The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) starts going out around 40k miles to 140k miles. The most common issues directly related to the transmission going bad is: Loss of power, transmission Jerking, transmission slipping, coolant hose leak, CVT failure, and CVT error message on the cluster or on the navigation screen.
The warranty has been extended on some of these models from 5 years or 60k miles to 10 years or 120k miles.

  • 3 things to keep in mind, 1. Do not try to accelerate hard, be very easy on the gas, especially when taking off from a complete stop. 2. When you park, keep your foot on the brake pedal and use the parking brake before turning the engine off, this will hold the car with the brake and not the CVT belt. 3. Change the fluid every 30,000 miles.

  • I love the Nissan CVT information videos. I have a 2012 Rogue S with a CVT. at 128,000 miles(just beyond the 120,000 warranty). I started experiencing major issues that you have discussed (whining, limp mode, etc.) I had followed Nissan service recommendations of fluid replacement at every 60K miles. However, when it was deemed that I was S.O.L., I did some research. And I installed an aftermarket oil cooler and replaced the original Transmission preheater with one from an SL Model. I came to find that the SL Models equipped with a tow package have the same transmission except for the pre-heater. The SL pre-heater has 2 extra ports for the installation of an auxiliary transmission cooler. I was able to prolong my transmissions life to 180,000 miles. I then replaced the trans with a low mileage unit. and I applied the SL pre-heater and a new cooler, as well as now change fluid at every 40,000 miles (the fluid is disgusting at 40K). And so now I have almost 300,000 miles on my Rogue. I purchased the pre-heater and cooler for around $150.00 and they are an easy DIY project. (although I'm fairly mechanically inclined, since I did replace my trans myself). BTW.....my Nissan Dealer hates Me, because they can't sell me a new Nissan and I try to share my new found knowledge with everyone. And I have found that when doing a fluid replacement with Genuine Nissan NS2 CVT fluid, the capacity with the cooler installed and operating correctly is 8.25 quarts.

    • Good for you Shawn! Great post for changing fluid intervals. What was the brand and model of transmission cooler you installed? When you installed the CVT did you have to do a software procedure to update the computer? Ivan at Pine Hollow had to do a simple procedure to connect the transmission to the computer. He bought a brand new one. He wasn't as lucky as you to find a low mileage used model. As an aside his Rogue transmission died at 180K miles and the trans fluid indicator in the car computer still did not indicate time for a fluid change.

  • It makes a big difference…driving in 112+ temperatures vs…say 90 degrees. The fluid will boil and become foamy because the transmission housing is so HOT. When cycled like that many times, it degrades the fluid. So, if you drive summers in Phoenix or Las Vegas or similar areas, you should change CVT fluid more frequently. My Altima 2012 2.5 S is at 200,000 miles now…still going…but, I drive it quite delicately…I’m hoping for another 50,000 miles…

    • @@byloecelhigh8467 here’s the thing, every car has their flaws. Not every manufacturer is perfect, everyone has their preferences. He basically stated basic mechanical maintenance, changing the cvt fluid every 20k miles, so guess what keep track of it or keep going to the Nissan dealer. I got the warranty. I just got my rogue and love it, just drive it like any other car, keep it a few years or even more. Cars aren’t meant to last forever but if you have things like gap and the car gets totaled you are covered. Do I recommend gap no but it’s a god forbid thing. I fix cars and Nissan makes a reliable car that you can take too and from work, that you can drive locally. Would I say road trip worthy maybe not but if you have to move to another town I’m sure you would be fine. Just don’t floor it all the time, use the accelerator hard for emergency situations only or if there’s an asshole driving next to you. Keep the brakes maintained, and oil changed, and tires in good shape. This will all affect the life of the car. My Mazda CX-7 2007 had major engine problems noted online but I didn’t know till after but it lasted 3 years and it got me to and from work, guess what I kept it maintained, if you get the warranty, cpo, got it locally or live near the dealership like I do it’s nothing to be afraid of.

The rogue is already starting to make the winding sound going down the highway between 60 and 75 mph. Typical greedy company knowing they have these problems they charge $20 per quart of transmission fluid. After purchasing the fluid I stopped to talk to the the service tech and he try to tell me there was a special key in order to drain the transmission fluid. You can tell they're just trying to bullshit you to try to get you to bring the car in . I guess since they figured they already screwed you by building a piece of crap transmission in might as well finish it by charging it out the ass for the transmission fluid.

I changed the fluid around 90-100K, then again at 150K along with the filter, but all of these failures that I have heard about around 30-60K miles is sad. I mean to replace the transmission is probably $5,000. That is a stupid expense. Let alone Nissan raised the warranty period to 120,000 miles. So they obviously also agree that they had a problem. I am just saying, after this car dies, we are likely not buying another Nissan. I see it as we got lucky rather than my periodic maintenance kept the car in good condition. Who knows maybe it is the way people drive too. Maybe they manually shift, but it just seems like too many failures at too low of a mileage for it to be the average user's fault.

No whines and no bad transmission characteristics. I use a fluid extractor to remove the fluid so I don't have to get underneath and remove the oil Drain plug. Not saying that everyone will get that kind of mileage on their transmission, but I think that if you try and keep the fluid changed in these transmissions to keep the belt from wearing out you will get a lot more mileage out if it! • Just want to chime in on the cvt. I have a awd 2019 altima sl. I've been working at home quite a bit now so only have 13.5k miles so far. The car gets amazing mileage. Overall the cvt is ultra smooth. The power transfers extremely well from the engine to the wheels. There is some rubber bandy feel that I don't super like in around 10mph-30mph. But in the other speeds it is smooth as silk and I really like it. I don't have that many miles but I haven't have a single repair in 2.5 years. Now that there are other awd sedan options I'm thinking about trading it in before I have problems. But in my opinion I think it would go another 20 years because I'm not too hard on the car. Just once in awhile when I need to get ahead of someone.

I contacted Nissan and the said they are very sorry but could not help me because it was past warranty. I told the dealer to change the transmission fluid and flush the coolant fluid. They did but noted it would not help because the problem was more electrical and not mechanical. So far I've put over 300 miles on it with no issues. My advice would be to avoid Nissans equipped with the CVT. Hopefully the fluid changed has fixed the problem. I'll keep you posted.

    • Of course that's has good CVT is Toyota bcuz they put a gear in to prevent from sleeping the belt but Nissan is Reno Alliances so not reliable and jetco CVT is no good why they can't add a gear in like Toyota to there CVT and Toyota makes they own CVT like Nissan buing crappy CVT from jetco if they make they own CVT be much better

  • I was aware that some Nissan models were having CVT transmission reliability issues, but did not realize how bad it was until I saw this excellent video. My brother recently purchased a Nissan Rogue Sport. I am forwarding him the link to your video to help save him the potential CVT failure.

  • In your list of Maxima models to avoid you listed the years 2004-2016. I recently purchased a 2018 SV model with the CVT transmission, is this model a bad model as well for CVT transmissions?

  • Just curious as to why you didnt add in the newer Nissan models with CVTs?? I just bought an uber clean 2019 AWD CRV with 69k with a CVT. Are you saying the newer Nissan CVTs are more reliable?? Or perhaps they are just new enough that they havent started having problems yet??
