DOUGSCORE CHART:

Audi probably ditched the center screen to create a timeless look that will age well no matter how long into the future the car lasts. It seems like most automakers are trying to declutter their interiors nowadays.
I just bought my first vehicle with a center screen last year. I really wanted a screen. Now that I have it, it’s nothing special. When I buy another car I won’t care about a screen
I, for one, absolutely hope that this trend takes off. There are so many cool cars from the 2000s and 2010s that will be seriously desirable one day due to being the last of the gas generation but they will be ruined by their interior screens that are difficult to change. I really want to buy a land rover LR4 and cant bring myself to accept a 2k immediate expense to change the screen just to lose functions...
Yep, nothing ages a car more than old tech. In some ways I find early 2000s cars without a screen less 'old seeming' than mid 2000s ones with 15 year old screen tech.
Buggati does the same with their cars
Yup. Same with that new Chiron
A great run. It was(is) a hell of a car, one of the most original super car designs ever.
It's alright to say good bye to the car early on.
Thanks for letting us know your opinion!
Original? They stole the back end from the Murcielago.
Litteraly just a cheaper lambo, original lmao
@@ovs4744 first production car to have led headlights
Corrections: You can open the rear glass hatch without the motor running. Dont push the brake and hit the start button then pull up on the hatch switch. Missed feature: The checker flag button is also a dial. When you push the button you can then scroll through 3 Performance modes: Rain, Snow, Dry. Something Huracans don’t have.
Because you only drive a Hurracan when the weather is perfect.
@@NinjaRunningWild Same Thing with this R8. you’re not gonna drive this in the heavy rain or snow lol
That's why I'd pick r8 over huracan anyday.
Yeah I have an R8 and was like Ummmm Doug your wrong lol(I wasn't gonna say anything tho) Haha
@@1Interloper is he right about the centre console storage? There is that little chrome thing on the side which looks like it would be a button to open a bigger console bin, is it just a chrome decoration?
Always had a soft spot for the 1st gen V8 with the Gated Manual. One of my favorite "maybe eventually attainable" supercars.
Hopefully your dreams comes true
Same here dude those are awesome cars
Always preferred the original design with the single side blade. Far more unique looking.
Agreed 💯
I loved both R8 models, but you're right. Audi even had the guts to stick a V12 TDI into the R8 too like the Q7.
Me too. I drove one (just a test drive, thank you Audi dealer), it looked stunning and drove just as well. I think they missed a trick not calling the second gen the R-10 and the next the R-e.
Looked more classy too.
The original R8 just looked nicer overall. It looked far more appropriate for the price point. The facelifted one just looks cheap and too much like an ordinary Audi sedan when you look at all the details. I especially don't like the honeycomb pattern plastic grilles. They just dont belong on a supercar imo. The original R8 was truly special.
I actually really like that it doesn’t have a screen in the center console. It will probably age much better that way.
I agree
@@drippgxd I agree. I also agree that most Audi's are poo poo along with their poo poo engines and poo poo transmissions. I think BMW and mercedes are much nicer than poo poo.
Bugatti did the same thing and yea it actually makes a lot of sense.
@Catholic Firefighter then some prefer cars that look like they're from the 70's. what's wrongwith that ?
Not exactly sure why you give the Practical score a 2 when its more "daily drivable and livable" than any of the other supercars in the category, Doug. Long live the R8!! I have a Gen 1 V10 with a gated manual and have been completely in love with it since the day I've owned it. Future classic!!!
Because the "Doug score" doesn't take into account the class of car, it's less practical than a SUV so it get's a low score. Yeah... A stupid scoring system.
@@ChuckFickens1972 still, he could’ve given it a 3
@@Incrazyboyy Yes, I had the same thought. There are other vehicles in this segment he gave a 3, this should get one as well. Also think it got shafted a point on value.
It's a supercar which doesn't have as much space as an SUV, less space fore passengers like a van, uses about as much gas if not more than a pickup truck, and is lower to the ground. Sounds like a 2 to me. Practicality is how good it is for any sporadic use. Yes it can be used for passengers, but not well, yes it can be used for a road trip, but it will cost more, you can't really get your fancy new TV to fit in it if you needed, etc. This is what the practicality score means. The score doesn't just mean is it comfortable to drive, it's would you use this for anything spontaneously. It can be used for many of these things, but not well or not at all. You're really filtering your views of the car purely because you own one. It even has that weird flap that stays in the way of the cup holder and doesn't automatic seats or adaptive cruise control. These are features that heavily weigh into the practicality score.
Nice! Enjoy your ride!
the no center screen is a nice touch for making the interior fairly timeless and that steering wheel looks AMAZING
There is just something about the R8 that has always made it stand out from every other supercar of this era. There are so many mixed opinions about this car, but I honestly love it and always have. From the original R8 with a v8 to today's version with a v10, its always been one car that is very appealing in my opinion especially with the color choices they offer. Every time I see one on the roads, it makes me smile knowing that there are still people who truly appreciate this car. Hopefully the electric version will continue this car's special legacy for years to come.
I wonder if some of that is because it's an Audi, you know it's going to be good no matter what.
It's the shorter less aerodynamic hood and the lack of overhang beyond the wheel arches... it's easy to be recognized as an R8, so they do stick out, and people will look twice at them. I still can never figure out why something that offers a lot for the money and still seems like a badass vehicle gets such a low value score. I mean, they may stop depreciating as soon as they stop making them with a V-10.....then demand will pick up because dey don't make em like dat no more , and after bottoming out around $40-$60k around the year 2026, they'll start selling for more and more in 10 or so years from 2032 and up..... unless petrol becomes illegal or at least unattainable in the bleak and horrible future... granted we all don't get nuked or hit by a comet by then.
I drive for a living, so I have no use for cars that can't be driven without breaking them. I see people daily-driving R8s whereas I don't see that with almost any other supercars except high-end Porsches, and that gives me a special respect for this car. The R8 is outrageously fun and relatively practical, and that's a rare combo.
@@jasonbaird1645 yeah, exactly. I've seen a few R8's, around my area being driven daily or at least every weekend, and some new Porsches too.... people are putting more miles on them.... because they Can.
it is to loud inside can,t hardy here you talk constant drone
I feel the first gen is actually more “futuristic” than this current gen. I find the subtle curves and flow far more attractive than these new sharp/squared/jagged Audi designs. Plus the back end of the first gen is just perfect, such a cool stance.
agree.
without a manual it was a flop anyway...not desirable.
I liked the older model better.

