Demolition HIDDEN DISCOVERY and Recreating 18th Century Paneling - Journey to the Château, Ep. 175
In this week's Friday episode, Patrick and Stuart begin the renovation of the water closet for their guest room with the demolition. They take everything out of the room, and John the electrician stops by to help open up and take out part of the plaster ceiling for new electrics with a hidden discovery. Stuart creates paneling for the new entrance that will match their original 18th century paneling, and Patrick finishes it off with sealing, priming and painting.

Stuart, that was amazing. It's unreal the way a plane wall can turn into something fancy. Patrick, your paint job helped to bring it to life
Thank you so much. Stuart is amazing! ❤❤
Stuart, you did a great job with the paneling and Patrick with the painting. Your love for this chateau shows in every video. ❤
That is so nice of you to say. Thank you very much indeed. ❤
The panelling is gorgeous and looks like it has always been there.
Thank you so much. That is a great compliment and it truly feels like it belongs. Hugs. ❤
Stuart, I am in awe of your wood working skills. Between the two of you, you make everything beautiful.
Stuart is very amazing!! He never makes a mistake in cutting with his saw and router.🎉
Stuart is truly fantastic and when it comes to woodwork, only a professional can match him. And together, we truly are lucky. And then there are Tony and John….. we are almost covered! 😊😅😂. Huge thank you ❤❤
@@boessheila50he truly is. ❤
I love how you share the work. Each of you plays to his strengths.
Thank you so much. You are a fantastic observer. Huge hugs ❤
Funny you should mention The Holiday Inn. That's one of the reasons I love your blog so much. I started watching another blog, and when they started renovating their guest rooms, all I could think of was that they looked like a Holiday Inn. They kept adding ultra modern lights and things in their beautiful old chateau, and modern furniture. All I could think of was that staying there would be like staying at a Holiday Inn. Even when you "modernized" your kitchen, you still made it look like a chateau.
Love this comment! Thank you so much! ❤️
Thank you so very much Kathi. What an amazing comment. We are deeply committed to stay true to the chateau and it’s period with a liveable twist. I don’t love a Morden chateau where the charm is removed. We stayed in one 4 years ago….. You made my weekend. Huge hugs ❤❤❤
The paneling does bring this little room together… and what wonderful woodwork lies beneath. It was a treat watching the bones of the chateau, that have been so beautifully crafted. And the score for this episode was simply a delight! 👏
Thank you so much. The bones of the chateau are truly amazing. And all those details that we are discovering. Hugs ❤
dittio!
Hello Everyone, hope you are all looking forward to this as much as I am. 😘🇨🇮
😘😘😘. Hugs darling❤
Modernise but preserve the beautiful old details. Gosh what a delight to find . Beautiful wood work. Progress. Good job .
Isn’t that woodwork just fantastic? We will see it every time when we get new bed linens. 😊. Thank you so much ❤
Cutting 45s is a great talent! Amazing work boys.
Thank you so much Mark. The one thing I cannot do is compound angles….. 😱😡😭. 😂😂😂. Absolutely true. That is all Stuart. Happy weekend to you two. ❤
Absolutely love watching you both. The beautiful result of your craftmanship and talents is amazing. Thankyou Stuart and Patrick.
thank you! ❤️
You are so kind Frances. Thank you very much. ❤😊❤
Stuart's panelling is perfectly laid out, and Patrick's finishing touches make it all so beautiful. Colours are lovely!
Thanks so much! 😊
You are so kind. Stuart’s paneling looks so authentic, it is unreal. Huge hugs ❤
The new entrance is gorgeous, and I love seeing the bones of chateau's, the workmanship of the time is beautiful.
