Why education, not punishment, is the solution to reducing crime | John Lonergan | TEDxDublin

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. John Lonergan argues that poverty and social deprivation are the main contributory factors to young people getting involved in crime and believes that education is the only pathway out of the poverty trap.
John Lonergan joined the Irish prison service in March 1968. He was appointed Governor of Mountjoy Prison in 1984 and served in that capacity for over 22 years. He retired from the prison service in June 2010 having served over 42 years.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  • The man shows vision and hope thinks outside the box quite literally, if only more of the people in power in Ireland held the same views as him the country would be the better for it

  • you are talking so fast sir. I needed to use the transcript in order to understand and follow what you are saying.. But other than that I consider it as one of my favorite topic since our country do not really care about the lives of those in the prison.

  • Slow down man...Slooooooooooooooooooooow it down! As far as I am concerned, EDUCATION has no direct co-relation to crime reduction. If that were the case, a lot of college educated people would be outstanding citizens around the globe. More than what's reported!

    @UrbanSipfly@UrbanSipfly8 жыл бұрын
    • You might be taking him too literally. I know the areas to which he is referring. Crime is more prevalent in socially deprived areas, and further or 3rd level education is hardly ever considered. He is not saying that the more socially advanced neighbourhoods are crime less. They are far less likely to be found breaking into the cars or the houses of their neighbours. EDUCATION is a key, that can open up many more doors for people. I have seen this here and in the USA. It is incorrect to believe that those with an EDUCATION, become saints. They can and have been responsible for crimes that have brought down companies, whole banking systems, and in some cases, whole economies.

    • You are wrong, education is strongly correlated to crime reduction. There are various academic papers that show this, and if you can understand it I recommend you to read the paper "The crime reducing effect of education" written by Machin, Marie and Vujic in the Economic Journal. It might change your view.
