"Sliced" Apple slices, resin and cedar wood turned into a bowl / vase. Wood and Resin Turning

"Sliced" is a bowl that combined freeze dried apple slices, clear resin and cedar wood, power carved and turned on the lathe. I love the abstract feel of this one, of an apple with a bite missing....
This project is being sold at ArtForOUR.org, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Operation Underground Railroad.
I basically spend my free time dreaming up ways to express my artistic side and simultanously to raise money for Operation Underground Railroad. O.U.R. funds, supports, trains and guides rescue missions for children who are in sex trafficking slavery and free them to better lives with their amazing after care program. We cannot support O.U.R. enough. (OURRESCUE.ORG)

  • Dan: Finally, there is someone on KZhead who realizes the dangers of chainsaw blades used on angle grinders. As a. Safety engineer, I have I investigated hundreds of industrial accidents using these blades. In each, the injuries have been horrific and often times the individual loses a portion or all of the limb due to infection since large amounts of tissue are mangled or the person seriously disfigured. Head injuries common. Some insurance companies will not insure companies who use these blades. The biggest cause of accidents is kickback when using these blades. Kickbacks can occur in 1/100th second and much faster than a person can react since blade spinning around 10,000-13,000 rpm. Best thing is to avoid their use. Thanks for mentioning the problem with these blades in your video.

  • Another success mate, looks great 😎. The only thing I would have suggested is coating the final shape with resin to ensure the apple pieces stay sealed. What’s the freeze dryer you have? Time to buy a bigger pressure pot, mine fits those standard buckets, so if it fits in a bucket it fits in the pot. Mind you you’ll find you always need a bigger pot 🙄🤣

  • I just wanted to finally comment and maybe have a solution for you. I do some resin stuff as well and I noticed that you do use the glue a lot to patch.. have you thought about UV resin to patch? It works wonderfully and it's clear and cures with UV light in minutes.

  • The advice I've heard to avoid resin chip out.... don't push too hard with your tools. Very light passes. I know that's tough for you because you've said you're impatient. Give it a try, let me know. 🤟

  • Hi Dan, I forget what the material is called, and it is pricey, it comes in a full sheet, a full sheet I think it costs about $600. a sheet, but when you spill resin on the top of this sheet it pops right off. I've seen myself, I couldn't believe it. But, it is very expensive per sheet. Maybe I can find out what it is called and get back to you.
