This is a BRUTAL way to call out your team

A week after Mikko Rantanan called out Artturi Lehkonen's dad, we now have Devon Toews calling out his team in one of the most brutally honest ways I've seen. The Colorado Avalanche rolled into Chicago to play a Blackhawks last placed team on a 4 game losing streak, a club they should beat. Yet, it didn't exactly play out that way. Bedard had a great game, Mrazek played well and the Avalanche just couldn't stay out of the box in the 3rd period hurting themselves bad. Miles Wood got a game misconduct, Johansson got a late period penalty after MacKinnon was hit hard by Blackwell that caused a scrum and led to Johansson getting a misconduct as well. All of this led to a postgame interview unlike many. Devon Toews flat out called out his team mates saying only 14 of 20 guys are playing how they should adding "It’s frustrating to… play out there when you got guys that think they’re playing well and they’re doing things that, you know, you have no idea what play they’re gonna make”. I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

    • Came here to say exactly that. I’m an Avs fan too and good on Toews for saying this. They need someone to step up and ground them. I just feel there’s no leadership on the team at the moment. I love Mack and makar but I just don’t see them being the type of players to dish the tough love to their teammates (likes captain would do) to try and rally the troops. At least not yet for makar. Avs are a freakin powerhouse but they need a captain to really bring the team back to earth by saying the things they may not always wanna hear.

  • As an Avs fan, I don't think the situation between Ismo and Mikko is a particularly big issue. Rantanen made it clear in a following interview that he and Artturi are good friends, he just wasn't a fan of Ismo saying that he didn't train as much over the summer and would prefer Ismo stuck to analyzing his on-ice play rather than his personal life. In regards to Toews' comments, he's not wrong. There are a handful of guys that are guilty of either trying too hard and making dumb mistakes or not putting in enough effort and giving the opponent chances. I think it's especially noticeable in the D-core without Makar and Girard in the lineup since a lot of the depth is actually playing very well, however it feels like they might be a bit overconfident in trying to fill in for the big offensive shoes Makar and Girard have left leading to a lot more mistakes. The one exception to this is Bo Byram, who's just been having a bit of a rough patch lately and kinda seems to be gripping his stick a bit too hard and trying to hard, leading once again to more mistakes.

  • I’m amazed at the amount of people applauding this. I actually can’t think of many ways to cause more division in your own locker room if you tried. “Maybe he already said this in private” just makes it worse imo. If you’re one of the guys he’s not talking about, now you’re wondering how much you can really trust your own captain to have your back or take accountability himself. Will he air you out to the media one day? Will he decide you’re the problem next after one bad game? Will he hold himself to the same standard? If you’re one of the guys he IS talking about, you’re either already aware of how you’re struggling or you now feel like you’ve had a target out on your back with the fans and media while your captain escapes any criticism.

Telling the media that - precisely - 14 players are pulling their weight, but six are not…. that’s either brutally honest and accurate, or it’s evidence that the Colorado roster is a clusterfuck. • This tells me that there is a problem with the team and the coach. Appreciate his honesty but this kind of talk should be left in the locker room. It makes the coach look bad, especially if the coach is addressing the problem. If he voiced his frustration with the coaches and they haven't addressed the issue, it's another story. No matter what the situation is, the fact is that he's a player and not in charge. That makes him less desirable should he want a trade.

  • I'm all for ringing the alarm bell as an Avs fan, however, hockey players are the only type of athletes that can handle being called-out well. Bednar touched on this earlier today in an interview with a local radio station saying that he takes some of the blame, but they are running into a lot of these issues time and time again from players coming in and system players are getting frustrated by it. He sounded optimistic in thier abillity to iron these issues out. I think Wood is one of those players who Toews may have been referring to, as he kinda goes off and makes his own HEAVY METAL plays. 3rd and 4th lines are struggling to maintain possesion and I think it starts with some of out D-men geting cuaght out. Johnson is the oldest on our squad, however, he sticks to the system and has been shining as a result. All that being said, the Ranty situation is likely unrelated to Toews frustrations. Mikko's comments seemed personal while Toews realizes these newer guys need to stick to the plan before the post-season approaches. The talent is there, however, they are not opperating as a unit. It is very apparent with how many 2 on 1s and even 3 on 1s that the Avs have faced headed towards their own net. All that being said, they are still in a great position in their own division. I'm glad Toews stuck his neck out to air some of the frustrations. It shows they care when their recent performances havent indicated that they do.

  • Toews' comments are actually pretty spineless. If he was a good leader, you don't go whining to the media about issues with some players on your team, you save it and address it directly with your teammates. There are definitely some issues brewing in that locker room.
