In today's video, Jeff is talking about how to rock a minimalist beard. What exactly is a minimalist beard, you ask? It's a stripped down beard that is all about essentials, and not much more.
It's typically shorter, not very extravagant or in-your-face. Rather it's supportive and complimentary to the wearer. Jeff says his style is normally clean and organized, and his beard is grown to match. The key here is less effort and less work - you're able to cut out flare-outs and flyaways.
How do you go about maintaining a minimalist beard? Less is more, and we're talking length here. Keeping it shorter-cropped eliminates the need to constantly be tinkering with and grooming your beard. That doesn't mean you've cut down to no grooming - Jeff says his grooming routine has changed a bit but he still uses beard products like beard wash/softener and beard oil.
There are plenty of benefits of rocking a minimalist beard too - with less time dedicated to your beard, you have more time for the things you enjoy. This style of beard is all about keeping the parts you love, and trimming off the parts that you don't.

  • Listening to this vid, it struck me that growing a beard isn't a thing you do. It's a discipline. It's like zen for your face. It teaches you to have patience. It teaches you to not expect immediate gratification. It teaches you how to nurture. It reminds you that you deserve to be good to yourself.

  • You just keep making videos that reassure what I'm thinking is common. I like the idea of keeping what makes you happy. I kept the mustache after getting a big chunk of length taken off but am thinking about taking it shorter and almost "retraining" it. I'd like for it to be more minimalist. There's a lot of tough choices but it all grows back if you make the wrong one.

I'm growing my hair long again, which there is a lot of, ...a lot!, so keeping my beard to a minimum keeps my head from appearing to over whelmed and heavy.

  • Great video Jeff, I always look forward to seeing a video from you. It was a very well informational video and i am like you as well. I have been thinking more and more about taking the beard down to a more manageable length like yourself, Eric and Carlos's length. I have been maintaining my current length for almost a year now. I took a good amount off after my first year of growth to my current length and it took me a while to get adjusted to it but in the end i was very happy with the amount of time i was saving with the care of it. It's just taking me more time to pull the trigger this go around. Thats the beauty of a beard though, it will always grow back.

  • i agree with you 100% percent i grew mine in 2014 and 15 grew it for 14 months and i had the same issues, it took a lot of work to make it look how i wanted it to look, with the blow drying straightening softening and so forth. it got to the point where i had to buy a beard straightener and use every day just to make it look the way i wanted it where it wasnt all waving the wrong way and yea was too much work. dont get me wrong it looked awesome once i did all this and used to get nothing but compliments but i just got over it. once i realized i was having to do my beard for longer than my gf did her hair i was out. so i shaved it off completely for a year and just recently decided to grow it back and its good to hear your thoughts on a minimal beard cuz thats what im going for this time. you are a huge inspiration to me because we have the type of beard hair it looks like and also we do our hair somewhat similar, i have a receding hairline like you as well so it would be cool to see some more vids on how you do your hair with that issue. i know its kind of a shitty thing as we get older to deal with but like i said your vids make me feel better cuz you rock it with confidence and thats awesome. anyway make more vids man i love this channel your my favorite on here love your vids and tips for this lifestyle. hope all is well and stay up and beard on

I'm about a month away from accomplishing my first yeard and I've been thinking a lot about what I am going to do. I have no intention of going clean, but just how short to go. After watching your video I want to just knock down the "rough" areas that make my beard look unruly. I still want a full beard just not a scraggly one.

  • I love the minimalist beard, I'm about 3 or so months in right now, i didnt really keep track of how long because i never thought of growing a beard when I started, i just get lazy at shaving and just shave when it gets long but now i stopped completely, I always hated using a razor because of the razor burns, and always used hair trimmers without the guard, and then i never really thought about how long i wanted it, until this video! i never thought or knew the term Minimalist beard, and when I saw this video, I knew thats exactly what I wanted, so thank you! but what i really hate is that its not completely full around in front of my lower lip area, I really want that sharp full hair line under my lower lip line all the way across like Jeff does! but and the middle area of my upper lip. I just want to say, Jeff, you Look like "Franks" Character from How To Get Away with Murder, but with a much fuller and better beard! of course : )

  • Hi Jeff..., I totally agree with you. I am growing back a beard now (I used to live in North Africa so a beard was just normal there, although I did wear it very short and trimmed). I decided now to go longer than a very short trimmed beard but actually just natural (and not very long though) I guess it would be a medium beard. A bit shorter than what you have in this video. The principles you explain in this video are exactly how I feel about having a beard. Jus the myself with my own natural look.

