4:12 that drift must be one of the most epic things I've ever seen. The whole composition with the R8 in front and everything is just perfect.
+Stryke It's probably the most perfect shot in all of Top Gear. You have the R8 in a straight line in-focus, then here comes the wild, maniacal 911 swinging wide behind it to try to ruin its day, the focus then blurs the R8 and settles on the 911. Things are about to go down. If I were a movie director of car chases, I would be constantly using that shot. It's an absolute masterpiece.

It does not look anywhere near the same though, the 911 has changed as well but not as much and the Porsche was always the better looking car.

The Porsche has basically been the same for 30 years but the Audi does NOT look anywhere near the same today. That's not to even mention the engine in those cars. The Porsche has the boxer six, as it had since it was first introduced in 1963 while the new Audi has nothing what so ever in common with that version, nothing at all, not a single thing. Jesus Christ you couldn't be more wrong if you took a lifetime of trying.

100% I love the 2011 version. The 2016 one looks like an old lizard whose vomited it's insides out through it's hideous protruding grille. Plus they removed that rear 'panel-wing'. That's a big nono to remove a design quirk like like, a piece of soul really!

it did pioneer LED running lights which everyone copied. edit: personally I like all the R8s including the Le Mans Quattro concept. my personal favorite being the late model first gen R8 V10 with the 6-speed.

Nothing really beats a 911 at the end of the day but the original R8 will forever be iconic. Truly two of the most memorable cars here

Around 2008 they made a concept vehicle with a 6.0 liter V12 TDI. 500 HP, 740 torque. Would love to see that as a final product!

@@LonesomeDrifter1987 no, it was used in the r10 for the lemans but not in the road going r8. The car that got the v12 tdi was the q7, but the engine in it shared only a few parts with the r10.

Completely fell in love with the current 991 generation - in my opinion it is the best 911 so far. I never used to like porsche 911s but the current ones (well actually the ones before the turbo charged engines) are just amazing.

2:40 Zero to sixty in 4.6 seconds... and the new BMW M340i, which is just a slightly beefed up sedan and not even an M3, does it in 4.2 seconds. Cars really came a long way in the last 10 years. Regular saloons are outdoing former supercars in some regards.

I agree. A normal Audi A6 3.0 will outperform an old 911 or R8 at the highway. However, it is still much more fun to cruise in a 911 or R8 than in a fast limousine or estate car

NoStressCrossfire NO they aint. The old ones arent balanced and the new ones are for control freaks and geeks. The 996 is the best looking ever. Not a beetle for once. The 991 is such a fake car, having 4 wheel steering, electronic power steering, dsg clutch (so has the 997), ugly rear lights, 2000 suspension settings, dumbass gismos, a true nerdfest. NOT a proper Porsche. The 996 is beautiful and the most fun porsche to drive. Not to mention more reliable and sounds god like. It handles fabulously and pure on instinct. A REAL porsche, that communicates with you.

I drive an R8 V8. Sure it is not the fastest car on the market. But with the sport exhausts it sounds fantastic nd it handles fantastic. It is also easy to live with an can be used as a daily driver both summer and winter without a problem. I also think it is beautiful which off cause is subjective. When I want more power, if I ever will, I supercharge it.

I remembered watching this on BBC late at night with everyone already tucked away in bed... When that 997 drifted into the scene, i jumped, screamed and yelled as if my favorite team scored a winning Champions League Final Goal. Back when Top Gear was Top Gear.

Just bought an '08 R8, and I absolutely love it. It's had a magnesium exhaust put on it, it's a rare color, and that manual gearbox is silky smooth.

The v10 r8 is an absolute monster. Hammond would’ve been gone in the dust if they had‘ve had the v10 version at this time
Well, then they would have compared it to the 991 Turbo as they are at the same price range and the results would be the same as here again.
For sure, but it then would not have been a fair comparison 😉. You'd have to take a 911 turbo and trust me on this... The 997 turbo is absolutely bonkers! And I doubt very much the R8 V10 would beat it on the track!

He's disturbed that a single vehicle was able to impress him as much as the R8 could, and was reluctant to express his admiration for the Audi as that is not often his convention.
