The Body Revolution We Need: Function over Form | Tiffany Stewart | TEDxLSU

If our bodies aren’t functional, does it matter what we look like? Many times, when we talk about getting healthy we’re really using coded language to discuss something else - looking healthy. Clinical psychologist Tiffany Stewart takes us through the process of revolutionizing how we think about ourselves when it really matters - when the health of our bodies is on the line.
Body perception matters, which is why Dr. Tiffany Stewart, an LSU graduate with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, has devoted most of her career to research on how we view bodies as they relate to performance. Her work is leading a movement to focus beyond simple appearance notions to functional health. More than 10 years as a competitive gymnast helped spark Tiffany’s interest in behavioral medicine research, which she later combined with a love for technology. As the director of the Behavior Technology Laboratory at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Tiffany works to break the illusion of a perfect human form with apps and games that aim to improve health and performance. She takes cues from soldiers and athletes about what an “ideal” body really is and collaborates with local and national organizations to explore and illuminate the idea that a body’s idealized form and actual function are not always one and the same

  • This is out of this world. I stumbled upon something with a similar message, and it was absolutely astonishing. "Your Body Your Temple" by Sophia Wintergreen

  • Thank you for saying it out loud! Our bodies don't respond the same to healthy behavior, or exercise habits. I have said it a million times and no one believes me because the focus is on appearance and not function. What an exceptional presentation! Thank you!

  • I've been struggling with body image my entire life.... 2 years ago I started to work on improving the way I view my body and trying to focus on what I can do and appreciating the things it has accomplished in the sport I do.. but so far I haven't been able to shift my perspective and am still bashing myself for not looking "good" thank you for this talk! I hope some day everyone can appreciate their bodies for what they do instead of what they look like

  • This talk is so underrated, it's baffling. I never really worked out much other than my abs and biceps because that was what I always wanted to "tone". But it's so true that thinking about health before appearance not only increases satisfaction with healthy initiatives but also makes you a genuinely better functioning being (not just one who looks like it). People who "look healthy" may in fact be on unhealthy diets / injecting themselves and that's the opposite of healthy. So function over appearance for sure. Also function lasts, appearance doesn't. So many good points. Sharing this video because this msg needs to spread.

  • Appearance doesn't seem the most important thing. Working out and eating habits build a healthy and happy life, which is the top-one thing.

    • So why do people feel the need to upload their work out on social media? And post pictures after their work out saying “Work out done”.

  • There is more than enough Science to indicate that there are many factors that need to be addressed in order to have the body 'nature intended.' Above all of these is a healthy gut. If that is not the first port of call then don't bother (with rational expectations.) Food has become an emotional issue, a cultural demand, a distraction. If you eat to fuel the day you want to have then you will be healthy and 'look good.' For any other reason surrender to your fate. Or you can fight back. Fight.