  • Having had different styles of facial hair I am on the minimalist beard look now. It doesn't mean unkept, but I've found that length that is long and full enough to satisfy me with the minimal amount of hassle. I kept finding myself in the mirror too much trying to comb out waves and getting my beard 'just right', because some small part would annoy me. Now I can wash it, give it a towel dry and be good to go for the day. In between washes I use beard oil to keep it soft and moisturized. I do some trims when I think I need them and decide if I want to go a little longer or a little shorter. Having a minimal beard doesn't mean you can't update it. For me I tend to have a longer beard in the Fall and Winter, then go shorter in the Spring and Summer. If you're chasing after a style just because and it's frustrating, the enjoyment won't be there. Take a step back to something manageable. At the end of the day it's all about doing what makes yourself happy and many times less really is more.

  • Very much agree. This video and your athletic beard style video have inspired me to go shorter with my beard. I have slowly been trimming more and more, but will pay a visit to the barber soon to get an inch or two taken off. I want to take a minimalist approach to products as well and only use beard oil. I am tired off using oil, then balm or butter, then mustache wax. Ready to simplify it! Thanks.

    • +Beardbrand - Jeff, I think you nailed it and I love the concept of the minimalist beard. I'm about 10 months into my Yeard, and I gotta say, it really feels part of me now, but as you mentioned there's a lot that goes into maintaining a lengthy beard. I'm enjoying the routine of fixing up my beard in the morning, but I definitely foresee the novelty wearing off, and I'll probably transition to minimalist after I hit my goals. Keep up the awesome videos, Jeff. Well done.

  • Well, I'm now on my 9th month growth. But during in my 4th or 5th month growth. I actually struggle with the same problems with the hair that is sticking out and curls. I did tried to maintain it by using a blow dryer to keep it straight. However until the 6th or 7th month that curl or fly away is gone. So, I don't have to worry about that anymore and no longer a time consuming issue. But I respect your desire to keep it minimal. I might do the same after I arrive my yeard beard (or not :) Also, yes it does squished my beard by wearing a scarf or a thick jacket. But I manage to change all that as I tried to find different ways to over come that. Other than that, sure enjoy your videos Jeff. Keep it up.

I also trim my tache' regularly keeping the hair from coming over my top lip. I've decluttered my beard products. I ditched a number of combs, brushes, oils, waxes and balms. I now only use the essential few. Maintenance, grooming and eating are just now so much easier. It saves time and effort, but my beard is still healthy and looking great!

  • You had an epic long beard and I can honestly say you were one of those people that just looked really good with it! When you shaved it off completely to start over it just didn't look the same. I was in the same boat where I completely shaved off my 6 month growth beard all the way but I just didn't like that look on me as much so I immediately grew my beard back. I agree with you however, that having a longer or bigger beard just takes a lot of work and effort and it's just easier to maintain a normal beard. I'd never go completely minimalist where my skin is still visible, but having a normal length beard is just easier to maintain and less hassle.

  • Awesome.. I'm actually struggling with right now myself I like the big long beard but you're right it's a pain to fix all the time.. I don't normally fix it during the week, I work construction so not really a big deal but I don't feel as happy with it when it's not. Keeping it shorter would help with that a lot but I'm not 100% I'm ready yet..

    @jamesdormady1877@jamesdormady18778 жыл бұрын
    • +James Dormady Like i was saying, It's not about going short, it's about embracing what you love the most. If the big beard is your thing, then you're willing to sacrifice some annoyances in care for it.

      @BareBuon@BareBuon8 жыл бұрын
    • +Jeffrey Buoncristiano I get that and I think I'm trying to say the same thing just wording it differently. I like having the big beard the pains of grooming doesn't bother me. what bothers me is not always being able to or the fact that even if I do it'll be all crazy about an hour or so into my workday. For me I think going with a shorter beard and making it easier to maintain on a daily base is better in the long run. Rather than feeling down about my appearance because I wasn't able to maintain the big beard through out the day will at work.. I believe our end result is the same but the reasoning for wanting/going for the minimalist beard is different..

  • Your beard looks awesome. Ive been growing mine since September. I deal with flare outs and what I now refer to as bed beard. When its all over the place in the morning, I feel it has a mind of its own. I only comb it through the week as I've not got the time(or can't be bothered). Some days it gets on my nerves and I feel like shaving it off, but I resist the urge and think Im not having to look at it. Eating is now a game of chance on whether i try to consume my hair and top lip. I wouldn't say mine was that long either. All my family tells me to trim it but that makes me more determined to keep it as is. My wife doesn't like it too much but admits i would look strange without a beard now. Rant over Beard on

  • Hi Jeff, great videos - I'm 2 weeks in and wonder when is the right time to start to use the beard products such as: oils, wash and softeners?

