NOTE: So the graphics are actually quite nice (the oceans actually look like, well, oceans), yours truly just pulled a DOH moment and forgot to raise the graphics to full.
Do you like RTS games? Do you like a good old Nuke Simulator? Do you enjoy the sounds of your opponent cursing your legion of walking destroyers? Because this game has all of that and way, way more.
Welcome to The Supreme Commander Review

  • The best thing about the unit design is that they are not as 1 note as Starcraft 2 units for example. They have small details that are not gamechanging but CAN be very usefull even later on when you moved to a better Tier. For example: The UEF has: - a Tier 2 Combat engineer, which can repair and has a few guns to protect itself, but can not build any structures other than Turrets. Sounds okay, but the true hidden utility is: They have a Radar Jammer. Meaning they show up as multiple units on the enemy radar. - The Tier 1 Frigate also has a radar jammer. - The Tier 1 sub (like all of them, except aeon) has a surface canon to fight over tanks. - A Tier 2 Gunship which can transport small units. You can get Engineers to reclaim to the front easily. Or you could ... Ghetto it up. Speaking of Ghetto: The Ghetto Gunship. This is taking a quirk of the engine and using it to turn a Transporter into a god damn nightmare. If a transporter picks up a Tier 1 light assault bot (the weakest combat unit there is in terms of health), then they point their guns downwards and: Can shoot while in the air. Now consider that a Tier 2 Transport can carry 12 of these. Each with 23 dps. A Gunship has 67 DPS. Tier 3: 250. You just turned your Transport into a tier 3 gunship in terms of damage. (Incredibly squishy tho). Cybrans have: - A tier 1 assault bot, that can assist engineers. - Boats that can walk on land. - Assault walkers which explode in an EMP upon death. - EMP tier 1 mobile artillery. etc. The Aeon has: - A mobile shield generator that can hover. Incredible navi synergy. - A floating Tier 1 Tank. - A Tier 3 assault bot that can also reclaim. Not to mention all the little quirks each experimental has. - The tempest can shoot straight up, if you order it to dive. I once sniped an Ahwassa out the air with that. - The Megalith can walk backwards if you order move commands close to its hind legs, firering while retreating. It can also fire its normal guns AND torpedos at the same time if halfway submerged. You can also build a unit on a downed experimental for insane reclaim. - You can control-K (Self destruction) a Ahwassa as its bomb releases. The bomb and the wreck will both crash in the same spot. - The Fatboy has Airstaging (repairs and refuels aircraft), Torpedos and factory capabilities. It is not just a tank that does the shooty bang bang (Looking at you: FATBOY II from supreme commander 2 ...) And SO much more. Each unit has some amazing gameplay depth that offers flexible approaches to situations. Except for Percis. Percis just go pew and you die.

  • Two things I love dearly about SC is 1/ air craft need fuel, and 2/ transport ferry/assist. 1/ When using aircraft (beside Experimentals), you must always be conscious of their fuels as these directly decide how far they can fly away from your factories/assembly areas. Careless management may result in your aircraft reaching an enemy base with zero fuel left, leaving them painfully vulnerable to even T1 AA. There are 2 ways they can refuel: landing on dedicated refuel/repair structures or units (carriers, UEF Fatboys, etc.), or just land on the ground (transports cannot dock on any structure or unit, but can land on the ground OR on water to refuel themselve at rapid paces). Now this is just half of what I wanted to talk about. Because, guess what? When you're about to launch an air attack, you're gonna want to check their fuels. If they landed on an assembly area after leaving the factory, waiting for the moment, then good, they're all fueled up. But what if they were patrolling around your base and now need to attack somewhere faraway? Then some of them, or A LOT of them are gonna running low on fuel halfway to the target. This means you need to tell them to refuel right away. And guess what? Those refueling structures and units can only accommodate limited number of aircraft at one time (which is decided by their physical sizes, which are relatively correlated to their Tech levels). Normally when you're fielding 20+ planes on patrol, just 2 or 3 air staging structures are already enough. But now, unless you want to manually refuel some some of them, even 8 air-staging structures will take a while to refuel all 20+ planes. This is why I LOVE carrier units, and LOVE UEF for having Fatboys and ATLANTIS (which can refuel/repair 150 aircraft at once, or even double that with a bit of micro). And I'm not even talking about the distances yet, which become painfully a big factor on large maps, and what make carriers extremely valuable as mobile air-staging facilities. 2/ oh god that 1/ got so long. But yeah, notice how your land units move awfully slow comparing to air units, and you have AIR UNITS for transportation? You're gonna want that. And guess what? You're not gonna need to manually uploading then unloading 150+ tanks into the battlefield. The transports themselves can automatically pick up units built from the factories (on Assist mode), units moving to or waiting at a Ferry Beacon (on Ferry mode). Or if the transports and tanks are selected, and you place the Transport order on a spot, the transports will automatically pick up the tanks and move them toward that location; any tanks aren't picked up will move toward said location, and the transports will come back to pick them up after dropping the others. Awesome, I know!