Stuart you did a beautiful job of the panelling absolute perfection and Patrick wonderful job of the caulking and painting. Glorious guys. I love watching your videos ❤
Its great to see how you guys work together and your skills complement each other. 😻❤️
Thank you so very much ❤❤❤
You did a wonderful job on the paneling looks like it could have been there for ever, great work Patrick and Stuart.take care and see you both soon 💕🌼🤗
Thank you Carol. It truly looks authentic. Stuart is very talented. Hugs and love from Colombe ❤
Hi Patrick and Stuart, If I did not watch you both create the look of period paneling around the door frame I never would have believed it. It is amazing what a few pieces of trim and moldings can do to the entrance to the ensuite. You too are so creative, determined and able to make it all happen and look great in the end. Once again, great work and attention to detail. Mark & Scott
I can’t get over how clean & professional that paneling work looks! I also like seeing that beautiful bedroom wallpaper again in some background shots. I’m crazy about it!
The panelling is beautiful Stuart! Also like the video editing of the production and installation. I’m loving those colours Patrick. Contemporary, but traditional at the same time. You’re both doing a wonderful job bringing life - and beauty, back into the chateau.💕
Thank you for your amazing comment Elizabeth. Huge hugs ❤
Hi sweeties. Had a great time 💃. You both work so well together. Stuart working his magic with the panels and Patrick with the finishing touch. 👌. I did't even know there was a staircase in the maides room. I looked into the room but did't see it. 😮. I hope you have a fun activity to take some time off to enjoy. Great weekend. Hugs and kisses also for the furries 🥰😘😊🐕
So glad that you had a great time dancing ❤❤. We are making progress. We have one outing for the weekend, other than that, we work. 😮😅😊. Hugs sweetie
You asked for comments, so here I go. The music beautiful as always. The demolition was very interesting as it showed a hiding side of the walls that once were exposed. I love to hear the "before" renovation findings. And the final result: stunning. You are so right that renovations have to look at if they were done long time ago not today. It adds character to the building that has already a lot of that. It is always so nice to watch your videos at the end of my working week (at Home Depot) . One more project accomplished. Take care and have a wonderful weekend both of you and the dogs. ❤
Thank you! 😊
I am so glad I asked for comments! Thank you for your input, feedback and kindness. Very kind of you indeed. We loved Home Deport in the US and here we go to Brico Depot (almost the entire store looks like we are in the US. Except the prices….. 😮😮😮😮😂. We try to make our renovations look like a part of the chateau, not a new addition. Huge hugs and thanks from Colombe ❤❤
@@patrickjourneytothechateau9452 Thank you to both of you for sharing your journey ( how appropriate the name of your channel!) to restore such a beautiful chateau. I am glad you have a store like Home Depot to buy what you need for the restoration. I am in Southern California. Life here is very expensive. I am looking forward to see the next projects you have for the Chateau. Have a great week!
The music played when the big saws were filmed made me grin. Very good. 😁 Great work on the doorway!
Stuart is such a perfectionist with his woodworking skills. All the moulding pieces fit together with furniture-making quality. And Patrick, bravo on the painting. I really like the Little Greene grey(s) you chose. 🤩
Thank you so very much. We are a really good team. Stuart and woodwork, or anything that needs precision…. Fantastic! I’m better at the rough stuff. 😂😂😂. Little Greene has lovely paint and we need the calm, pastels of the 18th century. Love it. Huge ❤❤
The paneling turned out wonderful. It does look like it’s been there forever 🫶🇨🇦
Fabulous! I especially love watching the creation, installation and painting of the woodwork. Just amazing!
I'm watching that again just to Mozart again!
Kudos to you Stuart for being on the ladder without having the door open. Way too much an edge for me! Beautifully done, you make a good team.