    @PMcCrudden1@PMcCrudden17 жыл бұрын
    • Hey Patrick - I'm sure Jeff will weigh in as well, but I figured I'd jump in to help out. Beard oil will go a long way in the alleviating the itchy/prickly phase of early growing, so you can use that as early as right now. Wash and softeners I would give another 2-3 weeks of growth. Around the one month mark your beard will start growing away from your face and you'll really need a good product to lather it up and keep it clean and soft. Hope that helps, and beard on! -Zach

  • I love your videos, just discovered the channel last night and it's everything I need to know! But can you please help me with my beard? I've been growing it for around a month, it's slightly patchy on the cheeks but getting pretty thick on the jawline and neck. I am using beard oils, shampooing it every few days and generally keeping it well maintained. But I'm looking to grow a specific type of beard; I'm 19 and my hair was thinning so I've been keeping it shaved to about a grade 1. I figured a beard like yours where it's thick but not too long and still shows off the jawline will look best on me. My question is, how do you maintain this beard? when it starts getting really long, how do you shave certain areas (or do you not shave anything?) and like once you reach your current beard look, do you just trim using scissors? You have an amazing beard and I really hope I can this now that my hair gave out on me so young!!

    @yuseiilyas701@yuseiilyas7017 жыл бұрын
    • The best approach is to put down all the grooming tools and let your beard grow. Especially at your age it will take some time to fill out. Keep using the oils and washes to keep it healthy. Once you get the fullness, then you can slowly start trimming off and shaping your beard to your liking. Stay patient, you'll get there!

Solid looking neat beard, if I knew HOW I'd try it.. as it stands I use my home made beard balm to keep my beard all together. When I wake up in the mornings it's pretty scary looking lol. Thumbs up video!~~John

  • I myself just do a brush, oil and fine comb once in the morning, and I let the flare and waves do their thing. It looks fine on my face, and adds a bit of character to my beard. It's a bit on the long side, at about 7 months in with minimal trimming.

  • You also mentioned trimming your mustache if you got tired of it getting in your mouth. I really like the looks of your mustache but when I tried to grow mine out it really aggravated me when eating and just getting in my mouth in general. Does it ever get to a point where it is not aggravating? Could you do a video on pros and cons of a long mustache?

    @bobbydavis57@bobbydavis577 жыл бұрын
    • I've had my mustache at varying lengths, and when it's longer, it never stops being a bit aggravating when eating! You don't notice it as much or get as actively irritated, but it's always going to be an issue you have to deal with - always keep an extra napkin handy and wipe your mouth and stache after every bite. -Zach

  • I keep mine more minimal. being in the medical field I have to wear mask's in certain situations and a long beard wouldn't work for me. I also don't like when it starts getting scraggly when too long. When hairs start twinging out and looking to wild I clip them off.

    @pitbullpappa@pitbullpappa8 жыл бұрын
  • I think it really depends on what style you relate to. Like if you see a guys beard and you're like dang, I wish I could sport that..then do it! It should be the truest reflection of yourself. Just like when you first start growing a beard and you look in the mirror, and you say "hey, that's me. That's my face". You take it a step further when you refine that image into the shape and length you want. It takes time and experimentation, but like you eventually you find what you like and rock it. It also depends on what genetics have granted you to grow. If your beard is really thin, having a long beard probably isn't ever going to look good. Grow what ya got, love what ya got, have fun and beard on!

  • I'm on board, I'm at about 8-9 months 95% untrimmed at about 5 inches of growth. I have my specific things that I do, but there are some things that I just can't change. My hair is pretty coarse, kind of like Carlos Costa's. 2 things I have been thinking about doing.... 1. trim the tips of my mustache to be similar length as the rest. 2. over all trim down the sides for more of a professional look. Still deciding... maybe I'll make a video. Would you guys be interested in giving an opinion if I showed you a picture? Love the videos! keep it up Jeff & everybody.

  • does shaving the beard speed up the growth process i know that the final shape of a beard depends on genatics . my father and my uncles have a thick full beard im 20 y . now my beard start to fill in betwin the sides and and the chin wich are already thick . i think the sides and the chin are the first areas where the hair start to grow . so can the beard reach the full potential without shaving at all . because i think the light hair that start to grow when we cut it off more hair show up . !!!

    @mohamedamine7888@mohamedamine78888 жыл бұрын
    • The idea that shaving makes your beard thicker is actually a myth - your beard density and look is determined by your genetics. Give your beard some more time and I'm sure you'll see it start to fill in as you get older! -Zach

  • I’m with you Jeff. I prefer the minimalist beard. I think a beard can really accentuate a strong jaw line but there is a point in your beard growth where your jaw line is lost and I find less attractive.
