His increased weight, combined with his injuries must have reduced his speed. Plus supposedly he wasn't the greatest worker and loved to party and eat, all this can't have helped stay quick.

The real Ronaldo as far as I am concerned. When he came to Europe he started out at PSV in our modest Dutch league, which was advised by that other Brazilian legend Romario, who also started out there. Ronaldo only briefly stayed here because it became clear almost immediately that he was way too good for our national level, so a move to Barca made a lot of sense. Not only his skill was highly appreciated over here, but his likable character as well. He even tried to learn our language, which I suppose is incredibly difficult for someone from Latin America. In the Netherlands we still have a place in our collective football heart for the greatest Brazilian striker that ever stood on a pitch.
