    • You do know that large primates are heavily poached right? Being in a zoo is saving their lives Edit: to all the people saying I'd rather die than be in prison etc... umm the big difference is WE ARE 8 BILLION STRONG and they are down to what? A thousand? Also they aren't in cages but nice habitats. Yeah humans die, but we aren't being hunted to extinction. These are straw man arguments.

      @colleens1107@colleens110711 ай бұрын
    • I don't think so. Gorillas are one of the world's most endangered animals, and in the wild their numberes continue to decline due to deforestation and human competition (including being hunted for bushmeat of all things). At least in a zoo enclosure, a gorilla faces zero threat of being poached, and their dietary intake and health are carefully monitored. Gorillas in captivity live far longer on average than those in the wild (50 years compared to 40 years). Sure, a zoo enclosure isn't the ideal environment, but again, far, far better than the alternative since allowing them to exist in the wild these days is a risky proposition.

I rescued 2 parrots a couple of years ago, I've had ample pets during my life, including very smart German Shepards, but they are nothing compared to parrots, with parrots being in there along with great apes & the dolphin family in intelligence levels. Parrots are viewed as having the general intelligence of a 5 year old & mental intelligence of a 2-3 year old, very different experience to a dog or cat. But please people, only consider experiencing this yourself if you really would be willing to take on the responsibility of a monkey species or similar & a pet lifespan of many, many decades (with a plan for where it goes when you die if you buy a large parrot as a baby, cause they live 100 years)

I cook for him & he's getting quality food. No more having to sneak food that was left on a plate, just because the guy spent all his money on alcohol instead of a sack of dog food. 😪 I felt so sorry for the dog because he's a very smart, well behaved, sweet little Jack Russell Terrier with a funny sense of humor. ❤❤❤ I love him so much! • you say this like the jungle isn't full of threats of its own. I'm not saying captivity is the best thing in the world, but not all gorillas have the chance to live a full life and or raise their young. Captivity is a blessing in comparison to being poached and dismembered with parts sold in underground markets. Captive wild animals are typically rescues of situations like deforestation or poaching with lengthy backgrounds you can hear from their owner/trainers, and read about through third party outlets like the web or foundation pamphlets. Captivity has aided in extinction prevention of countless species since the beginning of time.@@slothy6096

    • @@fractalehuit9112 I think it bothers most people but the fact is that this seems to be a zoo or sanctuary in the U.S. judging by the language and the accents of the visitors, most likely but of course I can’t be sure. At least in the U.S. the law doesn’t allow any longer for primates to be removed from their natural habitat and kept in confinement. These Gorillas are unfortunately the descendants of gorillas who were most likely poached from the wild so that is of course sad. The thing about it though is that these western lowland gorillas are an extremely endangered species so they couldn’t just allow all of those gorillas that were originally taken from the wild back during the 20th century to simply die off without allowing them to pursue their natural drive to reproduce. Giving birth, as well as raising their own infants, even in captivity is a critical component to giving these animals a fulfilling life, at least as best as it can be while in captivity. The issue at the heart of the discussion is that primates are not born with the skills to survive life in the wild. Like human beings they have to spend their first 4-8 years clinging to and nearby their mothers in order to watch and learn all the necessary skills needed for surviving a life in their natural habitat. Everything from what fruits, vegetables, insects, plants and other wild edibles are safe to eat, which plants, insects and other poisonous or dangerous objects they should avoid. How to build sleeping nests in the trees so they can avoid the larger ground based predators that typically hunt during the night. Although building sleeping nests high in the tree tops is more commonly seen with Chimpanzees and Orangutans rather than gorillas. Unfortunately, the last generation of gorillas in zoos and sanctuaries that would have learned those skills from their mothers would have been the first generation of primates taken from the wild back during the 20th century, before anti-poaching laws had been passed in the U.S. When that generation reproduced, some of those skills may have been taught to their offspring in captivity, but unfortunately necessity dictates how much of those skills the young are exposed to, which would diminish with each new generation. It’s a difficult situation, I’m not sure what the answer is honestly, letting these animals go free in the wild has been tried and shown by Primatologists to end with disastrous results, unless the primates can be trained with the skills they need to survive in the wild over the course of many years by well trained human caregivers. This is something that the conservation organizations in Borneo and Sumatra have been doing with orphaned and captive Orangutans for the past 25 years with quite a bit of success. The animals need to be extremely young when training for survival in the wild begins, but they have seen a lot of success. Hopefully more organizations like that will come into being and will be able to help return many of these animals to a life in the wild as nature intended.
