Mat’s got his hands on EVERY generation of the all-American sports car - the Viper!
From the 1992 1st generation through to the 2013 5th generation, Mat’s going to put each of these RWD supercars through their paces. He’ll start by asking each owner why they chose their car, after which he’ll launch them from 0-60mph and take them for a drive!
They’re all powered by naturally aspirated V10s, and as expected the performance and power increase slightly with each generation. So here’s how they compare:
Gen 1: 8-litre NA V10: 406hp & 626Nm
Gen 2: 8-litre NA V10: 460hp & 660Nm
Gen 3: 8.3-litre NA V10: 505hp & 710Nm
Gen 4: 8.4-litre NA V10: 610hp & 760Nm
Gen 5: 8.4-litre NA V10: 650hp & 810Nm
So which will come out on top. Will he choose the classic gen 1? The all-new gen 5? There’s only one way to find out… Stick with Mat for this all-new supercar comparison!

  • The 2003 Viper does 60mph in first before the limiter but you were changing gear at 58mph and that’s why the time was so far off the claimed 0-60.

The elevation of this area is around 3000-4000ft. You can't compare these tests to those done at Sea Level... NA cars lose power at altitude.

  • I drove one of these built as a S-GT class trans am car for one lap on Laguna Seca on a track day. I had my old mk2 VW GTI cup car in the paddock and the viper driver mentioned he'd had a base model mk1 rabbit as a kid... and asked if he Could take my car around a couple times. I jokingly said sure, if you'll let me have a go in yours (i was TOTALLY joking... i mean two of his TIRES cost more than my car when i bought it, lol.) And then tossed him my key. He went out and put in 4 laps, and came back grinning like a kid. "Its like a gocart! I gotta get one of these! You just stay in it and just railsthat around. I bearly had to lift, let alone brake" And then he says. Mine don't have a key. Go get buckled in and i'll run you through the start sequence. So, I hopped in he started it up and i took her round. It was the most raw, brutal exerience I've ever experienced in a car. That thing SCARED me. and I barely got into it. I mean this was a prepped GT car - it was worth more than my frigging house - so i wasn't gonna hot dog it.. but i couldnt have even if i had the balls and the bankroll to do so. I can drive. I mean im nothing special but i can drive. And that thing was way beyond my skill level to drive at anything close to its full potential. The thing WANTS to kill you. I've never driven a street legal viper, but if its even half of what that GT car was... WTF?!

I do love the 2nd gen's GTS, but i got a thing for roadsters, and the sidepipes are so sexy. As much as i love the 5th gen GTS, I gotta give it to the one i fell head-over-heals for, that 1st gen RT-10. The Viper is what got me into cars, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.

    • Yeah. My normal shifts in daily driving are probably 600-900ms. Because I ain’t racing and it’s nicer to the clutch. Same for taking off, i tend to use the minimum amount of slip possible, specially when I’m by my lonesome and don’t have anyone else to bother with the lazy shifts. I’ve only used launch control and sidestepped the clutch like 10 times of the 60,000 miles I have in the car. I expect to get near 100k miles out of the clutch. Even when I’m at Road America or Autobahn, I completely release the clutch between shifts since it’s only HDPE and not truly racing. It’s really only at the drag strip that I’ll sidestep and flat foot shift the car. I’ve done a 13.1 @ 106 stock. So close to 12s.

  • The only role Lamborghini had on the V10 motor was to show the engineers how to "cast" the engine. The block itself is engineered much like an old school small block Chrysler/Dodge v8 engine. All the engineering of the engine is ALL Chrysler/Dodge, only the casting related water jackets were Lamborghini's doing. These V10s are the most robust V10s ever produced. A 2v per cylinder over-head-valve design is simplistic, easy to maintain, and will produce gobs more torque than any flat-plane crank motor design. I think it is also good to note that these engines are one of the most reliable stroked out motors available. I love how this video allows us to witness the Viper slowly refining throughout the years.

  • As far as looks go Gen 2 is one of the most timeless car designs I've ever seen. The RT/10 was awesome but the flaws were apparent from the get-go. It seems like a test-run for the GTS. The GTS fixed a lot of those issues and made it a complete vehicle. Compared to other vehicles of the time such as the C4/C5 Corvette, Mustang 4/5, and later on Z06/WS-6. The Viper is just special. I think it looks more exotic and aggressive than other standouts of the era such as the Supra, NSX, GT-3000 VR4, Rx-7. It's up there with a F50 in terms of aesthetics. I'd rank it above a Diablo in purely looks. As far as American cars go, The Prowler aged well and holds up, but people never got over the V-6. Kind of like the XJ-220 which is a masterpiece as well in looks.