I agree. I have a gen 1 v10 in manual. Never selling it. Looks amazing to this day still.
"The Audi R8 isn't that much different from the previous gen" "The 2nd gen NSX is too different from the previous gen" both cars have a reputation for having supercar performance without having too much of a flashy appearance. I think I'm starting to see the line.

Not to mention the 2nd gen NSX was the same from 2017 till its death. The 1st gen NSX was the same with minor facelifts from 1990 and no substantial performance upgrades. Yet JDM fanboys love the 1st gen so much that their prices have surpassed the 2nd gen.
"R8/NSX/911 are not flashy cars" Ha!
19:13 It's a 5.2 liter, which is a normal displacement for a V10. Even for a V8 is normal. It's big for a V6.

The car is super underrated compared to its competitors
especially if you look at the price compared to its competitors
It's a german sports car with the heart of a Lamborghini Huracan, packed in a less dramatic and less aggressive shell. It's much more daily drivable than an italian exotic and more special than a Corvette or let's say most AMG and BMW M models.

Doug, raising the rear spoiler is for more than just looks. It allows you to clean the entire spoiler, as well as underneath it. It's also useful for troubleshooting to make sure the spoiler is operating correctly. Also, put the car in neutral, and then the rev limiter goes away.
Also it just looks far better with the spoiler up. I don't understand why he doesn't get it.

