TULUM: THE HIDDEN SIDE (Mexico)

Tulum is Mexico's most popular tourist destination, however in recent years there have been more and more videos made on how disappointing Tulum is. In this video I explore the hidden side of Tulum which a lot of visitors don't get to see, and show you that it is possible to find authentic hidden gems such as Sian Ka'an and Dos Palmas cenote. Below are the links to the experiences we did:

  • The production reminds me of older PBS travel shows like Globe Trekkers, mixed with various Anthony Bourdain series. There is something nostalgic and familiar that really hits home for me, great work, can't wait for more!

  • The goddess of that Mayan alter on the ceremony is not Maya! It’s name is Xochipilli (from aztec flower’s princess) and is from the Aztecs from the center of Mexico (Mexico city now), this show indeed a hidden side of the current ceremony sold to tourists, are not authentic mayan ceremonies, also the Temazcal or Temazcalli in Náhuatl (the language of the aztecs again) is a tradition from the cultures of the center of México, not Mayan at all, this was newly introduced in the region to sell it to tourists, specially the super commercial Dos Palmas, sad but truth, I’m a Náhuatl speaker and born from indigenous family.

  • My wife and I stayed in Tulum for 3 amazing weeks back in '96. We rented a palapa on the beach in Don Armando's and the Santa Fe campgrounds. We were back packing around Mexico but with a car, 11 weeks to circumnavigate the whole coast of the country. If I'd known then what I know now we would have spent the whole 11 weeks right there. We snorkeled all day, lazed on the beach, and drove into town at night to eat at the many roadside restaurants and eateries. It was one of the most relaxing times of my life.

    • @Pedro VIVAMXadventures That is so sad. We went back a few times over the years, tried once to show the area to some friends but the whole place, including Tulum town, had changed so much. It's the same problem everywhere around the world, your old neighborhood etc. You can never go back. It's just doubly sad when it's such a spectacular place as Tulum.

    @marcomendoza5160@marcomendoza5160 Жыл бұрын
    • Estoy de acuerdo, lo mismo pensé que trataría el video y bueno es un poco mas de lo mismo. La búsqueda de una experiencia "auténtica" en ojos de quien no padece esos problemas. No está mal la intención del video, de alguna forma intenta apoyar a la gente local consumiendo en ciertas zonas y promoviendo la cultura bajo sus vivencias pero la explotación comercial de la imagen cultural en los mercados internacionales hacen que poco a poco el problema de la gentrificacion en esa y muchas zonas de México sea más común y en realidad termine afectando a la gente local a la cual pretenden apoyar, es muy contrastante y evidente, pero hay que cuestionarse si de verdad vale la pena comercializar tanto nuestra cultura en pro de la hegemonía dominante.

Out of control development along the coast, making way for one new beach club after the other. The result is no more local feeling at the beaches, hard to find local food in these areas, and let along affordable food for local people. Social media really has destroyed these places.

    • WARNING!!!! Where will you go when you die? Heaven or Hell??? We can not hide our sins from GOD. Repent and accept Jesus as you Lord and Savior before it is too late. Jesus loves us and He can forgive us of any sins that we have committed. HELL IS REAL!!!! THE LAKE OF FIRE IS REAL!!!! MATTHEW 3:2 REPENT, FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS AT HAND.!!!!

  • I stayed in a bungalow on the beach for $5 per night in 1993. BTW.... Mayans are not going to sell their authentic ceremonies. That 'ceremony' was staged for tourists, using a mixture of symbols, songs, and traditions from North, Central, and South American traditions (and a bit of new age). Regardless, it's still good to support local people and I'm sure the temazcal felt lovely.