      @beetheimmortal@beetheimmortal7 ай бұрын
    • @@beetheimmortal what happened with sanctuary? speaking of srping engine, if you never played zero-k before it will blow your mind how it blow all other RTS in unit control, unit AI, tactical freedom and terrain manipulation. as for BAR it is as good looking as spring engine can get and is basically TA 2.0. i think you should give those 2 games a chance. if the the engine is trash, the games made with it are not.

      @jacksheldon8566@jacksheldon85667 ай бұрын
    • @@jacksheldon8566 I HAVE in fact played both Zero-K (which I regret because it's really, really bad in every possible way in my opinion) and BAR, which is not very good either. If you want to play TA, just play TA or Escalation, it's a much better experience despite the pixels. The Spring engine has absolutely atrocious physics and visuals compared to SupCom and even TA, which, although old, at least looks and feels grounded. In BAR, all the models, materials and textures look like plastic, the bullets/projectiles lack real speed and physics, and the sound effects are weak. Zero-K doesn't even have a basic tech upgrade system. Even SupCom 2 did that better, because at the very least it had tech upgrades, and SupCom 2 is fucking awful. Both BAR and Zero-K therefore feel like a teeny-tiny sandbox, unlike TA or SupCom, which Chris Taylor himself said he purposefully wanted to avoid when making SupCom. The only good feature in BAR I'd like to see in other RTS games is how you can basically draw your formation by holding RMB, but it's hardly worth playing a game just for that, especially if a game from fucking 1997 runs circles around it in game feel, and let's not even mention SupCom because at that point it just gets embarassing. Congrats to the BAR team for pulling off what they have, I'm sure they tried their best, but that doesn't mean their game is any good to actually play, and I won't pretend it is just because a small team made it. Also, the last time I tried playing Zero-K, I got a virus alert. Yes, this was a real thing and I think it has been fixed since, but it's still unintentionally hilarious for a game with an official Steam version. As for Sanctuary, not only does it run on Unity (I'm sure you're aware of all the recent controversy around it, it's also very unoptimised for large 3D environments and always has been), the Sanctuary dev team doesn't really seem to know what they are doing. I'm very much getting a "Star Citizen feel" from Sanctuary, in that they promise all these epic features, like nukes breaking through the ground and the seasons dynamically changing, features that could very well be good if they had the budget and know-how, but they do not really seem to have the budget OR the know-how. There also seems to be a severe lack of direction and insane feature creep, which means this game will either never come out, or if it does come out, it will be nothing like they promised and will be a barebones RTS not comparable to TA or SupCom. They want all this stuff in the game, yet they cut the navy and naval combat of all things, something TA had in 1997 for crying out loud. They seem to have their priorities completely backwards. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, we'll see, but I'm in no way optimistic about it.

  • Great and funny review, only criticism is that you refer the addon as SC2 but SCFA is much different from SC2. SCFA was more balanced than SC1 and more stable, talking about the CD version without updates. And if you wait for a sale on steam, which happens very often, you can get the gold edition (SC1 and SCFA) for under five bugs. Would like to see a video were you compare SC1/SCFA to SC2. It is not that hard to explain why SCFA has still these player numbers were SC2 has sometimes up to four games. Hope your channel gets bigger, I like your style! Greatings!

And in case you guys didn't know, FA is a stand-alone DLC, meaning it can be played without installing the original SC. On Steam, FA only costs around $7. So unless you really want to get a taste of the original SC, I recommend get FA for a lower cost but better gameplay experience + new units and faction. AND then get FAF too to enjoy a *wild* arrange of upgraded features, fixes and mods.

      @TheHappyTau@TheHappyTau3 жыл бұрын
    • @@TheHappyTau this is mostly due to it being an old game that isn't optimized for modern multi core processors much like crysis. At the time, they were still thinking cpus were going to pass the 5ghz barrier and beyond.

    • @@TheHappyTau i literally built my pc to run 4v4 setons (*ten* years after SC released) i skimped on everything to get the best cpu i could, overclocked it. it can't. it holds up pretty well, but god. damn. this game's cpu requirements are ridiculous. still the best RTS ever made ofc & totally worth suffering a little lag. hell, after the hour mark on setons (or similar maps) you might even be glad of the extra thinking space the simulation lag gives you.

  • Unfortunately, I had the xbox version of this game (which was buggy) but I remember specifically spending time to fill one half of the land bridge level with nukes. Also, if I recall, I think Nukes in the game additive with their explosion, so more nukes on one location creates a bigger explosion radius, but I might be wrong.

  • You forgot to mention one important part about this game Soundtrack (the SC1, not FA, it sucks) Sometimes i feel like gods of RTS looking at me playing and they play the perfect song for my final attack Also, how freaking HUUUGEEE everything in this game is. Galactic colossus is almost 300m tall For not metric friends, its almost as tall as Eiffel tower is And the reason why the oceans looked bad is probably because you played at medium graphic settings
