Reducing recidivism rates in the United States, requires giving second chances to Justice Involved Individuals (also known as Restored Citizens). These second chances must be extended by offering education, employment, and housing opportunities to individuals that may have a criminal background but have paid their debt back to society. Valerie shares practical knowledge and experience regarding advocacy work to restore this forgotten population and our communities as a whole. Valerie L. Hawes is a Global Learning & Development Professional. Valerie has nearly 20 years of speaking/training and development experience working in both the public and private sectors. She has exceptional facilitation experience having delivered hundreds of presentations in areas including professional development, leadership development, performance management, management training programs, customer service, sexual harassment, and diversity & inclusion. Valerie’s work history includes managing the training functions for organizations in the consulting, transit and cruise industries. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Park University in Social Psychology and a Master of Human Resources Management from Keller Graduate School of Management. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

  • I rarely comment but this was inspiring and thought provoking. Every crime isn’t meant to be a lifelong downfall. There’s a quote that says sometimes God will take you to the ocean to rinse you, not drown you. You’re a tall glad of refreshing lemonade V. Lenore 🍋🍋🥰.

  • I think that's a beautiful program you have there and they need more like it and to be funded by the government so people can feel like they have a chance to become productive citizens I did 10 years first and last time it made me a believer if that time don't give you anything it give you a chance to reflect on your life was raised by my grandparents and I grew up in a house around a bunch of hard-working people so I had a lot of role models but when you get a certain age you choose to do what you want to do but I also knew that it was consequences behind the choices that I made and I took full responsibilities for my actions I told my aunt the world don't revolve around me because I'm locked up I made these choices after 10 years I came home I got involved with the organization called CEO center for employment opportunity 17 days later I was working and I've been on the job to this day and I am grateful I stay humble and I thank God.

  • AMAZING CONVERSATION. Fortunately I live in state that has many well paying Second Chance companies that hire felons. They become self sufficient, able to support themselves and the families.
