Everyone knows Cancun as the ultimate paradise destination with its white beaches and
5-star hotels. However, there is a barrio (neighborhood) called Villas Otoch Paraiso that is literally the most violent and dangerous place in Cancun. They say there isn't a day that goes by when you don't hear gunshots or police and ambulance sirens.
It's not that I don't trust what the media says about this area of Cancun.
It's that I always feel like I want to see what such a place looks like during the day and what the locals have to say!!
So I decided to take the risk and go to Villas Otoch Paraiso!
Let's gooo!!

Although I used very little Spanish that I learned in grade school when I was in the Midwest, I picked back up after 2 yr back in Fl. But ur Spanish is still better than mine! Good job. I love the Greeks and Greek language! I spent a month in 1995 wandering all over Greece. I’d learned the alphabet and phonetics before I went so that I could catch buses and read signs/ etc. in 1995! Much less was in English then AND it was the best time, we could still walk in the acropolis! Delfi! All the places with ancient temples and ruins. Not the same today, I’m so glad I spent that time, years ago in your country! I might hop over to Greece for a few days in March when I go to travel with my 21 yr old. We are gonna “wander” in Italy! I’ll be traveling for a month and I love that u are out enjoying the world too Tim!

    • @@SoWellDunn just remember that 90% of the world is afraid of their own shadow. I grew up in a terrible neighborhood in Detroit where people are being shot and killed everyday and overdosing on the front lawn. And I will tell you that everybody would say not to go to that neighborhood, everybody would say that's a dangerous neighborhood. It's just like Chicago, everybody I talk to is afraid to go to the outskirts of Chicago especially at night, Tampa, Miami. But yet I've been to all those areas. All the areas that people say are dangerous, don't go there. I've been to all of them. Obviously most importantly you have to have wits about yourself. So just because somebody is afraid to go to a neighborhood doesn't mean it's a bad neighborhood. I mean I know so many people in the United States who are afraid to go to Cancun Mexico because they think they're going to get kidnapped and robbed. Come on. If you let people's fear dictate your life then you might as well not travel anywhere. You might as well stay in the house and not leave.

  • That's what Cancun looks like almost everywhere once you leave the touristy areas. My father lives in Cancun and all the houses look like that almost everywhere. I've always said Cancun looks ugly once you get to the real Cancun. It doesn't have the charm that other older cities of Mexico have. It doesn't have that nice layout. It's literally a city that was slapped together and grew so quickly due to the tourism that started developing. People from all over Mexico ended up in Cancun looking for work and they started to eventually just build all these little tiny homes and communities.

    • It's bad because people are in poor economic conditions, so there's a number of them who will resort to crime. It is not the police not doing their job, but that does worsen the issue. I grew up in a neighborhood where most people don't suffer economically, so I haven't seen a crime or anything crazy there for 11 years. It isn't safe because of the police, the police have easy jobs there because few residents feel the need to commit crimes out of necessity.

Walking in a hood like that alone, with no locals protecting or guiding you didnt feel like a good idea to me. When you were walking by those houses I was half expecting 5 guys to jump out of somewhere and start questioning you. I think it's a matter of luck that nothing like that happened, because if it did I dont think you could simply talk yourself out of it. Keep doing what you re doing, but please remember that tourists are one of the easiest targets when they visit a dangerous place and especially when they are alone.

I don’t care how tough you are … but when a bunch of masked up men hop off a pick up truck with automatic guns while you’re strolling, or driving in a foreign country (Their Back Yard) it will make anyone crumble. Stay in groups of 2 or more. Like I said I’ve seen way too much crime here. Keep in mind the average Mexican only earn on average of $10USD a day! That’s 140 pesos. It is still a very poor country.

When locals tell you to be careful and that it’s dangerous they don’t mean that the second you get there you’re gonna have 48 holes in your body. You are watched. Day and night by many. Especially when the local gang members that usually control those areas have people you don’t think otherwise to be informers. This looks more like paying the victim Card... because why would they charge you when you drive your daughter choking to the hospital to save her life ? that is such a weird story... absolutely 0 empathy from the judge or jury what so ever... just because your Mexican and that is the reason. everyone hates you because your not American after something like this horrible happens they will give you 15 years just like that. • I sure hope that the man from North Carolina has a better turn in life and reunites with his family. The main fact is that his little girl died. Kindness, regret and sorrow should have been the response of all involved. But the way bureaucracy can - at times - make us think narrowly had a sad result. As you know, your videos are a little different - Keep smiling. In fact, while you don't show yourself all the time, which is a good thing, I hope to see you smile more. If your mission - should you choose to accept it - is successful, you will! God bless you.

    • Spot on, our "justice" systems seem to get it so entirely wrong far far to often. There's little space for actually just outcomes. I suspect that's why so many rallied around the Johnny Depp trial, he represented a guy standing up to domestic violence, abuse and injustice and in a way many of us, for lack of resources, simply can't. I'd just about bet that if Johnny's lawyer was on this guy's case it would be found he was infact innocent and further there'd be a huge payout/rectification of the situation!
