  • Hey, Jomboy, I was late to this one, but fun breakdown - made me laugh. Hey, I was wondering - how is it that this tradition of throwing people out of the game got started in baseball? I can’t think of of any other sport where coaches or players routinely and arbitrarily get thrown out of games. In hockey, you can actually get in a fist fight with another player, and just get a penalty. In soccer, you have the yellow/red card thing, and basketball has the foul-out, but those are fairly objective rules. Baseball is kinda nuts that coaches can call time to argue with the ump, and then the ump just arbitrarily decides to toss you. Anyway, I was just thinking about it - might be a fun video to do a breakdown of the history of baseball ejections.

    @ChitFromChinola@ChitFromChinola2 жыл бұрын
    • There are ejections like this in the NFL as well, although they are very rare. Soccer red cards can also be fairly arbitrary, there are definitely players that have been thrown out for arguing with the ref. I do agree that baseball's ejections seem more arbitrary but it's because, in my opinion, baseball is more of a subjective game. The ump decides calls and strikes, but since those aren't a tangible thing (as in, there is no argument in basketball over whether or not the ball went through the hoop, everyone can see it, but it's much harder to visualize a strike zone in real time), so arguments start because players disagree with the ump's calls. I think that's what started the rules about ejecting players that annoyed the umps too much, because otherwise players would be able to yell at umps all day to get calls their way.

As Rule 8.02(a)'s Comment says, umpires are supposed to warn any player, manager, or coach who leaves his position to argue balls and strikes, which seems to have happened here with the home plate umpire. It isn't a matter of feelings, it's a matter of maintaining order in the game.
