Why This Portuguese Sardine Cannery Swears By Its 100-Year-Old Method | Regional Eats
Canned sardines are a delicacy in Portugal. The country has a long fish-canning tradition, to the point that the sardine has become a national icon. We visited Conservas Pinhais, one of the oldest preserving factories in Portugal, that has kept its artisanal canning method since 1920. It makes 30,000 cans a day.

I was eating a can of their sardines (spiced, tomato sauce) as the video played. I've done the same with other foods that have accompanying videos such as this one; e.g., capicola. It certainly improves the experience. It also helps me to forget, at least for a little while, the expense of these oftentimes imported artisanal food products.
lol, it's fun eating the food you are viewing.
Same! It's amazing to think that, as I watch and eat, the little pickle melting in my mouth was packed by one of those ladies!
I thought i was the only person who did that thanks for your confession im not alone 😂❤👍
Nuri's spiced tomato sauce sardines are likely the very best I've ever tasted. Not at all what I was expecting after having tried several other brands' tomato sauced sardines. So WONDERFULLY different!!
Glad to see I'm not the only one who watches documentaries on the food they eat! I watched one on Colonel Sanders while eating KFC! lol
I appreciate that the owner of this business didn’t automate the whole process with the technological improvements, he kept them even though he can fire them to satisfy his greed, he treat them like a family , you have a very good place in heaven old man 👨🏻🦳❤️
I also appreciate that, but the process where they wrap the can with plastic? yeah that's too tedious and also create unnecessary waste. what do you think?
@@slumberstudio4757 They should stamp the production day at the back of the tin can, then wrap it in light carton paper
@@slumberstudio4757 This is a specialty for Austrian customers. AFAIK they have exactly the same Sardines in cans with everything printed on them for all other countries. It really pays to buy Nuri - they are excellent and I like to support this company and it's workers.

That smile on that womans face looked pretty damn genuine to me.
In regards to your first comment toward me. All personal things aside. A- you have absolutely no evidence or facts to base your assertions on. B- if your assertions were correct, productivity drops when there are highly paid workers doing low skilled jobs. Look at the price of these Niru brand sardines. $30 a can.

I ordered a few cans of the sardines in olive oil off amazon and they are absolutely incredible. Not only are the fish much bigger than the sardines in use to here in the US, but they had so much flavor. It didn't have a point of "this machine packages the sardines" It was these racks are made by Senhor Albino in his factory and Senhora Emilia is in charge of the tomato sauce. Names, faces and love really makes this video and their products shine. It really does make all the difference in realising that those individuals had the biggest impact on the product, not only the owner / CEO
I ordered some of the tomato ones from amazon after watching this video. They are closer to a good tuna in flavor than the sardines i'm used to, low in salt, and very mild.
*꧁༺his girl༻꧂ * google "nuri sardines." I found some for sale on Amazon as well as an online Portuguese grocer website that sells them. I only could find the spiced in olive oil tho.
*꧁༺his girl༻꧂ * You're welcome, sweetie!
Sorry but your order is coming from China.why order from Amazon when you can get it at any Mexican store.Amazon rip people off.fake Shits

When you watch to the end you realized that there just a small business keeping open a tradition a culture that their community can still share to the world
Makes me wish I was a part of something so special
I love the videos from this channel. Claudia is an excellent journalist. One more reason to know Portugal.
These look absolutely amazing.
I love the fact that they give more jobs to people , as automation is leaving more and more people out of work i support these type of businesses that prefer people over machines

you NEED humans for this for quality control, the human will notice if the fish looks bad the machine will just feed you bad fish
Damn they have a marble table to cut sardines .. Classy
Marble is easy to keep clean
Fish and marble tables go along forever in markets and fish production in Portugal, it's tradition. And i bet you those are the original marble tables that factory had when it started.
Marble is very cheap in Portugal, as it is the local stone
So happy to have this video show up on my page. I just ordered from the company, and can hardly wait. Just like waiting for Christmas to arrive as a kid. Thank you "Insider Food". Bill from the middle of nowhere Montana.....USA