Doug, I don't mind hearing that orchestra note when in motion. Great sound either way. Hope to see these start to drop a little more soon. That'll lead to me purchasing one for myself. (: To add to your point about it not being a Huracan. If I needed a Huracan then I'd be looking at one. For a good all around fun car this is such a bargain. Plus that V10!

I’m not against an electric R8 (or EV’s in general), especially seeing as they already exist (and obviously they’re insanely quick), but I feel like the R8 isn’t gonna last long as a purely electric vehicle. This car would be better off as a hybrid.
True, but not a fricking Electric R8.
I feel this car will be ruined as an EV, the main purpose as a simple flagship super car will be gone, but I may be wrong
Like, a Hybrid system with a V10 that also has cylinder cutoff
@@hammer_mercedes The purpose of a flagship super car is to build the fastest and quickest car that brand is capable of making; which for Audi the only way up is EVs.
Everything about electric cars is boring and lame
Reasons why some buyers go R8 and not Huracan are also: 1. price tag 2. practicality (there's no room for tall people in a Huracan) So the R8 is not only about the ''I want a discreet supercar''.
I really like the timeless look of no center screen and wish more companies would do that
I don't agree with Doug on the looks. The second gen is still a looker but the 1st gen V10 models are outright gorgeous automobiles. A somewhat simple, elegant timeless shape that is as attractive today as 15 years ago. To me from a styling standpoint one of the best cars ever designed
I agree, Im not sure what Doug is talking about, I have a 2018 R8 and I live in LA in an area full of super cars and heads are constantly turning to look at my R8
Weird to think that the R8 is a 16 year old car, the 3rd gen R8 could look exactly like the 1st gen R8 and it would still look futuristic.
@@1Interloper out here breaking necks. Good work sir

Doug, your excitement kept me hooked. Thanks man!
Audi should mount the V10 badge on the motor in such a way that when it reflects to the rear windshield, and you view the reflection in the rear view mirror, it is the right way up to be read. It would be a quirk that Doug would surely love.

At first I was going to say I don’t have a problem with the manual seats at all, because it’s not that hard to pull a lever and scoot it wherever you want. But then I remembered on every car I’ve driven with a manual driver seat, I let go of the lever and it either goes forward or back into the notch, and I can never get it exactly where I want it. If this has a mechanism that really lets you position it anywhere, I think that’s fine for people who don’t share the car with another driver.
Watching this video reminds me of the time back in ~2007, when I saw an R8 for the first time. Pulled into the pizza shop i worked at, at the time. Nice old gentleman, was more than happy to show it off to us working grunts. Thanks for the memory jog, Doug.

Great job Doug, gave me critical insight on that car, important everyday functions are a pain in the butt, and that price point, forget the car.👍👍
About the sideblade: I always thought the single sideblade was an amazing part of its design, it gave it some accent and excitement. As for "it doesn't look different enough from the first gen": if it ain't broke, don't fix it. This has been one of those traditionally beautiful cars since its debut, they gave it more "edge" to keep up with modern design, but other than that I don't think anything else should have changed. I even prefer the old design.
I’m still confused on why the R8 is going full electric once they already have the E-TRON GT. The R8 is a staple in the super car industry and for it to go fully electric will not justify that high price tag it will have.
should have a hybrid
Its because of upcoming emission regulations for ICE cars. It will be impossible to keep a NA V10 within new regulations.
@@AcTzGlitcher Doesn't matter if the regulations are to blame or that someone at the government is a cunt that hates cars and takes it up the ass, nobody will waste money on electric R8s, if they can be called that.
The e-tron gt is a 4-door not a 2door
You have the politicians who jump on this “green future” to thank.
The first gen version of the R8 with the gated manual is one of my favorite supercars.
Great video as always. I am again left waiting for Doug to notice a quirk in Audi cars which I find hilarious. If you move the shifter off to the righthand side to put it into manual mode, then go to put it in park, it has a little motor in it that brings it back to center. 99% of Audi owners will never even try to do that because intuition says bring it back to the middle yourself then hit the P button; nonetheless Audi is on it.
Wow! This car looks so cool! And I like seeing you enjoy how powerful cars like these are!
I still remember when the R8 first came out in 2008, it was one of the first cars I truly fell in love with. My family took a trip to Germany that summer, and I saw one parked on the street while walking around Berlin, debut color with the silver and black side blade. I was so giddy, but also super shy to take a picture with it, haha. My dad egged me on to take it though-really wish I could find that picture. I always worried that I'd never get the opportunity to own one by the time I got older. Seeing as the LFA is most definitely out of the question for a while, I hope I can pick one up in a few years. The current gen might not be as special as when the original came out, but to me, this car still has a captivating, magic touch. Super sad to see the V10 go.
I hope you own an R8 one day! 🙏

