Housing inmates in jails and prisons comes at a high price. Marie Collins discusses challenges present in the criminal justice system and programs that help rehabilitate inmates and lower rates of recidivism.
Marie L. Collins, LPC, LMFT, LAC, is the Treatment Programs Manager for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office. Since she began working there in 2006, she has played an integral part in assessing, analyzing, and improving the treatment programs for both the offender and general population of Acadiana. In collaboration with other Sheriff's office personnel and key community stakeholders, Marie has helped to increase programs and services while successfully decreasing recidivism. She earned a Master in Counseling from Louisiana State University in 2003 and has worked in treatment facilities for over 15 years.

  • Prisoners coming out of jail and prison need to learn skills to make money. I am willing to teach them and have a heavy heart because I was once a prisoner coming out of jail with no skills. 15 year skilled carpenter.

  • I'm a life coach for kids who now works as a prison volunteer in a state penitentiary housing 1100 male felons.Apparently, I'm the community being proactive-I liked hearing that. Also, "I didn't want to meet you here, but I can help you while you're here." For the record, ha ha, Every Wednesday I teach Coloring Therapy for the Soul and facilitate a book club in the character-based dorm, and mentor a Toastmaster prison club in the chapel. I'm also looking forward to facilitating a WhyTry? program in the dorm for the "rowdy" inmates. Apparently, they are rowdy because their dorm isn't getting any programming at this time. They are too rowdy! HA Pray for me, I'm going in! WhyTry is resilience training for the real world, by the way.

    • and we need to discuss victimizing for profit...the jail is no place for an addict nor mentally ill [ or both] and criminal activity which on drugs is a matter for common law not administrative.............the young adults now are increasing not being given treatment but probation so the longer is it, the hope is they will slip up and go through it all over again, fines, fees, jail, and on and on....

  • Enough is enough Arizona department of corrections needs desperate help because there is no transparency or accountability officers and inmates are suffering because of the head that do not change what needs to be changed they need to get those out and get people that are going to make a change or a difference for the battle of the officers and for the better of the inmates. Keeping the Arizona Department of corrections under denial that anything is wrong it’s not serving the people of Arizona they’re just milking the system and doing whatever. The Arizona department of corrections now has become a place of regret for the officers a place of inhumane treatment for the prisoners We are now in 2023 we should be on this we should be better than this we should have all areas covered it’s a shame that we’re still like in the 1950s this Hass to stop get those who are corrupt out of the system and get somebody who is passionate is to help people and we ability those who need rehabilitation also to separate the lifers from those who are just doing time for a few years and the LGBT need their own correctional facility because they get a lot of abuse and heinous treatment enough is enough humanity needs to be repaired and rehabilitated this type of hurt should not be happening anymore this type of negligence of not paying your officers A sustainable amount to make it in this life this Hass to change enough is enough with everybody pocketing money for their own agendas and hurting inmates while they’re doing it they don’t care to listen to the kites or tank orders they don’t care to stop a fight or to save lives or to even rehabilitate lives these wardens these top keepers are just turning their face and doing whatever which leaves the officers in limbo. We need people manning the phone line for the friends and family help and we need people that don’t just pass around from agent to agent from department department like they don’t know how to answer one simple question it is ridiculous this is not working for” “ WE THE PEOPLE !” Wardens directors are not above the law they need a third per person party to come in and review and overlook the charges that are coming in review body cameras review everything through third party enough for the south run bogus for Furnari that goes on and on. Like Hector bravo said stop the buffoonery.

  • We need more groups like this all over the country and need to change our laws for jobs to allow people who "pay their debt to society" to actually get a real job to restart their lives a new. Cause the system forces certain individuals who commit crimes to barely be able to ever get a job outside fast food if they are lucky even for that. Some can't even be able to live in a good enough apartment complex because they have a record or a label.