Thank you so very much. ❤❤❤. Love your comment 😊
That old woodwork was a wonderful find. Stuart, you always do a great job making paneling. Patrick, you are a great painter. You both together make up the dream team. It was lovely to see you both on Jane's channel today. I hope you get some R&R over the weekend. Spring definitely feels like it is here. Too bad I have no energy to get out at the garden. I am still trying to get over that flu. I have COPD, and while I take prednisone for flare-up, I feel less short of breath and have lots of energy. I don't stay on them because they are hard on the body, and I only recently started them. I made a lovely homemade apple pie tonight. Join us for tea tomorrow. I wish! Take care and as always love to you all and the fur babies. I am fur baby withdrawal.❤
My dear Peter. What a lovely invitation. I wish we could 😊😊😊😊 We loved this project and are almost finished and are starting three more……. Or four. We did get a few hours out and about today. It was lovely. I got Prednisone for my deep bronchitis and it helped a lot. Hope you won’t have many serious flare ups. Love and hugs fr9m us at Colombe ❤❤
What a wonderful discovery! It’s always lovely to know some of the secrets of the past. Well done.
Great job both of you , how interesting about under the stairs.😮 .. the door looks awesome the extra touches with the wood do let it remain true to the Chateau 😊 hello babies 🐕❤
Love the panelling another great job Stuart ❤❤
The panelling and painting are so professionally done Patrick and Stuart!
Thank you so much. That is so kind of you 😊
I really love the paneling and how well it marries into the rest of the wood work and decor. So well done!
Stuart you’re so good at making the paneling. You make it look so easy but I know it’s not. Patrick, you have mastered caulking, and painting the different tones on the paneling, moldings and doors. Great teamwork. What a wonderful find above the ceiling. That’s why I love old buildings, besides their beauty there are secrets to be discovered and when you do, it’s thrilling. You are making this old chateau proud. Many hugs! xx
Thanks so much 💕
Dearest Stephanie. Stuart is quite a wizard with paneling an woodwork I enjoy finishing the paneling. There is more to come. A whole room will be panelled…… 😮😊. The secrets of old buildings are a gift they give sparingly but when given, it’s fantastic! Sending love and hugs from Colombe ❤❤

Good morning P & S, another part of the project done and finished off completely. The big reveal was stunning. It would not surprise me to hear there is still a faint scent of the wood even though it has been there for 400 years, it has been very well preserved. That should not be covered up but on show to see and appreciate the chateaux even more. Looking forward to next week's episode, are you doing something nice/special for Valentine's Day, Tony and Jane deserve such as they worked very hard to finish off the bridal suite. They also did very well. Thanks for sharing all the detailed work I take my hat off to you as renovating is not easy. Do take care, keep snug until at least April. Kind regards, Elize.
The two toned paint is lovely! Nice work Patrick and Stuart!
Gentlemen, what a wonderful finish and it looks beautiful and fresh. You work so well together as a team. You have done so much already, its always exciting and inspiring. Its Sunday here in Melbourne and its lovely to sit quietly with a cup of tea and be drawn into a wonderful world. 😘😘
Stewart, you've made a nice amount of sawdust by making the panneling ( very nice). You can use the sawdust on the compost heap, for the plants. But also you can make youre own woodfiller. Just add woodglue to the sawdust and a bit water. Mix it together and the holes can be filled. So save a bit of dust in a jar and the rest is for the garden. You did an awesome job Patrick on the painting.
Love the suggestion. We used it on compost but we need wood filler. Fantastic. Hugs. ❤😊
Wow ❤ gorgeous ! Love the door latch as well ❤ well done. I so enjoy the progress you are making in breathing new life into the chateau ❤❤❤❤
I LOVE those panels. It's hard to believe that it's "removeable". I hope no-one does, to be honest. And it is a tragedy to think of those beautiful carvings covered up, simply because the pervailing thought in the past deemed them too good for the eyes of a servant.
So beautiful, your care and thoughtful process makes such a difference! The Chateau is smiling! xox a bientot!
What a fascinating discovery you made. You are truly bringing Colombe back to life. The panelling and painting are nothing short of perfection. How I laughed Patrick when you said you didn’t want the vestibule to resemble a Holiday Inn, honestly I don’t think you could ever manage such a look. You are too talented, too conscientious in your renovations and have too much style to ever let that happen. It was funny though. Take care xx
Very nice so far. The paneling appears well worth all the effort to create. Looking forward to your ideas for the bathroom.