I can't actually get to believe Audi will go ''fully electric'' on the next R8.... Are you on drugs people from Audi ? Or are you just trying to cash in from a (very) stupid new era ? IMO it is a bit of both....sadly
The R8 should definitely retire as a V10. Going electric is a little bit sad. This car is what it is because of the V10 engine.

An R8 high rev blew past me like 10 years ago on a side street and I’ll never forget that exhaust sound. Thing looked like a space ship too.
No electric car can do that, this is why they will forever suck.
Manual seats make sense to me. Once I get a seat adjusted to me I usually never touch those controls again. Why haul around extra weight? To each their own I suppose.

They just changed small things on the R8s design over the years, because it already looked perfect on the first gen. Anything they change has a high probability to worsen the look. This happened to the head and tail lights in all the following versions. They got edgier and this doesnt work too well with the silhouette. Every new Audi has more edges now. Its really because they cannot improve the original perfect design. For example, the A5s first gen design and the face lift looked amazing, they couldnt improve that. Just change it, more edges now, head lamps and grille edgier, less cool. Its hard to have really cool designs nowadays, because everything already existed. Thats why BMW has to place some giant ass cheeks as a grille on the M4. The R8 still looks cool, though.

Iconic? I didn't even know that they still made these. How iconic could they be? Even when the model was new I wasn't interested. The LFA is a unicorn for sure, but the general population wouldn't even know what it was... I think you are misunderstanding the meaning of the word "Iconic".
Hey Doug R8 better to go hard top or convertible? Great work as always!!
I love how you can see the engine cover’s reflection in the back window 19:17
I honestly like that there is no infotainment on the dash. Will help it become even more of a classic than it already will be.
Noooohhhh! Should've made next R8 a hybrid, not electric. Detune the engine for fuel efficiency/emissions to 550hp or so, driving only rear wheels, throw electric motors on front axle for like 700-750hp combined
Very nice car and love the cooler! More impressive is that you 582289 views in 4 days. Keep it up!
No big screens in the interior to look dated later on, NA V-10, RWD, clean looking outside… I see this appearing on a future Doug video of cars that nobody wanted but now they do and are going up in value.
To be honest Doug, I actually prefer manual seats over powered. I always felt like powered seats are a gimmick, and the motor is expensive to replace should anything go wrong with it.. Also, the time it takes to whir a motorized seat into the desired position, a manual seat would already accomplish that.....not to mention the fact that I'm the only person that drives my vehicles, so I barely have the need to adjust my seats.
I bought my current car in 2008. The last few years my seat gets closer and closer to the steering wheel. I think my legs have gotten shorter 😔🤷🏼♂️.
I honestly had no idea they were still making these.
bro you are my hero!
I still remember seeing my first R8 back in 2008 in the original Iron Man movie. Watching Tony Stark drive that thing around, it really did seem futuristic. What a beautiful car.
Personally, I strongly prefer manual seats over the agonizingly slow and complicated electric ones.
Finally someone who agrees with me.
They are lighter and greener too! No motors or battery power required
@@kazitaufiqiqbal1194 one less electric motor that can fail.
