I don't understand the constant use of the word betrayal in this. What had the animals benefiting from the baboon alarm system, been doing symbiotically to help the baboons? I honestly dont know, so this is not a rhetorical question just an honest one to gain knowledge. To me this is evolution at its finest, and a prime example of mother nature's majesty and beauty. Betrayal just seems like a ugly representation of just how amazing an adaptation this is in my humble opinion. Thanks for the video either way it was fascinating!

But that's just a theory, an animal theory, thanks for watching.
@@ripzaurus good point! It might be that animals who have had bad experiences at this particular water hole might just stop going there
It's probably something that is hard to remove from your habits. Those grazing animals probably have relied on that alarm for so long it's instinctual. Without the baboons they go back to square one and lose an advantage rather than being able to adapt to the baboon factor.
The ones who had bad experiences from baboons are now dead! Haha but on a serious note, I have evolved to not trust baboons anymore
@@TarekMidani Baboons are wily but not that much of a threat. It's their close relative, the hominids, that you have to look out for.
My head hurts on wondering how "the first deception" might've occured. Coz that looks super tough.
The brain is always trying to solve problems, so maybe one day, deception came up as a solution to an issue. I'm sure it was also built up to somehow subtly. But this is just guessing.
Baboons can gang up on lions and do them serious injury. I wonder if this happened and the lions learned not mess with the baboons....or the tribe of lions used to be smaller. I could see how it would be easy enough for the lions to learn not to mess with baboons when they have other food sources. I bet they aren't quite as friendly with eachother as this video makes it seem like.
someone mentioned in another thread: most herbivores go back to drinking once the lioness has caught any sizeable prey anyway. baboons probably just took it a step further and helped repeat the pattern. also, it's not like we actually know what the baboons or lions are thinking... baboons aren't getting paid to be an early warning system for these other drinkers, so they must've figured out they could alert their troop without alerting everyone else.
@Alnashief Mohammad *inserts lion king music*
It would of been gradual both animals are very smart I’d say baboons thought of it. If we feed her she won’t eat us . And the lioness would of slowly realised that the baboons are an advantage. Only the baboons are smart enough to set it up but the lioness is smart enough to know she’s on a good thing ..!
Africa nature is like a paradise, so fantastic to see. The lions are the best betrayal by deciding not to attack the baboons, and the no scream to advice other animals about the danger.
It's very fascinating to see it!
I recall a lecturer in college who specialised in animal psychology warning about being too anthropomorphic when explaining animal behaviour, i.e. ascribing human-like intentions and intelligence, in this case not only to the baboons but the lions too. This could just be a case where two populations, normally predator and prey, have evolved to live peacefully alongside one another because the predator favours another prey and has little interest in the baboons. I'm not saying there couldn't be some kind of pact of machiavellian intelligence but it's going a long way beyond the evidence!
That's very interesting!
I think the baboons might really have crafted a tactic here, as it is not their natural behavior to not hide from the Lion. The lion however has a very natural motivation: baboon is simply not as good as a prey as the antilope is. I do think they're anthropomorphising the lions behavior in this case.
Very true to keep things like that in mind. That lacturer seems like a smart man.

Yeah its like an alliance between horse and grass.
It's better defined as a "mutualistic relationship", aka both parties benefit. The fact is, a whole lot of savannah animals have a commensal relationship with baboons, meaning that the other parties benefit but the baboon sees little to no benefit with their alerting of predators. For unknown reasons, the baboons of this group decided that traditional commensal relationship wasn't benefitting them like this one does. But also: "Self-preservation is also thought by some to be the basis of rational and logical thought and behavior." Basic instincts do not exist in a vacuum. In a complex, intelligent animal, instincts are wired into a brain that also contains a frontal cortex and rational thought. So there's definitely interplay between the two. Also from the wiki article: "However, when introduced to a novel threat, many species will have a self-preservation response either too specialised, or not specialised enough, to cope with that particular threat." This is why enhanced intelligence makes the survival instinct more effective. Because it's an adaptation to increase the complexity and flexibility of your response to threats.

And that's all, the baboons just start seeing that the lions don't attack them so they are calm when lions are around. It's not that the baboons made a plan or something, it's just nature
@@bigevil1001 No dude, it's not a trap set up by the baboons. The baboons would be pretty stupid if they still flee from the lions when they don't attack them. Even a fish is smart enough for that. The process was like this: 1) The Lions slowly realize that when they attack the baboons, the other animals escape, and they end up with nothing 2) The Lions stop attacking the baboons and chasing other prays *1 or 2 generations of baboons pass.* 3) The baboons no longer see the lions as a threat, for they have never experienced issues with them 4) Since the baboons aren't afraid of the lions, they don't flee, making the other animals feel secure and falling for the lions
@@generator3013 So what you're trying to say is they formed an alliance.
Now understand what my mama meant when she said, "Sometimes you got to feed your enemy what they want."
That is probably what the baboon mums are telling their offspring 🐒🦁
A wise policy. Nobody is more dangerous then the desperate.
Hope this isn’t about rape
Stupid mindset
Kinda like purposely choosing the lesser evil
Baboons are like used car salesmen to the Lions "Have I got a gem of a Chevy Impala to show you, step right here"
The brilliance behind this is astounding
3:56 Antelope looking like "Yall know that's f*cked up right?!"
I think it looks more like "Fuck, I'm next"
@@michelcharbonnier7603 "the system is rigged".
Antelope was saying , " this MFer right here set up my family!"
Antelope: "Is it safe to drink here baboon" Baboon: "yes it is safe....." *Lions pounce on antelope* 🦁🍖 🦁 Baboon: "safe for me not for you"
😂😂🤣
"safe for me not you" is one of the best punchlines of this comment archetype. 😂
😂😂
Lmao
"Call an ambulance but not for me"
Damn this bond goes real deep.
Babboon: silence ensures my protein intake. Lion: If I miss the Kudoo, Babboon is still on the menu. Kudoo: we aren’t stopping at any Babboon water holes again.
You can't betray someone you were never friend or ally with, this more like using one competitor to get rid of another.
True the antelopes benefit from the baboons making sound when they escape but the antelopes don’t do anything for the baboons so why should they care.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
@@okayyeah1387 Exactly.
@@ka-boom2083 Not necessarily because they might in competition for something like how the baboons maybe don’t want the antelopes around because they are both taking from the same watering hole
@@okayyeah1387 that's not how water works. You cant drink a hole dry.
Are you telling me that Rafiki was so close with Mufasa bc he lured the other animals in so they become a MEAL?? O-O
_NNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA_
Lmao
Hm
Rafiki is a mandrill but ok
If baboons had any sense of shame, they'd wear shorts.
😂 3:56 That antelope watching the baboon stroll past is like, "Hey man, why didn't you say somethin'?!"
Exactly! 😅
Imagine a few years later you can see baboon and lion using a hand signs to Hunter together
few million* years
Planet of the Apes: Africa Addition
Who is Hunter?
@Busy Bodies! maybe these lions are actually baboon pets hand raised.
Baboon riding on lion
I think the lions deserve the credit here.
Baboons at the Hunt Crimes Tribunal: “We were just following orders.”