The paneling is beautiful. I just love it. Great job Stuart!
❤😊❤. Me too
I'd been admiring the matching panel by the side of the door entrance to the bnb in the introduction, watching Stuart making it later in the video .... wow
Thank you. It is amazing what one can do to recreate 18th century paneling. It takes research, a lot of work but it pays off. Hugs❤
Happy to leave comments! Love door and surround and handle is beautiful just loving the progress well done see your update next week xx
By the way Stuart you did great with the moldings 😊
Great work on the panels Stuart.
I like watching you two work. It’s clear you have done all of this before! I can hardly wait to see the finished suite.
I love the paneling and the two tone paint!!🌸💮🌻🌹🌺💐🌷🌼🏵
Looks like the entrance has always been in place. Impeccable design and execution❤
Stuart the panelling is brilliant x
Love that door it looks like it’s always been there.
Thank you. ThT is such a huge compliment. Hugs😊
Looks great guys. Happy Valentine's Day to y'all.
Great discovery!❤ I love the new paneling. It looks great.
🏰 Loved seeing the discovery of the ancient staircase. It will be so interesting as your reno continues and other delights are uncovered. Kudos to Patrick for demolishing that bathroom floor bare handed. 😅 I'd have been wearing a hazmat suit! Ha!
Love the panelling and especially love the gold handle on the door
Wow, lots of great workmanship guys. This looks superb. Well done and your interesting find was intriguing. Thank you.
Thank you ❤. We enjoyed the progress and loved the discovery. Huge hug
Wow, the panelling looks just great. You are a wonderful team. CH
What an incredible discovery with the old stairs. I have a feeling you all are going to make more interesting discoveries like that. The new paneling turned out great ! 😃
I look forward so much to a tour of the whole bed and breakfast suite - including the room we can glimpse through a doorway on the other side of the main room. Perhaps one of your excellent layout reminders?
I have watched your videos from the beginning but have never commented. I am getting over my shyness, haha. I just wanted to say I like how you explain everything so well and how you sit in different locations each time. You are both such hard workers and talented.
Thank you! 💕
Happy Friday Verena. Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. It is always wonderful for us to read the comments and suggestions, especially from people who have been with us from the beginning and who have a grasp of who we are and what we try to achieve. Hugs from us at Colombe ❤❤
You should be happy with yourselves, the changes are amazing. 👀 looking forward to the finished room.
Thank you. I so enjoyed the music and activity pairing of John's demolition and the 3rd movement of the Moonlight. There was a point that even the head nods were in sync with the tempo. This is one of my favorite pieces to play when i want to send the world off to kick rocks. Great to release anger, and for a while when I play it i am going to visualize john pulling plaster & lath! And giggle.
How interesting to see what was up in the ceiling under the staircase. Helps us to see and understand how people lived there so many centuries ago. ❤
Hello to both of you. I have nothing to complain about, it is a perfect integration of this small extension to integrate amenities. Bravo also for the idea of surrounding your beautiful 18th century door with false paneling, which harmonizes so well with the authentic ones. Everything is remarkably well-thought-out. I wonder if you already have a decorating idea for your entrance hall and your beautiful stairwell?
Great job as usual ! Looking at the wood discovery and to know the beams are there for hundreds of years it’s amazing to me . That’s why I’m glad Notre Dame is rebuilt as the original was
I haven’t been able to watch lately. I’ve been binge watching. Everything looks wonderful!❤
Loving the work you carried out recreating the panels. Team work 😊
This was such an enjoyable video - Mozart and Beethoven guiding you along. The music matched your actions perfectly! What a beautiful entrance you created! Great work both of you! 🤗🤗
The panels look fantastic! Enjoyed the information regarding the stairs!
