taken care of, BMW over the years have updated the S63 common problems - hence the “tu” in S63. No more rod bearing issues, fires or anything. I’ve seen 140k out of an S63 in a X5M, owner says more technical issues than mechanical, he says only spent $800 in repairs within the last 8 years since ownership. And I don’t know who puts 140k in a Luxury 2 door sports car. These cars aren’t beaters, the problem is mostly owners who think BMWs are regular cars to maintain. These are performance cars.. you have to take care of it, same with the mustang or anything over 400HP with turbos / Superchargers.

  • Hm, not sure why they say $175k for the M8 ... the most I could get it to was $171k ... but that include CCB, Night Vision, A track day, High End Stereo (1400W), Drive Assist, Individual interior, exterior colors. Got the GT500 to $107k (and it's still $13k short to add 3'rd party CCB). Would be more meaningful to quote base list price, instead of whatever config the loaner car is.

  • Goes to show you how much AWD adds to the equation! If the Gt500 had AWD things would have been much different. And the BMW probably costs more. The ‘Rolling Start’ drag race showed the benefits upon launch of AWD over RWD! From a purely Maintenance-based level, in the long run, I figure the GT500 would have a cheaper replacement parts for what ails the car, as opposed to the BMW. Because you’re going to have to think about what happens once you’re off warranty! That’s when the financial fun begins! Overall, I hear BMW V8s weren’t all they’re cracked up to be once the mileage accumulates. Not all, of course, but there are a few best avoided. American V8s ‘Rule’ in my mind, plus they’re familiar once you get into them mechanically. Durability has almost always been their strong suit! IMHO . . .

  • You have to do that again at 3500. 2500 just stalled out from a standing start! All wheel drive is pretty tough to beat in that or any format and compared to BMW. We have so much to learn about HP and how to get it applied to the wheels better. An AWD Mustang would scare BWM that we are catching on to their secret.

  • Set the launch control rpm too high on the gt500 which should have known from the first race lol if you're spinning and have to let off the gas to get traction then you're launching too hard and that kills your 60foot and ultimately the 1/4 mile; Just helping for the future
