RESTORING 400 Year Old Plaster Walls in Our CHATEAU Entrance Hall - Journey to the Château, Ep. 191

2024 ж. 4 Сәу.
21 458 Рет қаралды

In this week's Friday episode, Patrick and Stuart work on the restoration of the walls of the chateau entrance hall and grand staircase. When the wallpaper had been previously removed, it exposed crumbling and damaged walls which resulted in a plaster disaster. After a long wait with no sign of anyone who can help, Patrick decides to take on the additional role of plasterer. Patrick and Stuart also have a visit from Stephen and Sara from Château de Saint-Germain-des-Prés @ManorandMaker who continue the Chateau Swap by delivering furniture from Lalande, and then receiving furniture given to them by Patrick and Stuart.

The Chatelaine swap was a great event I see, everyone got what they needed and off loaded less useful items. Wish we could do that here. Mark & Scott

Stuart, you must be a wreck filming Patrick on high latters... time for that scaffolding. I love those châteaux swap sessions. Everyone benefits. Rain...rain...rain... I know how you feel since we've been drenched here, too, in Philadelphia. But, today, we got a shock... a 4.8 earthquake radiating out from the epicenter in New Jersey. Fortunately, it was just all rumblings and no damages.

Your house was completed in the United States, where you could have enjoyed a perfect home by relaxing and having parties, sipping cocktails and eating bon bons! • Patrick what a difference your plastering has made. Yes there is more to do but it will be that way for years to come. It's a process, just chipping away a bit at a time. Besides you don't want to get board like you got with your home in the States. Seeing the before and after shots are quite something. It's a shame you couldn't find a smaller paint roller LOL. Hugs to all and stay well.

  • Hallways and staircases are so daunting to decorate. It really puts people off, mostly because we don’t know where to start. Biting the bullet is the hardest fest part. But, oh boy! It’s so satisfying when you start seeing that you’re capable of doing it yourself! The change that happens with just your two hands. At the end of process, when you look back you’ll think “I did that!” Yes it was hard work, but it wasn’t difficult. Once the hallway and stairs are complete, you can step back and feel proud that you stepped up and pushed through and did the perfect job. Donna was right to ‘push’ you into doing it. Be proud! Between you and Stuart, the chateau will be perfect. 👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  • Good morning Patrick & Stuart, At the end of the day, you want something done, do it yourself! Yes, I know it is daunting at the start, just get over your mental feelings and go for it. Plan your project and get started. A qualified plasterer, would they have done a better job, I do not think so, it could have been worse. Now you know, it is done properly and it looks great. If you don't know about the previous mess, you would never imagine the mess it was. It is the same everywhere, has any person bought a property that was flawless? Debateable for sure. We are getting good rains, we had a horrible unbelievable hot dry summer, now that the pressure system is changing, it is wonderful to receive the rains, some are getting up to a 100 mls. There will be flooding, but they are warned in advance and they must make the necessary arrangements. We have some sunshine hours, then things dry out, and I am removing all my violet plants as they just hoard slugs and snails and blocking the paving, so they must go after many years of frustration. I bought some Bubiana bulbs to go into a clay pot, I think they will do well and show off their lovely colours, they are amazing. I wanted just one packet of daffodils but they only had the new hybrids, I will shop somewhere else. I loved the video, just keep going, you can take breaks at intervals afterwards. Do take care on those stairs, if the scaffolding is stable, you should be safe. Happy days, kind regards, take care, Elize.

  • Great job, Patrick! The chateau swap is such a good thing! It is not only practical in the physical sense, but it builds the ties in your community of chatelains / chatelaines. Also, building relationships with your local merchants is universally a good idea, but in France it may be almost essential. It often seems that is just how things get done. (No judgement, just an observation.)

    @lawrencebaker2318@lawrencebaker2318Ай бұрын
    • Yes, and we do support local merchants as much as possible. It is the local tradesmen that make it difficult to support because it often takes years to schedule you in and for them to get a job done.

  • Nothing worse than blown plaster, apart from the mess on your hands but you don’t know how much damage is actually there until you start working the area. Sometimes you luck out and the job is small, but on other occasions it’s huge. You did an amazing job considering your learning as you go, on a lot of work coming your way, or self taught as you said with your sewing. ❤