Hello Patric and Stuart . What a fabulous door and the molding all around and the painting looks so lovely. Well done you guys. So beautiful 😍
Great job on the paneling Stuart.
Panelling makes it - great work. Thanks for sharing.
The panelling looks excellent, really well crafted
Wow! You two did an amazing job making the paneling. You are an expert with power tools! At 77 years old, I can’t even handle a remote control!!😂❤😂
😂😂💕💕
I was so happy to get to the lives . I missed being with you. I think you both are doing a magnificent job. I can’t wait to see how your staircase closet turns out . The beans look like they need some conditioning and wax. But they are gonna be beautiful. Stuart each time I see in any frame the wall paper you created I love it more and more. As always Love you both ❤❤❤❤
Deconstruction the closet was so interesting and finding the carved woodwork that had been covered up.
Wasn’t that amazing? I love finding these details that were covered up for centuries! Hugs 😊
You are doing a great job guys .Thank you for a good vlog again tonight .
At the beginning of the episode, when the camera was panning across the new entrance, I thought to myself gosh what a beautiful door and paneling. How lucky are they to still have such amazing details in the chateau. Boy howdy what a surprise when I watched Stewart build out the paneling from scratch! You both have such amazing DIY skills with a keen eye for restoration and a balanced viewpoint to modernization. Oh yes, as always, your musical selections are always well thought out too, a real win-win episode for this viewer. Best to both of you from a semi-sunny California.
Thank you so much! ❤️
I hope you don’t have too much rain in southern CA! Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. Research and details made this come together. Huge hugs from us ❤
You’re doing such a good job and have such a vision for restoration of this particular beautiful place.
Thank you so much ❤❤❤
Beautiful work on door and surround! Looks like it was made that way! Stunning! Keep it up! 👍
Hope the new discovery is a pleasant surprise.
😊❤😊. I was glad it was. ❤❤🎉🎉
You guys did a great job, team work makes the dream work. Hi Ginger. Hugs and stay well.
I love your comment Ina. Ginger send her love too 💕💖😊
Stuart, the paneling matches the original superbly, great job. Patrick the sanding and finishing touches along with the paint look amazing. You’re a great team. I hope you both take some time this weekend to do something fun together, which excludes any renovation. Take care my friends, Ralph Rocchiccioli
Salût Ralph. Thank you so much. We enjoy having a few rooms that are coming together. I think you are right, we do make a good team. Sending you love from Colombe ❤
I’m loving the greys on the doors and paneling
Isn’t it amazing? It was the gray used for Queen Marie Antoinette in the Petit Trianon Palace. Huge hugs ❤😊
Stewart, I always wondered how I could create panelling. Thank you for teaching me this skill. You guys are doing a great job!
Isn’t it amazing? Stuart does a lot of research and then his creativity goes into high gear. I’m always amazed ❤. Thank you for your comment
Patrick, Ich bin halb Deutsch. Ich bin in Wiesbaden aufgewachsen. Mein Vater war in der US Luftwaffe. Ich freue mich immer wann Du Deutsch schprechts. Sorry if my writing is bad. I went to DoD schools in Wiesbaden and had to learn to write German on my own. Both of you are amazing. @@patrickjourneytothechateau9452
The painting and trim work look awesome!
Beautiful work young men. You make a great team. Can’t wait for your next video meantime trying to catch up on previous posts. Patrick I am so pleased to see you are human and that the gorgeous dog of Terry Tracy and Ash doesn’t post comments.🤣🤣thousand apologies it’s an age thing❤

You two are doing a fab job..!!! 🌹🇬🇧
The paneling / done look AMAZING! The slightly ominous music during the cutting of the wood pieces for the paneling is a cool touch. Fantastic attention to detail gents.
Tammie, that is such a great comment. Thank you ❤❤❤
The paneling looks great! I hope you took pictures of the stair area. It would be nice to see what is behind the walls when you complete the remodel
Love the vestibule. It’s amazing what you can do when you think about it properly. Gorgeous!❤
